In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months ‎ 7‎ studying dictionaries. ‎ Perhaps the show's popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy(书法)to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list. The result? It's possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them. ‎ But there's still hope for the paint brush. China's Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write. ‎ In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of sixyearolds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher's examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin. “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture, ” she answers. “Students must learn now so they don't forget when they grow up. ” says the teacher. ‎ ‎1. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise—and as a result, we are growing old unnecessarily soon. ‎ Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of aging could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand ‎ 7‎ people of different ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side parts of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual on economical faculties. Contraction of front and side parts—as cells die off—was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixtyand seventyyearolds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to the contraction normally connected with age—using the head. ‎ The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the town. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking (萎缩) brains as the farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants. ‎ Matsuzawa's findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. “The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain. ” he says. “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don't rely on pocket calculators. ”‎ ‎【解题导语】 本文讲述了日本一个医学研究团队的研究结果:越是乐于思考、使用大脑的人, 越不容易脑衰老。‎ ‎5.The team of doctors wanted to find out ________. ‎ A.the size of certain people's brains B.how to make people live longer C.which people are most intelligent D.why certain people are aging sooner than others 解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第二段第一句“Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of aging could be slowed down. ”可知,医生们想要研究如何减缓老龄化的过程, 也就是说如何让人们更长寿。故答案为B。‎ ‎6. On what are their research findings based? ‎ A.The study of brain volumes of different people. ‎ B.The study of brain volumes of old people. ‎ C.The latest development of computer technology. ‎ 7‎ D.A survey of farmers in northern Japan. 根据第二段第二句中的“he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations”可知,通过测量一千个不同年龄不同职业的人的脑容量来做实验。 A。‎ ‎7. The doctors' tests show that ________. ‎ A.our brains shrink as we grow older B.the front section of the brain does not shrink C.sixtyyearolds have better brains than thirtyyearolds D.some people's brains have contracted more than other people's 解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the town. ”可知,研究发现农村的人比城镇的人的大脑更早开始萎缩。 然后又列出不同职业的对比, 脑萎缩最慢的是律师, 紧接着是大学教授、医生, 然后又列出其他职业。这都说明有些人的脑萎缩比较多、比较快, 有些人就比较慢、比较少, 因此答案为D。‎ ‎8. According to the passage, which people seem to age more slowly than the others? ‎ A.Lawyers. B.Farmers. ‎ C.Clerks. D.Shop assistants. 根据第三段第二句“Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. ”可知,脑萎缩最慢的是律师。故答案为A。‎ Ⅳ. It's easy to spot signs of physical suffering, but much emotional pain can't be easily masked. 1 “We don't tend to have conversations about mental wellbeing, ” says Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, a clinic psychologist. Simply asking someone “How are you” may just get “Fine, thank you”, says Van Dahlen. “It's important to be aware of what could lead to somebody needing help they're afraid to ask for, ” she adds. The followings are four signs a friend might need help. ‎ ‎ 2 ‎ If you sense something different about the way your friend is acting—maybe he's not smiling much these days, for instance—trust your feelings and reach out. “Try saying, ‘I see these things. I care about you. Can I be of help? ’”, Van Dahlen says. ‎ He's unusually unhappy or annoyed. ‎ ‎ 3 “It may take more than one time to follow up if you're talking to someone ‎ 7‎ who is upset, ” Van Dahlen says, “but if a friend responds with anger, that could mean you're onto something. ” ‎ He's less put together than usual. ‎ Drinking more and ignoring personal hygiene (卫生) can be signs that someone is in trouble. Don't consider these behaviors are nothing. 4 He seems overwhelmed (压倒) by life. ‎ No one is happy all the time, but if your once optimistic friend can't find anything to be hopeful about, he may be having thoughts of worthlessness, sadness and something negative. “ 5 ” says Van Dahlen, “so that more people can get the help they need. ” ‎ A.He's acting a bit more withdrawn. ‎ B.He doesn't seem like himself lately. ‎ C.Instead, treat them as a sign to care for your friend. ‎ D.Getting angry quickly and easily can be a sign that something is wrong. ‎ E.It's a constant effort to bring into the open discussions about mental health. ‎ F.Many people avoid talking about it no matter how close they are to someone. ‎ G.We want people to get comfortable being more open and discussing mental health. ‎ ‎1.解析:选F 根据本空后的“‘We don't tend to have conversations about mental wellbeing’”可知, 无论人们跟某人有多亲密, 他们都不会跟对方谈论心理方面的问题。 ‎ ‎2.解析:选B 根据下文中“something different about the way your friend is acting”可知,朋友跟平常不一样是他心理出现问题的迹象之一,也就是说,朋友表现的不像他自己,与B项语意相符,故选B。‎ ‎3.解析:选D 根据本段的小标题“He's unusually unhappy or annoyed. ”可知,易怒是 (心理) 出问题的一个迹象。故选D。‎ ‎4.解析:选C 根据本空前的“Don't consider these behaviors are nothing. ”可知, 不要把这些不同寻常的行为不当一回事,而是要把它们当成你去关爱朋友的迹象。C项中的them指代上一句中的 behaviors。故选C。‎ ‎5.解析:选G 根据本空后的“‘so that more people can get the help they 7‎ ‎ need’”可推测, Van Dahlen希望人们能更自在地敞开心扉谈论心理健康,只有这样, 更多的人才能得到他们需要的帮助。故选G。‎ 7‎
