We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun. All that sunlight was fantastic for Mom’s vegetable garden. Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didn’t care much about my bedtime. Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mom was his clerk. That left me in a mess. I usually managed to find some trouble to get into. Once I had a little fire going in the dirt basement of a hotel. I had tried to light a barrel(桶)of paint but couldn’t really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me. The policemen took my matches and drove me home. Mom and Dad were occupied in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me, and they did! I had a tour of the prison before Mom rescued me. I hadn’t turned 5 yet. As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in. Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal handrail at school? As for Leonhard Seppala, famous as a dog sledder(驾雪橇者), I think I knew him well because I was taken for a ride with his white dog team one Sunday. At the time I didn’t realize what a superstar he was, but I do remember the ride well. I was wrapped(包裹)heavily and well sheltered from the freezing and blowing weather. In 1950, we moved back to Coeur d’Alene, but we got one more Alaskan adventure when Leonhard invited us eight years later by paying a visit to Idaho to attend a gathering of former neighbors of Alaska. 35. What can be inferred about the author’s family? A. His father was a cruel man. B. His parents didn’t love him. C. His parents used to be very busy. D. His mother didn’t have any jobs. 36. What happened when the author was 4? A. He learned to smoke. B. He was locked in a basement. C. He was arrested by the police. D. He nearly caused a fire accident. 37. Which of the following is true? A. Leonhard was good at driving dog sleds. B. The author spent his whole childhood in Alaska. C. Leonhard often visited the author’s family after 1950. D. The author suffered a lot while taking the dog sled in Alaska. 38. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text? A. To look back on his childhood with adventures. B. To describe the extreme weather of Alaska. C. To express how much he misses Leonhard. D. To show off his pride in making trouble. Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didn’t care much about my bedtime及Mom and Dad were occupied in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me等话语可以推断出,作者的父母当时忙于他们自己的事情,无暇照顾我。 36. I had tried to light a barrel(桶)of paint but couldn’t really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me,可知,我点燃了一桶油漆,但火并没燃得很大烟却很浓,警察来把我带走。 At the time I didn’t realize what a superstar he was, but I do remember the ride well可以推断Leonhard很擅长驾雪橇。 38. A。 C A schoolgirl saved her father’s life by kicking him in the chest after he suffered a serious allergic(过敏的) reaction which stopped his heart . Izzy, nine, restarted father Colm’s heart by stamping(踩)on his chest after he fell down at home and stopped breathing. Izzy’s mother, Debbie, immediately called 999 but Izzy knew doctors would never arrive in time to save her father, so decided to use CPR. However, she quickly discovered her arms weren’t strong enough, so she stamped on her father’s chest instead. Debbie them took over with some more conventional chest compressions(按压) until the ambulance arrived . Izzy, who has been given a bravery award by her school, said:“I just kicked him really hard. My mum taught me CPR but I knew I wasn’t strong enough to use hands .I was quite scared .The doctor said I might as well be a doctor or a nurse, My mum said that Dad was going to hospital with a big footprint on his chest.” “She’s a little star,” said Debbie, “I was really upset but Izzy just took over . I just can’t believe what she did. I really think all children should be taught first aid. Izzy did CPR then the doctor turned up. Colm had to have more treatment on the way to the hospital and we’ve got to see an expert.” Truck driver Colm, 35, suffered a mystery allergic reaction on Saturday and was taken to hospital, but was sent home only for it to happen again the next day. The second attack was so serious that his airway swelled, preventing him from breathing, his blood pressure dropped suddenly, and his heart stopped for a moment. He has now made a full recovery from his suffering. 39. Izzy kicked her father in the chest_________. A. to express her helplessness B. to practise CPR on him C. to keep him awake D. to restart his heat 40. What’s the right order of the events? ① Izzy kicked Colm ② Debbie called 999 ③ Izzy learned CPR ④ Colm’s heart stopped. A. ③①②④ B.④②③① C. ③④②① D. ④③①② 41. What does Paragraph 8 mainly talk about? A .What Colm suffered. B. Colm’s present condition. C .What caused Colm’s allergy. D. Symptoms of Colm’s allergic reaction. 