His attitude didn’t soften as I grew into adulthood and went to college. I had to ride the bus whenever I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home, Dad never met me, even in severe weather. If I grumbled, he’d say in his loudest father-voice, “That’s what your legs are for!” The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valued that my father didn’t seem concerned about my safety. But that feeling was canceled one spring evening. It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached the stop, I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home. A row of hedge(树篱) edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge, moving toward the house. Upon closer observation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hard against the tears. He did care, after all. On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair. “So! My son, it’s you!” he’d say, his face lengthening into pretended surprise. I replied, “Yes, Dad, it’s me. I’m home.” 1. What does the underlined word “grumbled” in Paragraph 1 probably mean . A. Upon closer observation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely,可知作者的爸爸实 际上是暗中地在一旁保护他,由他从车站一直到家里的那一段路都是一路地陪伴,故 A 选 项正确。 4. DCAA B The famous director of a big and expensive movie planned to film a beautiful sunset over the ocean, so that the audiences could see his hero and heroine in front of it at the end of the film as they said goodbye to each other forever. He sent his camera crew out one evening to film the sunset for him. The next morning he said to the men, “Have you provided me with that sunset?” “No, sir, ” the men answered. The director was angry. “Why not?” he asked. “Well, sir, ” one of the men answered, “we’re on the east coast here, and the sun sets in the west. We can get you a sunrise over the sea, if necessary, but not a sunset.” “But I want a sunset!” the director shouted. “Go to the airport, take the next flight to the west coast, and get one.” But then a young secretary had an idea. “Why don’t you photograph a sunrise, ” she suggested, “and then play it backwards? Then it’ll look like a sunset.” “That’s a very good idea!” the director said. Then he turned to the camera crew and said, “Tomorrow morning I want you to get me a beautiful sunrise over the sea.” The camera crew went out early the next morning and filmed a bright sunrise over the beach in the middle of a beautiful bay. Then at nine o’clock they took it to the director. “Here it is, sir, ” they said, and gave it to him. He was very pleased. They all went into the studio. “All right, ” the director explained, “now our hero and heroine are going to say goodbye. Run the film backwards so that we can see the ‘sunset’ behind them.” The “sunset” began, but after a quarter of a minute, the director suddenly put his face in his hands and shouted to the camera crew to stop. The birds in the film were flying backwards, and the waves on the sea were going away from the beach. 5. One evening, the director sent his camera crew out ________. The director wanted to film a sunset over the ocean because ________. A. it went well with the separation of the hero and heroine B. when they arrived at the beach it was already in the evening C. it was more moving than a sunrise D. the ocean looked more beautiful at sunset 8. After the “sunset” began, the director suddenly put his face in his hands ________. We can get you a sunrise over the sea, if necessary, but not a sunset.” 根据文章的最后一句“The birds in the film were flying backwards, and the waves on the sea were going away from the beach”,可知选 C。 答案:ABAC C Patients and doctors alike have long believed in the healing (治疗) power of humor. It is claimed that humor not only affects patients’ moods, but can actually help them recover faster. Several studies seem to support this. Patients in better spirits are known to have higher immune cell counts. Some have even claimed to have healed themselves of serious illnesses by reading comics and watching comedies. Despite all this, many researchers are not convinced. They point out the fact that many sufferings have been known to disappear naturally, with or without a daily dose of laughter. They also say that while optimism in general does seem to be related to better health, it is hard to tell which comes first. Humor in times of stress, however, clearly makes us feel better. On one level, it takes our minds off our troubles and relaxes us. On another, it releases powerful endorphins, a chemical produced by your body that reduces pain. There are cases where the appreciation of a good joke is indeed directly related to a person’s health. It can show, for example, whether a person has suffered damage to one particular area of the brain: the right frontal lobe(额叶). Scientists confirmed this by having people read jokes and asking them to choose the funniest endings from a list. Subjects with normal brains usually chose endings that were based on a relatively complex synthesis(综合) of ideas. Subjects with specifically located brain damage, however, responded only to slapstick(闹剧) endings, which did not depend on a particular context. When pressed, the brain-damaged subjects saw the logic in the correct endings. They simply did not find them funny. Of course, humor is largely an individual matter. Next time your friend does not get one of your jokes, there is no need to accuse him of being a lamebrain. However, you might suggest that he lighten up—for the health of it. 9. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. all researchers have agreed on the healing power of humor B. people seldom accuse their friends of not understanding jokes C. the author holds a positive attitude to the healing power of humor D. reading comics will surely become a popular way of treating diseases 10. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Many researchers are not convinced of the healing power of humor. B. Patients in bad moods are known to have higher immune cell counts. C. Optimism in general does seem to be related to better health. D. People should try their best to cheer up for their good health. 11. Scientists had some people read jokes and asked them to choose the funniest endings from a list to confirm that ________. A. the brain-damaged people are different from those with normal brains B. a person with a normal brain usually responds to slapstick endings C. a person suffering certain brain damage doesn’t appreciate a good joke D. humor takes our minds off our troubles by releasing powerful endorphins 12. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Which comes first, humor or health? B. Humor can cure different illnesses C. People need humor in times of stress D. Humor contributes to good health 解析:9. 推理判断。