Here are four top choices for the community to have a try. Hilltop Pub&Grill Hilltop Pub&Grill first opened in the 1980s and took the Stevens Point community by storm with its delicious food and unique decoration style. Its fried fish are beloved due to the use of “high-quality North Atlantic fish, with a light beer batter (面糊)”. The Final Score Bar&Grill The Final Score Bar&Grill aimed to become a local hot spot in 2001 when Jim Billings, the owner, took charge of the business. Billings feels that their five batter choices set them apart from their neighboring bars. Besides, various wines are available. Point After Pub&Grill Point After Pub&Grill started serving delicious food and cold beers in a welcoming environment in 2009. But its history runs much longer. “Before it was Point After Pub&Grill, it had been Northside Bar for 30 plus years,” explained Molski, the owner. Molski feels that the pub’s four special batter choices and other fish specials are what help make it an area landmark. Two Harps Pub This Irish pub opened its doors to the public in 2017 and has been drawing fans and locals ever since. “I had done my career for a long time and was kind of bored with it,” said Nick Moore, the owner. “And this opportunity fell into my lap, so I went with it. It really made sense to open up an Irish bar.” The growing pub advises guests to try a cold beer with their Friday fried fish. 1. What makes Hilltop Pub&Grill popular with customers? A. The convenient location. B. The special food. C. The high-quality service. D. The unique wine. 2. What do The Final Score Bar&Grill and Point After Pub&Grill have in common? A. What is special about Two Harps Pub? A. It is the newest among the four pubs. B. It offers free cold beers to customers. C. It only provides fried fish on Fridays. D. It has a unique decoration style. 1. B 2. C 3. If you plan to head to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one. I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I had to complete — forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless. Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful. Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to explore, and cafes to sit in. Read books about Paris. Talk to locals and other foreigners living there. But the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student. After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to enjoy the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying bon jour to the passers-by. On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, " Bonjour Monsieur," as I passed the little store down the street. I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris. 4. What does the underlined word "ecstasy" in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Courage. B. Happiness. C. Imagination. D. Reputation. 5. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. A traveling experience. B. An exchange program C. Charming neighborhoods. D. An exchange student's life. 6. Beyond reading books, which experience would the author treasure most? A. Hanging around in Paris. B. Buying vegetables in the market C. Enjoying coffee in his spare time. D. Greeting people in French in the street. 7. According to the passage, what left the author the deepest impression? A. The presentations he did in class. B. The friendly people he met in Paris. C. The special culture he experienced in the city. D. The academic achievement he made in his study. B 5. D 6. A 7. 根据作者对在巴黎街上漫步的喜爱及第四段中的“The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.(观看的人群,城市的声音,季节变换的颜色,都增加了我作为交 换学生在巴黎体验的 ecstasy)”可知,人们的注视,城市的声音,季节变化时的色彩,都增 加了作者作为交换生体验巴黎的喜悦。 A. Courage.勇气;B. Happiness.幸福;C. Imagination.想象力;D. Reputation. 根据第一段中“But my experience was a romantic one.(但我的经历很浪漫)”和 第二段中“I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program.(我通过一个交换项目来到了 巴黎)”可知,作者作为一名交换生来到巴黎,他认为自己的巴黎之行非常浪漫。 根据第四段中“the one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot.(有一件事是读书或与人交谈所 做不到的,那就是让你有徒步漫游巴黎的体验)”可知,读书以及和人交谈无法提供步行在 巴黎闲逛带给你的体验。 故选 A。 根据最后一段中“On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, " Bonjour Monsieur," as I passed the little store down the street. I guess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.(在巴黎的最后一天,当我经过沿街的小商店时,我自信地说: “Bonjour Monsieur”在。我猜在巴黎交流最棒的部分就是用你自己的方式爱上这个城市。这 样的经历对我来说是独一无二的,是我自己对巴黎的感受)”由此判断出,给作者留下最深 的印象是他在巴黎体验到了不同的风土人情,不同的文化。故选 C。 