A majority (57%) of teens view their cell phone as the key to their social life. Second only to clothing, teens say, a person's cell phone tells the most about their social status or popularity, outranking jewelry, watches and shoes. More than half of the respondents (52%) agree that the cell phone has become a new form of entertainment. Onethird of teens play games on their phone. 80% say their cell phone provides a sense of security while on the go, confirming that the cell phone has become their mobile safety net when needing a ride (79%), getting important information (51%), or just helping out someone in trouble (35%). Teens carry cell phones to have access to friends, family and current events. Though only about one in five (18%) teens care to pinpoint the location of their family and friends via their cell phone, 36% hate the idea of a cell phone feature that allows others to know their exact location. The study also confirmed that texting is replacing talking among teens. Teens admitted spending nearly an equal amount of time talking as they do texting each month. The feature is so important to them that if texting were no longer an option 47% of teens say their social life would end or be worsened — that's especially so among females (54% vs. 40%). Teens say texting has advantages over talking because it offers more options, including multitasking, speed, the option to avoid verbal (口头的) communication, and because it is fun, according to the study. With more than 1 billion text messages sent each day, it is no surprise that 42% of teens say they can text blindfolded, the study found. The survey asked teens what future changes they'd like to see in wireless services and devices and found that respondents want cell phones that break boundaries (界线) and are personalized to fit their lifestyles. Teens remain excited and openminded about the wireless possibilities and their ideal future mobile devices would feature five applications — phone, MP3 player, GPS, laptop computer and video player, according to Harris. “In the future, mobility for teens means mobile banking, mobile voting, location based services, personal entertainment — the sky is the limit for how mobile our lifestyles can be,” said Steve Largent, president and CEO, CTIA — The Wireless Association. “We've certainly come a long way in 25 years and expect teens to be a growth driver for the industry and have a major impact on the wireless landscape for years to come.” Cell Phones — Key To Teens' Social Life The (1)________ of a national survey •Nearly 47% of US teens say that their social life would end or become (2)________ without their cell phone. •Nearly 57% believe that cell phones can improve their life. The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around looking for its missing piece. But because it was incomplete and therefore could roll only very slowly, it admired the flowers along the way. It chatted with worms. It enjoyed the sunshine. Finally it found a piece that fit perfectly. It was so happy. Now that it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to notice flowers or talk to the worms. When it realized how different the world seemed when it rolled so quickly, it stopped, left its found piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away. In some strange sense we are more whole when we are missing something. The man who has everything is in some ways a poor man. He will never know what it feels like to yearn (渴望), to hope, to nourish ( 滋 润 ) his soul with the dream of something better. He will never know the experience of having someone who loves him give him something he has always wanted or never had. There is wholeness about the person who has come to terms with his limitations, who has been brave enough to let go of his unrealistic dreams and does not feel like a failure for doing so. There is wholeness about the man or woman who has learned that he or she is strong enough to go through a tragedy (悲剧) and survive — he or she can lose someone and still feel like a complete person. Life is more like a baseball season, when even the best team loses one third of its games and even the worst team has its days of brilliance. Our goal is to win more games than we lose. When we accept that imperfection is part of being human, and when we can continue rolling through life and appreciate it, we will have achieved wholeness that others can only long for. 语篇解读:本文是一篇议论文。文章以一个小故事引出话题——人生不在于完美,而在 于完整。 3.Which may be an example of being whole? But they won't just affect us humans — the coming revolution in autonomous transport has significant meaning for wildlife as well. Nature conservationists and planners need to think hard about the impact of driverless vehicles, especially in terms of the expanding of the cities. In some ways, wider developments in automotive technology are good for the environment. Electric cars will increasingly replace the internal combustion engine ( 内 燃 机 ), and that should, in theory, reduce carbon emissions and healthdisturbing air pollution. Through minimizing traffic jams, driverless cars may also reduce energy use on the whole. Unlike human drivers, computers can avoid needless acceleration and braking that worsen jams. And, as autonomous vehicles aren't limited by human reaction times, it may make sense to increase speed limits for them on major intercity routes. So driverless cars promise a future of faster journey times with much reduced environmental impact! They may even mean less wildlife roadkill. But it's the very efficiency of driverless cars that brings a challenge for planners and conservationists. The threat is an unchecked increase in lowdensity urbanization. Autonomous vehicles promise a future in which passengers are free to use their time productively (working, for example). And they can park themselves, which saves yet more time in the morning rush. Coupled with faster journey times, the motivation to live further out of town will increase significantly. There are both push and pull factors at work here: skyhigh residential prices in most cities push people away from city centres while healthy environments and green living pull people towards the countryside. The limiting factor in suburban (郊区的) spread is often travel time, either by public or private means. Driverless cars completely change the situation. Existing planning policies are based on our current transport systems. Green belts, for example, are designed to reduce the expanding of the cities by restricting development within a buffer zone (缓冲地带) around an urban area. However, the reduced transport times offered