(16) ‎ M: So, how did you think of the idea for this book?‎ W: About four years ago, I was taking my dog for a walk when I saw a very beautiful bird. I started thinking about birds and decided to read about them at the library. I became very interested in birds, and that’s how I decided to create the main character in my book. He is a scientist who studies birds. (14)‎ M: How long did it take you to write the book?‎ W: I wrote the book in about two years. (15) Then, my editor worked on the book for about a year.‎ ‎ I only spent three months thinking of the story, but it took much longer to write it!‎ M: Do you ever worry you won’t be able to think of another idea for a book?‎ W: All the time! But I always think of more ideas as soon as I finish with the book I’m writing. ‎ Text 10 ‎ Solvang is the “Danish Village” in California, north of Los Angeles, south of San Francisco, and west of Las Vegas. (17) It is considered the Danish Capital of America. Located within the Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang offers a rich artistic and cultural experience. It all started back in 1911, when Danish-Americans from the American Midwest settled in California. (18) They named their settlement Solvang, which means “sunny field” in Danish. It’s possible to get a picture of those days at the Solvang Museum of History & Art and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, named for the world famous Danish author of children’s stories. (19) There is a version of Copenhagen’s famous 17th century Round Tower and a Little Mermaid fountain. Walking down the streets, you can make stops into Danish bakeries, do some wine tasting at nearby wine bars, and shop at art galleries. In 2009, the First Lady chose Solvang as a national “Preserve America Community”. Bit O’ Denmark is the oldest restaurant in Solvang, a nice find if you have a strong desire for a large meal of sandwiches and smoked fish.
