Paintings of Egyptians dating back over 4,000 years show both men and women painting their nails and wearing makeup. In 18th-century France, wealthy noblemen wore large wigs (假发) of long, white hair to make themselves attractive. Today, people continue to devote a lot of time and money to their appearance.‎ ‎ There is at least one good reason for the desire to be attractive: beauty is power. Studies suggest that good-looking people make more money, get called on more often in class, and are regarded as friendlier.‎ ‎ But what exactly is beauty? It’s difficult to describe it clearly, and yet we know it when we see it. And our awareness of it may start at a very early age. In one set of studies, six-month-old babies were shown a series of photographs. The faces on the pictures had been rated for attractiveness by a group of college students. In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones.‎ ‎ The idea that even babies can judge appearance makes perfect sense to many researchers. In studies by psychologists, men consistently showed a preference for women with larger eyes, fuller lips, and a smaller nose and chin while women prefer men with large shoulders and a narrow waist. According to scientists, the mind unconsciously tells men and women that these traits―the full lips, clear skin, strong shoulders―equal health and genetic well-being.‎ ‎ Not everyone thinks the same way, however. “Our hardwiredness can be changed by all sorts of expectations—mostly cultural,” says C. Loring Brace, an anthropologist at the University of Michigan. What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another. Look at most Western fashion magazines: the women on the pages are thin. But is this “perfect” body type for women worldwide? Scientists’ answer is no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and varies around the world. They found native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded overweight in Western cultures.‎ ‎ For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical traits considered universally appealing, it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard. Beauty really is, as the saying goes, in the eye of the beholder.‎ ‎24.People’s ideas about beauty _______.‎ A. have existed since ancient times B. can be easily described C. have little influence on a person’s success D. are based upon strict criteria ‎25.In Paragraph 3, the babies in the study _______.‎ A. were rated for their appearance B. were entered in a beauty contest C. were shown photos of a group of college students D. were able to tell attractive faces from unattractive ones ‎26.The underlined word “traits” in Paragraph 4 probably means _______.‎ A. qualities B. measurement C. judgments D. standards ‎27.We can learn from the passage that _______.‎ A. the ideas of beauty vary as people grow up B. the search for beauty is rooted in lack of confidence C. the standards for beauty are based on scientific researches D. the understanding of beauty depends on cultural backgrounds C Being able to experience a different environment and custom will give us a new perspective on everything we thought we knew and understood. Maybe, going abroad is an opportunity to look again at not only the country and the people who live there but also ourselves. ‎ I had never expected to visit Paris. The French culture didn’t interest me that much, and Paris seemed too big, too touristy, too much. But when I found myself standing next to the Opera National de Paris, completely alone and totally lost, I knew I was in for an interesting ride. I had decided to take a summer history class abroad, and Paris just happened to be where it was set. My teacher eventually found me and other jet-lagged students and walked us down to where we would be staying. Even then, tired, hungry, and feeling displaced, I was unable to keep myself from marveling at the beauty of the city. ‎ The next day in the grocery store, trying to decide if the box I was holding contained butter or cream cheese, I suddenly realized I was a foreigner that didn’t speak the language. The cashier and I had a conversation completely with gestures. For the most part, it didn’t seem to bother the French that I was utterly incompetent in speaking their language. In fact, from my first unclear “bonjour” many of them would directly switch over to English.‎ Time flew by. In the mornings we had class, and in the afternoons we were given a lot of freedom to do what we pleased. We explored everywhere in the city, becoming experts at using the Metro, and walking so much that our legs were sore every night.‎ Living in Paris was a huge change in my lifestyle. Everything I did was more relaxed. I stopped worrying about the future and instead focused on living in the present. I stopped wearing a watch because time didn’t matter. We ate when we were hungry, went to bed when we were tired and explored in between. I no longer mind that Paris is so big; it’s an old, beautiful metropolis full of culture and history. On one of my last days there, standing on top of the Arc du Triumph with a 360 degree view of Paris, I finally admitted something to myself. The city that I had never wanted to visit had turned into the city that I never wanted to leave.‎ ‎28. The writer came to Paris because ______. ‎ A. he wanted to have an interesting ride B. he attended a course in summer C. he admired its beautiful scenery D. he was alone and lost his way ‎29. On the first day in Paris, the writer felt _____.‎ A. lonely in the big city B. bored with his visit C. surprised at its beauty D. interested in its culture ‎30. The example of the grocery store is used to illustrate _____.‎ A. the little influence of language barrier B. the big difficulty of living abroad C. the great importance of gestures D. the intelligence of French people ‎31. By mentioning the uselessness of the watch, the author probably wants to prove ______.‎ A. time in Paris is not worth counting ‎ B. he enjoys the time in Paris very much C. life seems meaningful without time ‎ D. he has to spend a long time to visit the big city D Love to sink into your chairs and relax when you get to school? Then you will not be happy to hear that schools all over the world are seriously considering exchanging traditional desks for ones with no seats at all — Yes, that means you will be encouraged to stand through those already too long math and science lessons! Why would anyone even think of putting kids to such cruelty? Experts say it improves their health and helps fight obesity. While that may seem a little far-fetched (牵强的) , the officials at the few schools around the world seem to agree.‎ ‎ Among them are educators from the College Station Independent School District in Texas, who recently completed a week-long experiment involving 480 students across three elementary schools. The 374 kids that agreed to participate in the study were provided a device that helped record step count and calorie consumption over the entire period.‎ All 25 teachers involved in the study reported that students appeared to be more alert and concentrate better, when allowed to stand. The one thing that did surprise the researchers was that younger kids were more willing to stay standing than kids in higher grades. They believe this may have something to do with the fact that after years of being asked to “sit still”, older kids have a harder time adjusting to this unexpected freedom.‎ ‎ American schools are not the only ones reporting success with stand-up desks. Four Catholic schools in Perth, Australia, which have been testing them since October 2013, have seen similar results. In May 2014, Grove House Primary School in Bradford, West Yorkshire, became Europe’s first test one, with a seven-week trial that involved the use of desks made by Ergotron in their fifth-grade classrooms. While official results are not out yet, early reactions from both teachers and students, have been extremely encouraging.‎ ‎ The findings of these studies and others done previously, all seem to mean that allowing kids to move around in classrooms is a win-win for students and teachers — it helps kids get healthier and provides educators with a more engaged audience.‎ ‎32. According to the first paragraph, what may make the students at school unhappy is that ________.‎ A. they have to exchange desks with each other B. there are no seats for them to sit in class C. they have to exchange traditional desks for ones with no seats ‎ D. the officials show no sympathy to them at all ‎33. According to the teachers, older students may not like stand-up desks because ________.‎ A. they are cleverer than younger students B. they have formed the habit of sitting C. they are easily tired of standing long ‎ D. they do badly in class while standing ‎34. What is most likely to be the result of the seven-week trial?‎ A. The standing desks can’t be used at all.‎ B. More tests should be done in other schools.‎ C. It is good for students to use stand-up desks.‎ D. The students are different in personality.‎ ‎35. Why do the teachers like the standing desks?‎ A. Because the educators can draw the students’ attention.‎ B. Because the teachers can keep the students healthy.‎ C. Because the students can have a walk in the classroom.‎ D. Because the standing desks can keep the students concentrated.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Mary had feared the day she would draw a blank during a presentation. I firmly think that by reading not only can we enrich our life and broaden our horizons but also we can learn to perfect our personality. Now that reading is good for us, let’s develop a good habit of reading. I strongly suggest that every one of us should read at least one or two good books every term.‎ ‎ Thank you all!‎
