Few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal—the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the age leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regrets. The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrances of the two roads. One leading to a peaceful, sunny place covered with flowers and fruits; the other leading to a deep dark cave which was endless. He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, “Oh youth, return! Oh, my father, place me once more at the entrance to life.” But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away. He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness, and these were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappear, and this was the symbol of himself. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were then honored and happy on that New Year’s night. The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way with shame and grief. He dared no longer to look towards the heaven where his parents lived. He burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days!” And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream on New Year’s night. He was still young though his faults were real. He had not yet entered the deep dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land. 24. Two Roads to Take C When photographer Simon Czapp took pictures of a curious five-month-old fox, he soon realized this little fox was attracted by his subject. The clever fox was so curious about the camera equipment that she climbed on top of it. And while she was supposed to be the subject of the shoot, the fox stood on the shutter release button (快门按钮) and took her own frames. Mr. Czapp visited the New Forest Wildlife Park to capture images of new arrival Jessie. Jessie is a lovely little fox. She has been at the animal park in Ashurst, Hampshire—home to wolves, deer and others in 25 acres of ancient woodland after being abandoned by her mother. Mr. Czapp said, “Jessie was very playful and curious and not shy at all in front of the camera. Soon after I arrived she was chewing my shoes and everything seemed to be a game to her. Then she started exploring the camera I had set up on a tripod (三脚架). She stood on her back legs to look at the back of the camera. She balanced her front paws on it and at one point knocked it over. ” He put the camera back on the tripod and Jessie soon jumped back up. At one point she had all four paws on the camera and was keeping her balance. Mr. Czapp added, “She jumped up there several times and I realized it could make a good picture. As I was leaving away with the public’s viewing window (取景窗) behind me, I thought I heard the camera go off but didn’t think much of it. However, when I checked the memory card afterwards, I was amazed to see Jessie had actually taken two frames of me photographing her. I couldn’t believe I had been outfoxed (智取) by a fox! There were some lovely photos of her but she obviously thought the photographer was worthy of a picture too! ” 28. The underlined word “frames” in Para. 1 refers to . A. Photographers. B. subjects. However, a new study has suggested that parents lie to their children more often than we think. “We are surprised by how often parenting by lying occurs to our children,” said researcher Kang Lee of the University of Toronto, Canada. “Our findings showed that even the parents who attached much importance to honesty with their children got involved in it.” Researchers ran two studies in which parents and students commented on nine situations where a parent lied to a child to either shape behaviour or make it happy. For instance, a parent is embarrassed by a child's crying and says, “The police will come to make sure that you behave if you don't stop crying now.” To control the emotion of the child, the parent told the child, “a favorite uncle has just died and become a star to watch over you.” The researchers tested about 130 parents, mostly moms, asking whether they had told similar lies. More than 70 percent said they taught their children that lying is unacceptable. Even so, nearly 80 percent of the parents admitted they had told at least one similar lie. Researcher Heyman suggested the reasons can be benefiting the parents themselves or protecting the child from scary issues, such as lying about a murder in the news. “Children sometimes behave in ways that are likely to harm their long-term interests,” said Heyman. “It is common for parents to try out a number of strategies, including lying. When parents are dealing with the demands of getting through the day, concerns about possible long-term negative influences on children's beliefs about honesty are not necessarily at the front position.” 32. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. Many parents get used to teaching children by lying. B. Most parents don't lie to their children. C. Honesty is no longer important in educating children. D. There's no doubt that children often lie to their parents. 33. Which of the following is NOT a reason for parenting by lying according to the text? A. Children may feel happy with the lies. B. Parents want to free themselves from trouble. C. Parents need to protect the children from bad things. D. Children sometimes don't want to know the truth. 34. According to Heyman, . A. negative effects of lying aren't paid enough attention to. B. children won't be misled about honesty by lying. C. it's unusual for parents to use lying to educate children. D. it's strange that some people worry about children's beliefs. 35.The purpose of this text is to . A. show that children learn to lie from their parents.
