One such beautiful creation is the king in the sea — the whale. Do you know when and where to see the whales? The Maldives Best time to visit: October to November or February to April. This destination with wonderful beauty and a rather quiet atmosphere has some of the most unusual species of whales to offer. Located in the tropical(热带的)sea, it is a very isolated place as it is said that one can go on a sailing for days and she or he might not come across another soul during the voyage. Iceland Best time to visit: May to September. Now this destination is great in its own way, offering pleasant sights of whales under the light of the midnight sun, right below the earth’s Arctic Circle. Iceland has a number of species of whales, including humpback whales(座头鲸)and the blue whales. Alaska Best time to visit: August. 19 第页 Alaska is mainly famous for having a variety of feeding humpback whales — which are known to be one of the world’s largest and most fascinating species. The best part about this whale watching site is that one can actually see groups of whales flying in the air from time to time, forming a round shape with their groups. Antarctic Peninsula(南极半岛) Best time to visit: January to February. If one is an admirer of nature, wanting to see groups of nature’s creations together with the ice — this is the best place for him or her. With a variety of whales gathering on top of the ice in the peninsula, this destination is worth all the time and resources invested. 21. The Maldives is unique because there you can ________. A. see a number of blue whales B. enjoy the most beautiful scenery C. experience an isolated feeling D. meet some rare species of whales 22. What is special in Antarctic Peninsula? A. large areas of ice B. diverse whales C. beautiful scenery D. animals playing with ice 23. You can most probably read the text in_______. A. a newspaper B. a textbook C. a travel guide D. a telephone book B “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” -----Albert Einstein If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, chances are you have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy(脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication challenges and sight problems, that standard assessments (and by standard, I mean the ones used to assess kids with special needs ) aren’t always an accurate measure of her abilities. By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year-old teacher in Jacksonville, Florida ,who starts his special education class by calling up each student individually to give them much admiration and a high-five. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence and self-worth increase rapidly,” he said . All I could think was: How lucky these students are to have such inspirational teachers. Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: awesome. Her teacher doesn’t 19 第页 focus on what can’t be done—she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase tenfold. She uses words she wouldn’t have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmate’s trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try. I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all possess. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success. Ulmer’s reach as a teacher goes far beyond the walls of his classroom. In fact, he teaches all of us to take a moment and truly appreciate the strengths of an important person in our lives. 24. What does the underlined “it” in Line 5 refer to? A. The cerebral palsy with Syona. B. The saying on a classroom wall. C. The standard for kids with special needs. D. The accurate measure of Syona’s abilities. 25. What can we learn about Chris Ulmer? A. He is Syona’s favorite teacher. B. He helps increase his students’ confidence. C. He uses videos to teach his students. D. He asks his students to help each other. 26. Why did Syona feel very pleased in the third paragraph? A. She has developed a positive attitude. B. Her mother knew what she expressed. C. Her progress was appreciated by her parents. D. She had been to Ecuador with her classmate. 27. What change has taken place in the author’s family? A. They invite Ulmer’s students to their home. B. They visit Umer’s classroom regularly. C. They feel grateful to people in their lives. D. They give each other praise every day. C A guiding principle for master cellist Yo-Yo Ma is that “the intersection(交汇) of cultures is where new things 19 第页 appear.” Certainly his biography is an intersection of cultures. He was born to Chinese parents in Paris, France; both his parents were musicians. When he was seven, his family moved to the United States. Gifted for his age, Ma attended Juilliard, the world famous music institute. He then chose to earn a liberal arts degree at Harvard rather than focusing only on music. Even in his earliest performing years, Yo-Yo Ma had a strong belief that it was important to share music with all kinds of people. Stories are told about how he once performed in the hallway of a large building for people who were unable to get tickets to his concert. He remained interested in making music accessible to diverse audiences and furthered his interest in different cultures when he visited the Bushmen of the Kalahari. He developed a vehicle to further these ideals when he founded the Silk Road Project. As he has said, the Silk Road is a metaphor(隐喻) for a number of things: as the Internet of ancient times, the routes were used for trade, by religious people, adventurers, scientists, storytellers. Everything from algebra to Islam moved along the Silk Road. It’s the local-global thing. In the cultural world, you want to make sure that voices don’t get lost, that rich traditions continue to live, without becoming common. This lesson explores the philosophy behind Yo-Yo Ma’s founding of the Silk Road Ensemble(乐团), his belief that the arts, and particularly music, can make the world better, and that through cooperation, one can both preserve tradition and shape cultural evolution. Students also explore their own attitudes toward the arts, writing reflective essays on how the arts have played a role in their own lives. 