C US author Henry Rollins once wrote: “Loneliness adds beauty to life. It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better.” Indeed, in the eyes of artists, loneliness never seems to go out of style. There are paintings that portray loneliness, songs that are inspired by loneliness, and many works of literature that center around this theme. In the eyes of UK economist Rachel Reeves, however, loneliness is far from romantic (浪漫 的). Instead, it’s a “giant evil” that’s become a serious problem in the country. So just how serious is it? On Jan 17, UK Prime Minister Theresa May appointed politician Tracey Crouch as the country’s very first “Minister for Loneliness”. Her job is to tackle (处理) the loneliness that the country’s been feeling – a problem which, according to UK government research, is affecting more than 9 million people in the country, and is more harmful to one’s physical and mental health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. And the problem hasn’t just appeared recently. Back in 2014, the UK was given the title of the “loneliness capital of Europe” by The Telegraph. A survey carried out by the newspaper found that British people were less likely to get to know their neighbors or build strong relationships with people than those from other European countries. “There is something British about wanting to deal with problems yourself,” Christian Guy, director of the Centre for Social Justice think-tank (智囊团), told The Telegraph. But this doesn’t mean that the problem only affects Britons. In fact, we’re all suffering from loneliness now more than ever, in spite of most of the world now having access to the internet, which has enabled us to be more connected than ever. What we need, according to Kim Leadbetter, sister of the late UK politician Jo Cox, is to have “proper human connections”. “Our lives nowadays are so busy. We spend the vast majority of our time on our phones, on our laptops. We need to press pause on that and actually sit down and speak to human beings,” Leadbetter said at an event last year. But the first steps toward fighting this problem are to accept its existence and not be ashamed or intimidated (吓倒) by it. After all, without loneliness, many beautiful paintings, songs, and literary works wouldn’t even exist. And “evil” or not, being lonely is simply part of the experience of being human. 8. What can we learn about the UK’s loneliness problem? A. The UK became the loneliest country in the world in 2014. B. More than half of British people suffer from loneliness. C. The government is working to solve the problem. D. British people communicate less with their neighbors than ever. 9. According to the text, social loneliness _______. A. has become a problem worldwide B. didn’t attract the public’s attention until recently C. is mainly caused by the wide use of the internet D. does more harm mentally than physically 10. What does Leadbetter suggest doing to cope with loneliness? A. Making more phone calls to our friends. B. Stopping the use of electronic products. C. Interacting with the people around us face to face more often. D. Accepting its existence calmly. 11. Which of the following would the author probably agree with? A. Loneliness is a giant evil of society. B. Only artists can appreciate the beauty of loneliness. C. It is hard to find a solution to social loneliness. D. Loneliness is just a normal part of our life. C 9. A 10. C 11. On Jan17,UK Prime Minister Theresa May appointed politician Tracey Crouch as the country's very first "Minister for Loneliness". Her job is to address the loneliness that the country's been feeling(1 月 17 日,英国首相特雷莎·梅任命政治家特雷 西·克劳奇为英国第一位孤独部长,她的工作是解决英国一直感到的孤独感)可知,英国政 府正在着手解决这一问题;故选 C。 But this doesn't mean that the problem only affects Britons. In fact, we're all suffering from loneliness now more than ever, in spite of most of the world now having access to the internet, which has enabled us to be more connected than ever (但这并不意味着只 有英国人深受这个问题的影响,事实上,尽管现在世界上大多数人都能上网,这使我们比以 往任何时候联系更加紧密,但人人都在遭受前所未有的孤独),由此可知,社交孤独已经成 为世界性的问题,A项符合题意,故选 A。 We spend the vast majority of our time on our phones, on our laptops. We need to press pause on that and actually sit down and speak to human beings(我们大 部分时间都花在手机、笔记本电脑上. But the first steps toward fighting this problem are to accept its existence and not be ashamed or intimidated by it. After all, without loneliness, many beautiful paintings songs, and literary works wouldn't even exist. And evil or not, being lonely is simply part of the experience of being simply part of the experience of being human(但解决这个问题的 第一步是接受它的存在,而不是感到羞愧或被吓倒。 