by driverless cars make it easier to live outside the belt while still working inside. So these belts of green are in danger of becoming a thin layer in a sandwich of everspreading suburbanisation. This is, of course, a familiar challenge since the rise of the automotive age in the 1940s. However, the solutions designed by planners have been calibrated (标 定 ) for a humandriving automotive system — not for the supercharged future of driverless transport. Other examples of planning protection for wildlife include nature reserves, national parks and (in the UK) “Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty”. Such areas have either strict control on development, or do not permit it at all. However, they are nice places to live in or nearby. The coming revolution in automotive journey times and the ability to work behind the (computerdriven) wheel will make living in such areas increasingly compatible (可共存的) with a journey to the nearest city. Natural habitats (栖息地) being lost entirely or broken into eversmaller parts have long been understood as some of the primary causes of species' disappearing across the world. The expanding of the cities threatens to increase the extent of both habitat deprivation and breaking. These threats are well known among conservationists, but there are differences in opinions on how best to respond. There're many problems in making humans move into cities, but the nearterm planning issues caused by autonomous vehicles will worsen the challenge given that they will lift demand to live in “unspared” lands. Alternatively, some conservationists advocate “landsharing”, in which human communities redesign the way we farm and live so as to coexist with wildlife. Autonomous vehicles bring significant challenges for either approach. Whichever approach is taken, we'll need to redesign existing systems and policies to take account of the increased range that driverless transport speeds. This may involve new zoning laws to protect wider areas of countryside than at present. It certainly requires further development of green basic facilities and services, habitat corridors and “greenways”. But the twenties is just like any other life stage, and before you know it, it is gone. To prevent your 20s leaving you with regrets, you should try to avoid some common mistakes people in their 20s often make. In other words, firstly, don't spend money on a careless basis. Buying whatever you want and eating out almost every day may make you feel good at the moment, but it'll make you poor in the long run. Even if you have a salary that's more than enough for your living expenses, you still won't be able to make progress in your financial goals if you constantly spend more than what you earn. Remember that your financial choices today will make an impact on your future. Ensure you spend your money on things that will move you forward towards your financial goals. Secondly, don't stick to a deadend job, a job with low wages and no chance of progress. With piles of student debt, you find it bad just to consider quitting your job. But have you thought of the time and energy you're wasting on a job that doesn't suit your strengths and interests? If you haven't figured out what your dream job is, then use this stage to find out what it is. To achieve this, create a list of career ideas that you think will suit your strengths and interests, and then get your feet wet. Ask people who are in these industries about the job and what needs to be done to take you there. These steps help build the bridge to your dream job. Thirdly, don't give up dreams because you're afraid you'll fail. Fear is a powerful emotion. You feel it especially when you're chasing something that's bigger than yourself. But don't let it stop you. Whether you dream of traveling the world or starting your own business, don't let the fear of failure keep you from taking action. There will always be mistakes and failures when you pursue your dream and trying won't do you harm. The most successful people have also felt the fear but what sets them apart from the rest is that they take action anyway. Last but not least, don't give in to naysayers (经常否定的人). On your journey towards your dream, there will be people who don't believe in your ability and your dream. Don't give in to their negativity and don't argue with them. Just let them say what they have to say and do your own things. Sometimes you need these people to help you evaluate how badly you want your dream to come true. If you really want it, then you'll still pursue it even if no one believes you. You should avoid making common mistakes in your 20s Introduction •You may consider your twenties as a (1)________ life stage. •You should enjoy your twenties best by getting rid of common mistakes people often commit in their twenties. Not taking a proper lunch break is unhealthy. It can make people sick, so then they need time off work. The study is from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) in the U.K. It interviewed over 2,000 people about what they do during lunch at work. Twenty percent of the workers said they did not take a lunch break. They worked through their lunch hour. Half of the people took a break but ate their lunch at their desk and surfed the Internet, answered emails or went on Facebook ... The CSP told companies they should encourage all staff to take a regular lunch break. It said workers need to get more exercise at work so they do not get ill. CSP spokeswoman Karen Middleton warned that when employees get sick because they do not take breaks, companies lose money. She also said, “Everybody should find ways to solve the big problem of inactivity ( 不 活 动 ) and we would encourage people to take responsibility for their own health.” A study shows many people still work during their lunch hour instead of taking a break properly, which harms their health. The CSP spokeswoman suggests that everybody be responsible for his own health. People around me do different things during the lunch hour. My father is accustomed to taking a nap after lunch while my mother often goes out for a walk near her company with her workmates. Many of my classmates choose to sleep for half an hour after lunch. As a senior high school student, I have developed the good habit of taking a nap during the lunch break. Without it, I will feel sleepy the whole afternoon, which causes me to be unable to concentrate on my study. As we all know, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So I think it's necessary to take a break after lunch. Only in this way can we keep healthy and work well.