28.What do we learn about Yo-Yo Ma according to Paragraph 1? A. He studied music in France B. He started his career in Harvard C. He showed great musical talent D. He earned a liberal arts degree in Julliard 29.Which of the following can best replace the word “vehicle” in Paragraph 2? A. Car B. Medium C. Skill D. Project 30.What does Yo-Yo Ma think of the Silk Road? A. The route is key to musical development B. It has significant influence on the world C. It simply helps with the spread of religions D. Traditions are passed on through the route 31.Why did Yo-Yo Ma found the Silk Road Ensemble? A. To foster cooperation in business B. To record the voices along the route C. To explore people’s attitude toward the arts 19 第页 D. To share music and promote cultural development D Halloween is a holiday full of tricks and treats and all things frightening and fun. But what happens when you trade your sweets for a scare? The result is always healthier than candy. Being frightened can be good for you. Think about your favorite scary books or movies. You are scared but you just can’t resist reading or watching them. Being frightened makes your brain flood with healthy chemical substances that excite your mood and release feelings of great excitement. When you’re frightened, your body also produces a chemical called oxytocin, which helps people bond with one another. So, if youre at a haunted(闹鬼的) house with some pals, that experience can help solidify your friendship. “Watch people walking out of a haunted house, and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives,” says Dr. Margee Kerr, a sociologist who studies fear. There is also some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations. Things like giving a presentation in front of your class or performing in a school play can make us fearful and anxious. But these experiences help build a sort of endurance to fear that makes us more confident. “You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you’re better able to work through it during tense situations,” Kerr explains. Though some haunting may be healthy, it’s important to remember that people experience fear in different ways. What may be fun for one person could be too scary for another. And Kerr notes that kids younger than six and or seven can’t separate real and make-believe, so seeing something frightening could have lasting, negative effects. 32.Why does the author mention “Halloween” in Paragraph 1? A.To make a suggestion. B. To introduce a topic. C. To offer an instruction. D. To present a report. 33.What does the underlined words “high fives” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Putting hands up to give in. B. Waving hands to say goodbye. C. Hitting palms together to show happiness. D. Folding palms together to express thanks. 19 第页 34.How is the text developed? A.By analyzing reasons. B. By providing statistics. C. By making comparisons. D. By giving examples. 35.What can we learn from the text? A.We’ll feel worried if we’re scared. B.Being frightened helps people stay closer. C.Fearfulness controls our confidence. D.Being scared can be good for everyone. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. I’m afraid it’s time for the film. Let’s go inside and enjoy the film first. 听下面一段对话,回答第13至第16四个小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。 (Text 9) 19 第页 M: Lily, where do you like to eat? W: Well, my favorite restaurant is The Knife and Talk. It’s very near the city center. At lunch it’s full of office workers, but I like to go before that, in the middle of the morning. I go there and order big breakfast and take one of their newspapers and just relax for an hour or so. Their pancakes are delicious. They don’t have a TV in there, which I love most. They just have some jazz music, very quiet, nothing too loud. What’s your favorite restaurant? M: Well, it’s just a very simple restaurant. There are only about six tables in there. A couple of waitresses wear ugly pink uniforms. But the food is great, very tasty, and cheap too, which is important, of course. There are some truck drivers sitting at the counter drinking coffee and eating sausages every morning. I always have pancakes in the morning and their fish pie for lunch. That restaurant has been open for many years. They say the actor James Dean eats there sometimes, but I don’t think that’s true. 听下面一段独白,回答第17至第20四个小题。现在,你有20秒钟的时间阅读这四个小题。 (Text 10) W: Good morning, everyone. This is Helen Green with What to Do Today on the air. It’s quite a warm and sunny Saturday. Now, if you’ve got nothing to do today, why not go to East Mountain in the city and get digging? That’s the message from Sussex Middle School. It is organizing a tree-planting activity in East Mountain. Sussex Middle School is a member of the organization of Helping Blind Children. It is raising money for poor blind children in Asia by planting trees. A famous computer company agrees to give $30 for each tree to be planted in the city. Sussex Middle School is planning to plant 1,500 trees this weekend. Students and their parents are hoping to plant a half today. They are looking for volunteers to come along and help. Tree-planting experience is not necessary as there will be experts to give directions. Thick gloves will be provided to protect your hands when you are doing the digging. There’re also hats provided. And please do bring basic tools with you to dig holes and water trees. Everyone is welcome to come along anytime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend. So it could be really a nice day out for all the families. This is What to Do Today. Thanks for your listening. Enjoy your day. 19 第页查看更多