D。 D Do you think alien beings exist somewhere in the universe? It seems like Mars, our closest neighbor, has inspired the most science fiction as the place where aliens are most likely to come from. Recent Mars probes (探测) have shown us that there is no life on that planet—at least not now. But that does not mean that life does not exist elsewhere—after all, the universe is really big. A lot of scientific research is going on in the search for “extraterrestrial life”. Think about it—why should the seven billion people on this little planet be the only living beings in the universe? It would, in fact, seem logical that this is not the case. So scientific research in this matter is based around the idea of finding other planets that have environments that can support life —environments similar to the Earth. The search is on for the evidence of the existence, or earlier existence of life: from very wise beings to simple organisms (有机物). So far, there have been a number of theories as to which planetary bodies may have an atmosphere that can support such life and therefore deserve closer attention. As for places within our own Milky Way Galaxy, it has been assumed over the decades that Mars and Venus, as well as some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, may have been hosts for life. Now, as technologies have improved and we can obtain measurements of the composition of the atmosphere on extra-solar planets, the chances of finding “alien” life forms are increasing. There has been a theory that some of the planets in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star Gliese 581 may be able to support life. In 2007, scientists discovered exoplanet Gliese 581c—and felt that its atmosphere was most suitable for supporting life. But further research revealed that it would not. Now, attention has been turned to Gliese 581d, at the outer edge of the star’s habitable zone. The main standards for deciding whether a planetary body can be life-supporting are atmospheric conditions which allow the existence of water. Gliese 581 is about 20. 4 light years away from the Earth, so even if life does exist there, the distance would mean that communication would be unlikely. Having said this—who says alien life forms (if they exist) need water? 12. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Life existing outside of the Earth. B. The evidence of the existence of life. C. Other faraway planets in the universe. D. Creatures known from science fictions. 13. What makes it possible for people to find “alien beings”? A. Modern scientific theories. B. Atmospheric conditions. C. Environments similar to the Earth. D. Advanced technologies. 14. From the passage, we know that _________. A. the atmosphere of Gliese 581c was most suitable for life B. it is not certain whether alien life forms need water or not C. the 7 billion people on the Earth are the only beings in the universe D. the distance of 20. 4 light years makes it impossible to find life on Gliese 581d 15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Do Aliens Exist? B. Is Mars Suitable for Life? C. Are Alien Life Forms Various? D. Can We Communicate with Aliens? A 13. D 14. B 15. 在第一段中提到“Recent Mars probes (探测) have shown us that there is no life on that planet—at least not now. But that does not mean that life does not exist elsewhere(尽管火星 探测器显示火星上没有生命,至少现在没有,但这并不意味着其他地方没有生命的存在。)” 故选 A项。 根据第三段中“as technologies have improved and we can obtain measurements of the composition of the atmosphere on extra-solar planets, the chances of finding “alien” life forms are increasing.(随着科技的进步,我们可以测量太阳系外行星的大气成分,那么发现“外星” 生命形式的可能性正在增加。)” 根据文章最后一段中“Having said this—who says alien life forms (if they exist) need water?(话虽如此,谁说外星生物(如果它们存在的话)需要水?)” 文章首句提出问题“Do you think alien beings exist somewhere in the universe?”;文章第三段首句提到“there have been a number of theories as to which planetary bodies may have an atmosphere that can support such life.(关于哪些行星体可能有能够支持生 命的大气,已经有了许多理论。)”,第四段首句提到“There has been a theory that some of the planets in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star Gliese 581 may be able to support life.(有一种 理论认为,红矮星 Gliese 581的宜居带中的一些行星可能适合生命存在。)” 故 选 A项。 Road Trip Planning There are so many things to consider when planning a road trip, especially if you want to make it a great one.