根据文章最后一段中的最后两句 Next time your friend does not get one of your jokes, there is no need to accuse him of being a lamebrain. However, you might suggest that he lighten up—for the health of it, 可知作者认为幽默感在生活中是起到了积极的作用, 故本题应选 C。 10. 细节理解。根据文章第二段中的 Patients in better spirits are known to have higher immune cell counts,可知 B 选项的意思与之一致,故选 B。 11. 推理判断。根据文章中第五段的第一句可知本题选 C。 12. 标题判断。根据全文的内容,不难看出文章主要讲述的是幽默感在生活中所起的某些积 极的作用,故选 D。 答案:CBCD D Educating girls quite possibly gets a higher rate of return than any other deal available in the developing world. Women’s education may be unusual field for economists, but increasing women’s contribution to development is actually as much an economic as a social project. And economics, with its emphasis on incentives(激励), provides an explanation for why so many girls lose the chance of an education. Parents in low-income countries don’t send their daughters to school because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the family; girls grow up only to marry into somebody else’s family and bear children. Girls are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to school---the prophecy(预言) becomes self-fulfilling, trapping women in a vicious circle(恶性循环) of abandonment. An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces an entirely different set of choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. The vicious circle is thus transformed into a virtuous circle(良性循环). Few will not agree with the idea that educating women has great social benefits. But it has enormous economic advantages as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 per cent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of other available deal, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has a significant impact on health practices, including family planning. 13. The author argues that educating girls in developing countries is _________. A. expensive B. troublesome C. rewarding D. labor-saving 14. What does the author say about women’s education? A. It deserves greater attention than other social project. B. It is in the first place in many developing countries. C. It will get greater returns than other known deal. D. It has developed the interest of a growing number of economists. 15. The passage mainly discusses __________. A. unequal treatment of boys and girls in developing countries B. the major contributions of educated women to society C. the potential earning power of well-educated women D. the economic and social benefits of educating women 解析:13. 细节理解。根据文章第一段的中的 Educating girls quite possibly gets a higher rate of return than any other deal available in the developing world 以及最后一段的第二句 But it has enormous economic advantages as well,可知 C 选项正确。 14. 推理判断。根据文章中最后一段的第一句 Few will not agree with the idea that educating women has great social benefits,可知 C 选项的意思与之相符。 15. 主旨大意。纵观全文,文章主要是讲现代社会女性的教育的好处,故选 D 正确。 答案:CCD 二、完形填空(共 1 小题) When 24-year-old Hannah Brencher moved to New York after college, she was hit by loneliness. Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, powerlines and wi-fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumors. For example, Camilla Rees, 48, a former investment banker in the US, moved out of her apartment in San Francisco because of the radiation coming from next door. Rees told the Los Angeles Times that when her neighbors moved in and installed a wi-fi router she lost her ability to think clearly. “I would wake up dizzy in the morning. I’d fall to the floor. I had to leave to escape that nightmare, ” she said. Since then, she’s been on a campaign against low-level electromagnetic fields, or EMFs(低频电磁场). And she’s not alone. Millions of people say they suffer from headaches, depression, nausea and rashes when they’re too close to cellphones or other sources of EMFs. Although the World Health Organization has officially declared that EMFs seem to pose little threat, governments are still concerned. In fact, last April, the European Parliament called for countries to take steps to reduce exposure to EMFs. The city of San Francisco and the state of Maine are currently considering requiring cancer-warning labels on cellphones. If these fears are reasonable, then perhaps we should all be worried about the amount of time we spend talking on our phones or plugging into wi-fi hotpots. Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the University at Albany, in New York, thinks there’s a greater than 95% chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia. Also there’s a greater than 90% chance that cellphones can cause brain tumors. But others believe these concerns are unreasonable paranoia(猜疑). Dr. Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones, ” said Linet. “We don’t have the evidence that there’s much danger.” Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs and illness — so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group. According to Robert Park, a professor of physics at the University of Maryland in the US, the magnetic waves aren’t nearly powerful enough to break apart DNA, which is now known threats, such as UV rays and X-rays, cause cancer. Perhaps it’s just psychological. Some experts find that the electro-sensitivity syndrome seems to be similar to chemical sensitivity syndrome, which is a condition that’s considered to be psychological. Whether EMFs are harmful or not, a break in the countryside, without the cellphone, would probably be good for all of us. Title: Could cellphones give you cancer? The leader of the school said the idea of a stress wall started when footprints were found on some newly painted walls and some school windows were broken. “These things happen because some students feel lots of pressure from their studies or because they don’t get along well with other students. When under stress, the body gets ready to either run or fight and becomes very nervous. Hitting the wall can help relax the body and take away stress, ” he said. “Tests and homework make me sad, ” said a junior girl, “I can’t wait to hit the wall. Nowadays, students are under great pressure, mainly coming from their school work as well as peer relationship. As far as I am concerned, building a stress wall is not appropriate. For one thing, even if students punch the wall heavily, the true stress in the bottom of their hearts can not be let out. For another, this may lead to the results of solving a problem with violence of fixing a bad temper, which has bad effects on their health growth. In order to decrease our stress, here are my suggestions. To begin with, we can design more outdoor activities for students to get rid of the stress. What’s more, it is strongly suggested that we can take part in some sports events, which can surely help students out of stress and improve their health at the same time. All in all, only when we let out the stress properly can we live a happy school life.查看更多