42. Why does the author write the news? A. To describe a serious accident. B. To prove the importance of CPR. C. To report a 9-year-old girl’s brave act. D .To call people’s attention to allergic reaction. 根据文章第一段及第二段话Izzy, nine, restarted father Colm’s heart by stamping(踩)on his chest after he fell down at home and stopped breathing可知,女孩的父亲因为严重的过敏反应导致心脏骤停,她踩她父亲的胸部,目的是让他父亲的心脏重新起搏。 40. B。 D With around 100 students scheduled to be in that 9 am Monday morning lecture, it is no surprise that almost 20 people actually make it to the class and only 10 of them are still awake after the first 15 minutes; it is not even a surprise that most of them are still in their pyjamas(睡衣).Obviously, students are terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule. All human beings possess a body clock. Along with other alerting(警报)systems, this governs the sleep/wake cycle and is therefore one of the main processes which govern sleep behaviour. Typically, the preferred sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents, which leads to many students not feeling sleepy until much later in the evenings. This typical sleep pattern is usually referred to as the “night owl” schedule of sleep. This is opposed to the “early bird” schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to stay up much past midnight. Such a person has great difficulty in waking up in the mornings. Research suggests that night owls feel most alert and function best in the evenings and at night. Research findings have shown that about 20 percent of people can be classified as “night owls” and only 10 percent can be classified as “early birds”—the other 70 percent are in the middle. Although this is clearly not true for all students, for the ones who are true night owls this gives them an excellent excuse for missing their lectures which unfortunately fall before midday. 43. What does the author stress in Paragraph 1? A. Many students are absent from class. B. Students are very tired on Monday mornings. C. Students do not adjust their sleep patterns well. D. Students are not well prepared for class on Mondays. 44. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2? A. Most students prefer to get up late in the morning. B. Students don’t sleep well because of alerting systems. C. One’s body clock governs the sleep/wake cycle independently. D. Adolescents’ delayed sleep/wake cycle isn’t the preferred pattern. 45. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “classified”? A. Criticised. B. Grouped. C. Organised. D. Named. 46. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Functions of the body clock. B. The “night owl” phenomenon. C. Human beings’ sleep behaviour. D. The school schedule of “early bird”. Obviously, students are terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule。 根据文章第二段the preferred sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents(首选的醒睡周期在青少年身上被推迟了)第三段话This is opposed to the “early bird” schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to stay up much past midnight可知,这种“night owl”现象是一种紊乱,并不是较优的睡眠周期。 45. E Women are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why? Researchers have found it’s all down to the hormone oxytocin(荷尔蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently. “Women tend to be social in their behavior. They often share with others. But men tend to be competitive. They are trying to improve their social status,” said Professor Ryan. Generally, people believe that the hormone exytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our body creates a large amount of it during positive social interaction(互动)such as falling in love or giving birth. But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy. Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relationships, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship. Professor Ryan’s recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37. Half of the participants(参与者)received oxytocin. The other half received placebo(安慰剂). After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same procedure with the other material. Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social interactions. Then they were asked to analyze the relationships by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions. The results indicated that, after treatment with oxytocin, men’s ability to correctly recognize competitive relationships improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better. Professor Ryan thus concluded: “Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people’s abilities to better distinguish different social interactions. And the behavior differences between men and women are caused by biological factor(因素)that are mainly hormonal.” 