Tani was placed first in the tournament for kindergarten through third grade- an outstanding win for anyone. “It's unheard of for any kid, let alone one in a homeless shelter," said Russell Makofsky, who is in charge of the chess program.‎ ‎ Tani hasn't had an easy life. His family left northern Nigeria in 2017, and moved to New York City over a year ago where the boy learned how to play chess at school. School chess coach Shawn Martinez saw Tani’s potential after observing him stand out in the game a few weeks after he first learned it early last year. He reached out to Tani’s family about joining in the school's chess program, and learned they were unable to pay costs associated with membership. Martinez decided to abandon Tani’s fees, which can easily reach thousands with travel and chess camp admission.‎ ‎ Seven victories later, the elementary school boy is one of the top players in the country for his age group. “He works very hard at his game,” Martinez said, believing Tani could achieve master status in the next year or two. The world's youngest grand master qualified at the age of 12.‎ ‎ As Tani’s story hits the headlines, more people want to help. Makofsky, who set up a GoFundMe campaign for Tani, said the family has received offers for a car, legal services, jobs and even housing. “My hope is that he’ll be in a home tonight,” Makofsky said.‎ ‎4. A Homeless Nigerian Won the State Chess Championship C A team of engineers at Harvard‎ ‎University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech integrated systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.‎ ‎“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components (元件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. A few years ago, his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components. “The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.‎ They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.‎ While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source, so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.‎ Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”‎ ‎·10·‎ 8. Which of the following statements was the difficulty engineers met while making the robotic fly?‎ A. They did no have sufficient fund B. There was no model in their mind.‎ C. No ready-made components were available. ‎ D. I was hard for them to assemble the components.‎ ‎9. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4?‎ A. The robotic fly can just fly in limited areas at present.‎ B. The robotic fly has been put into wide application.‎ C. The robotic fly consists of a fight device and a control system.‎ D. Information from many sources can be collected by the robotic fly.‎ ‎10. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 5 refer to?‎ ‎ A. the animals B. flight mechanics and insect-scale ‎ C. these robots D. the power, sensing and technologies ‎11. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?‎ A. Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.‎ B. Wood's design can replace animals in some experiments.‎ C. The robotic flyer is designed to learn about insects.‎ D. There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.‎ D In a major medical breakthrough, Tel Aviv University researchers printed “the world’s first 3D vascularized (血管化的) engineered heart using a patient’s own cells and biological materials. Their findings were published on April 15 in a study in Advanced Science.‎ ‎“This is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart,” says Prof. Tal Dvir of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, who led the research for the study. “This heart is made from human cells and patient-specific biological materials. In our process, these materials serve as the bioinks, something made of sugars and proteins that can be used for 3D printing of complex tissue models,” Prof. Dvir says. “People managed to 3D-print the structure of a heart in the past, but not with cells or with blood vessels. Our results demonstrate the potential of our approach for engineering personalized tissue and organ replacement in the future. ‎ According to Prof. Dvir, the use of “native” patient-specific materials is important to successfully engineering tissues and organs.‎ ‎·10·‎ The researchers are now planning on culturing the printed hearts in the lab and “teaching them to behave” like hearts , Prof. Dvir says. They then plan to transplant the 3D-printed heart into animal models.‎ ‎“We need to develop the printed heart further,” he concludes. “The cells need to form a pumping ability; they can currently contract, but we need them to work together. Our hope is that we will succeed and prove our method's efficacy(功效) and usefulness. Maybe, in ten years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world, and these procedures will be conducted routinely.”‎ ‎12. What does Prof. Dvir think of an early 3D-printed heart?‎ A. It was too simple. B. It was highly practical. ‎ C. It was too expensive. D. It was personalized. ‎ ‎13. What do we know about the latest 3D-printed heart?‎ A. It can match a patient perfectly. B. It can be cultured in the lab. ‎ C. It has been transplanted into animals. D. It has been widely used in hospitals.‎ ‎14. What is Prof. Dvir's attitude to the development of the printed heart?‎ A. Ambiguous. B. Disapproving. C. Cautious. D. Positive ‎15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?‎ A. To introduce a breakthrough of medical research.‎ B. To explain the basic principle of 3D technology.‎ C. To doubt the medical value of a new invention.‎ D. To prove the effectiveness of the new technology. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎“The calm before the storm” is a very familiar expression. It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument. 16 They noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become calm and the winds would drop.‎ But why is it often so calm before a storm? 17 According to US website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and damp air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “fuel for the storm , like petrol in a car” .‎ Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. 18 So once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm.‎ ‎·10·‎ ‎ 19 First count how many seconds there are between flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. A good judgement is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.‎ However, due to the complexity of the storm system, calm doesn't always go first. So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. 20 ‎ A. Science has given us the answer.‎ B. There is no definite answer to the question.‎ ‎ C. Weather reports sometimes cannot be trusted.‎ D. British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s.‎ E. As the air declines, it becomes warm and dry, which is stable.‎ F. The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is.‎ G. That's the most reliable way to predict the next display of nature’s temper.‎ 第三部分语言知识运用(共两节,满分55分)‎ 第一节(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ Two years ago, my friend and I were at college. With his birthday quickly ___21___ , he came to me with an unusual ___22___ : instead of receiving presents, he wanted to do some acts of kindness.‎ I was ___23___ with such all idea. ___24___ instead of taking for the birthday was really different.I asked him how he could come up with such a ___25___ idea.
