课时作业 八 模块2 Unit 1 Tales of the unexplained 2‎ 建议时间 / 35分钟 ‎ ‎ Ⅰ.阅读理解 词数: 318 主题:地画 文体:说明文 The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient geoglyphs (地画) in the Nazca Desert, in southern Peru. They are ranging from geometric patterns to drawings of different animals and stylized human-like forms. The ancient lines can only be truly taken in from high in the air, leaving generations puzzled as to how these precise works could have been completed long before the documented invention of human flight.‎ The Lines were first spotted when commercial airlines began flying across the Peruvian desert in the 1920s. Who built them and what was their purpose? Are they roads, star pointers, maybe even a gigantic map? If the people who lived here 2,000 years ago had only a simple technology, how did they manage to construct such precise figures? Did they have a plan? These markings are like a vast puzzle. ‎ The Nazca Lines are the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world. There are also huge geoglyphs in Egypt, Malta, the United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Bolivia and in other countries. But the Nazca geoglyphs, because of their numbers, characteristics, dimensions and cultural continuity as they were made and remade throughout a certain history period, form the most impressive archeological(考古学的) group. ‎ The Nazca plain is unique for its ability to preserve the markings upon it, due to the combination of the climate (one of the driest on Earth, with only twenty minutes of rainfall per year) and the flat, stony ground which minimizes the effect of the wind at ground level. With no dust or sand to cover the plain and little rain or wind to erode(腐蚀) it, lines drawn here tend to stay drawn. These factors, combined with the existence of lighter-coloured subsoil beneath the desert surface, provide a vast writing pad that is suited to the artist who wants to leave his mark eternal.‎ ‎1. What can we know about the Nazca Lines from the first two paragraphs?‎ A.They were built as a big map.‎ B.They were formed by nature.‎ C.They are ancient lines in caves.‎ D.They are huge markings in a desert.‎ ‎2. Why are the Nazca Lines well preserved?‎ A.Because of the wind at ground level.‎ B.Because of the existence of soft soil.‎ C.Because of the climate and geography.‎ D.Because of the thick sand on the top.‎ ‎4. What does the underlined word “eternal” probably mean?‎ A.Non-stop. B.Everlasting. ‎ C.Real-life. D.High-end. ‎ Ⅱ.阅读七选五 The running of the bulls is a nine-day traditional Spanish festival in honour of Saint Fermin in Pamplona. Every year, at midday on July 6th, the Mayor of Pamplona shoots a rocket. 5 The participants are usually dressed in white and wear red neckerchiefs and belts. They open champagne(香槟酒) mostly used for sprinkling(撒) other people. ‎ ‎ 6 It starts every day at eight in the morning and the runners run, sometimes wildly, sometimes less. They shoot the first rocket as a sign that the run has begun. Then they shoot the second one when the bulls are out in the streets. Six bulls which are trying to attack the participants from behind run down the 900-metre-long street with a lot of spectators. 7 All of the six bulls are going to be killed at the bullfight in the stadium. ‎ The bullfight in the stadium begins at half past six in the afternoon. First, there comes the first bull. There is also a person called “picador”. 8 That makes the bull very wild and it starts to run all over the stadium. Later when the bull is tired, there comes another person—a “matador” who kills it with an arrow. 9 At the end of the celebration, another rocket is shot as a sign that the bullfight is finished. ‎ A.It makes the bull very nervous.‎ B.It is one of the greatest events in the city.‎ C.The main event is the running of the bulls.‎ D.He waves a red cloth in front of the bull.‎ E.This is a sign that the celebration has started.‎ F.The participants can get injured or even killed.‎ G.The same thing happens to the other five bulls. ‎ Ⅲ.完形填空 词数:335 主题:感恩 文体:记叙文 ‎“God, give us thankful hearts for these and for all our many blessings.” That was the 10 my father, an East Texas farmer, said over every meal. ‎ Pa passed away long ago, but I try to 11 his example every day.