47. What causes men and women to behave differently according to the text? A. Placebo. B. Oxytocin. C. The gesture. D. The social status. 48. What can we learn from Professor Ryan’s previous experiment? A. Oxytocin affects our behavior in a different way. B. Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love. C. Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others’ success. D. Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people’s behavior differences. 49. Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment? A. To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social interactions. B. To know the differences between friendship and competition. C. To know people’s different abilities to answer questions. D. To test people’s understanding of body language. 50. The author develops the text by _______. A. explaining people’s behavior B. describing his own experiences C. distinguishing sexual differences D. discussing research experiments 【内容要点】 本文是一篇科普文。 Women are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why? Researchers have found it’s all down to the hormone oxytocin(荷尔蒙催生素)可知,男女之间行为表现的不同是完全由于荷尔蒙催生素。 48. But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy可知,在消极的如妒忌这类社会交往中,我们身体也释放出荷尔蒙。 49. Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people’s abilities to better distinguish different social interactions可知,最近这次实验是想测试一下荷尔蒙催生素对辨认社交能力的效果,而结果证实了荷尔蒙催生素能提高人们的这种能力。 50. (共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) Mary: Mike, how do I look in these blue jeans? As he was approaching 60, I had a fun idea: What if I could get the memories people had of him, put each one into an envelope—60 in total—and have him open them, one by one, on his birthday? So I wrote an e-mail to family and friends, explaining my idea. I sent the e-mail and waited. And then the replies started coming in and I was very, very surprised. There were so many memories, and they were all so lovely. They came from the ’50s, ’60s,’70s, from every decade(十年)between now and the day my dad was born. They came from my mother, my siblings, my grandma, my dad’s friends from high school, his sister, my dad’s first boss, a colleague at his first job, from people who hadn’t seen my dad in 40 years, from people I myself hadn’t even informed. They typed them and handwrote them. They mailed them and e-mailed them. The night before Dad's birthday, my sister and I stayed up late, putting everything together with some envelopes. The next morning, after breakfast and presents and cake, we gave the pile of envelopes to him. "Just one more thing for you,” we said. It took him a long time to open them and read. Each one was a brief ticket to another time, a leap(跳跃)backward over years and decades. There was a lot of laughter and a few tears, too. I was kind of sad when the project was over because it was great fun to collect these memories. It gave me a different picture of dad. 56. Today, I am going to talk with what you should do when a fire alarm go off. If you hear the alarm, stand in line at the door and wait your teacher to lead you outside. Stay close to your teacher and classmate. Don’t panic or get out of line, and trying to remain quiet and calmly. Soon the firefighters will come and put out a fire. If it’s a false alarm and there is no fire, your teacher will lead us back to the classroom. If you notice that when someone is missing and hurt, tell your teacher immediately. 【答案与解析】 1.with改为about。考查介词。此处应为talk about something“谈论关于某事”。 2.go改为goes。考查主谓一致。主语a fire alarm为单数,故谓语动词使用第三人称单数形式。 3.wait后加for。考查介词。此处wait为不及物动词,后接宾语时需加上介词for。 4.classmate改为classmates。考查名词。此处表达同班同学应为复数形式。 5.trying改为try。考查非谓语动词。此处为祈使句,应以动词原形开头。 6.calm改为calmly。考查形容词和副词。此句remain为系动词,后接形容词作表语。 7.a改为the。考查冠词。第二次提到某一名词,需特指。 8.us改为you。考查代词。根据句意:你的老师会带你们回教室。 9.去掉when。考查从属连词。根据句意,如果你注意到有人失踪或受伤…… ,可知此处是that引导的宾语从句表陈述,故when多余。 10.and改为or。 参考词汇:高考college entrance examination Dear Sam, Thank you for your concern.___________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ Best wishes! Well, I’m now taking the once-a-year college entrance examination. We are scheduled to attend the exam on June 7th and 8th, on the first day of which Chinese and math will be tested, the second day geography, history, politics and English. Over the past ten months, we have been busy in preparing for this examination. Besides listening to teachers carefully in class, we often work deep into night. Therefore, I believe I can succeed. At first, I felt a little bit nervous but soon I calmed down because Chinese and math, I came to realize, were very easy and English is my favorite subject, you know. So I suppose I can get a good mark which will enable me to enter my ideal college. Best wishes! Yours, Li Xia查看更多
