But once you look at them with some perspective, you will certainly feel easy. Here is a normal boarding day.‎ Early Morning:‎ ‎ Usually boarders get up around 7:00 a.m. and have around an hour to take a shower and put on their uniform before breakfast.‎ Lessons:‎ ‎ Classes start at 9:00 a.m. and every lesson lasts for 50 minutes. After two lessons, at 10:40 a.m., you'll have a short break. The next period of classes will include two more lessons.‎ Lunch:‎ ‎ Lunch is usually held around 12:30 p.m. at the dining hall, where you'll join your friends to enjoy a hot dish. After an hour of lunch, you'll have three or four more lessons to attend.‎ Dinner:‎ ‎ At 5:00 p.m. you will have finished your school lessons for the day. Most boarding schools in the UK offer their full boarders different kinds of hot meals to choose from.‎ Activities/Sports:‎ ‎ All boarding schools in the UK provide many different kinds of activities for their boarders, such as football, swimming, golf or art.‎ ‎ Prep:‎ ‎ An important part of boarding school life is the supervised homework session known as “prep”. Although prep might sound stressful, it's a great way for you to keep up with your study.‎ Free time:‎ ‎ Once you are done with all your classes and activities, it's time to relax.‎ Bedtime:‎ ‎ In most boarding schools, the lights go out around 10:30 p.m..‎ ‎ Being nervous just before you go to a boarding school is completely normal and understandable. Hopefully, being aware of the usual routine you'll be following can help you. Once you are there, you will also see how exciting life in a boarding school in England can be.‎ ‎21.What can help you keep up with your study in the boarding school?‎ ‎ A.Doing activities.‎ - 24 -‎ ‎ B.Having lessons.‎ ‎ C.Enjoying free time.‎ ‎ D.The supervised homework session.‎ ‎ 22.What do we know about boarding schools in England from the text?‎ ‎ A.Classes usually start at 8: 30 am.‎ ‎ B.Students can have a short break after four lessons.‎ ‎ C.They don't give students any free time.‎ ‎ D.They turn off the lights around 10:30 p.m..‎ ‎23.What is the purpose of the text?‎ ‎ A.To help students know about boarders' life.‎ ‎ B.To attract more students to boarding schools.‎ ‎ C.To introduce a new school life.‎ ‎ D.To advertise for boarding schools.‎ B ‎ Daily physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. For this reason, many architects and designers are working to create buildings that encourage people to make exercise a part of their ordinary routine. The movement to promote healthy activity through architecture is called active design. It began in 1998 as part of a university public health program, and it has since gained popularity in cities around the world. Active design uses a number of techniques to encourage the occupants of a building to be more active.‎ ‎ One of the most important strategies of active design is inspiring people to make walking part of their routine. A particularly successful tool for promoting walking is the skipstop elevator. These elevators stop only on every second or third floor, leaving riders to take the stairs in order to reach their destination. Another strategy of active design is to make stairs more pleasant and inviting. Instead of creating dark stairwells that are located in isolated parts of buildings, active design uses welllit and centrally placed stairs to encourage more foot traffic. ‎ - 24 -‎ Skipstop elevators and appealing stair design are both effective tools of active design because they offer incentive and opportunity for exercise. In fact, researchers studying a building that employs both skipstop elevators and more attractive stair design said that 70 percent of building occupants reported using the stairs every day.‎ ‎ Active design encourages physical activity using not only the interior features of a building, but the relationship between a building and its surroundings as well. A building that employs active design may integrate outdoor space in order to make the environment more engaging and promote physical activity. Some elements that architects use to incorporate the exterior with the interior are glass walls, interior gardens or park spaces, and courtyards with open ceilings, all of which deemphasize the boundaries between inside and outside. These elements make the building more physically and mentally invigorating. Similarly, by increasing the number of entrances and exits to a building, architects can help keep a building's users interested in their surroundings by providing a variety of routes for them to use. If people continue to be stimulated by new sights or experiences, they are less likely to choose the quickest and easiest path to their destination and may instead choose a more physically challenging route.‎ ‎24.What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 2 mean?‎ A.Requirement. B.Encouragement.‎ C.Technique. D.Assistance.‎ ‎25.Why does the author discuss dark stairwells in Paragraph 2?‎ A.To demonstrate the differences between elevator and stairwell design.‎ ‎ B.To describe one advantage of using skipstop elevators in buildings.‎ ‎ C.To make a point about why people don't use the stairs often.‎ ‎ D.To argue that skipstop elevators may lead to design failures.‎ ‎26.Which of the following is NOT a way that architects weaken the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces?‎ ‎ A.Creating more routes for entering and exiting.‎ ‎ B.Building gardens inside the building.‎ ‎ C.Creating spaces with open ceilings.‎ ‎ D.Using seethrough materials.‎ ‎27. How does Paragraph 2 relate to Paragraph 3 in the passage?‎ A.Para 2 describes an early model of a design discussed in para 3.‎ - 24 -‎ B.Para 3 argues about the effectiveness of the technique from para 2.‎ C.Para 3 introduces a different strategy than the one discussed in para 2.‎ D.Para 2 explains a technique, and para 3 gives examples of how it is used.‎ C ‎ Up and down the economic ladder, many Americans who work — and especially those raising kids — are pressed for time, wishing they had more of it to devote to leisure activities (or even just sleeping). At the same time, research has indicated that people who are busy tend to be happier than those who are idle, whether their busyness is purposeful or not.‎ ‎ A research paper released late last year investigated this tradeoff, attempting to pinpoint (精确指出) how much leisure time is best. Its authors examined the relationship between the amount of “discretionary time” people had — basically, how much time people spend awake and doing what they want — and how pleased they were with their lives.‎ The paper, which analyzed data covering about 35,000 Americans, found that employed people's ratings of their satisfaction with life peaked when they had in the neighborhood of two and a half hours of free time a day. For people who didn't work, the best amount was four hours and 45 minutes.‎ The research traced a relationship between free time and life satisfaction, but didn't provide any final insight into what underlies that correlation — “which is exciting, because this is a work in progress,” says Cassie Mogilner Holmes, a professor at UCLA's Anderson School of Management and a coauthor of the paper, which hasn't yet been peerreviewed or published in an academic journal.‎ An experiment that the researchers arranged hinted at (暗示) a possible explanation of the correlation they found. They asked participants to picture and describe what it would be like to have a certain amount of daily free time, and then report how they'd feel about that allotment (分配). “What we find is that having too little time makes people feel stressed, and maybe that's obvious.” says Holmes. “But interestingly, that effect goes away — the role of stress goes away — once you approach the optimal point.” After that point, Holmes says, the subjects started to say they felt less productive overall, which could explain why having a lot of free time can feel like having too much free time.‎ It's not clear what an individual is to do with these findings, since the amount of free time people have usually has something to do with a variety of factors, such - 24 -‎ ‎ as having children or a degree of control over work schedules. Holmes shared her research with the MBA students in her class on happiness, and some of the most timecrunched among them were comforted by the findings:“I think that two and a half hours creates a nice goal that even if you increase a little bit more of your discretionary time use, you can expect that it will translate into greater life satisfaction.”‎ ‎28.According to the passage, what happens to Americans occupied with their work?‎ ‎ A.They allow themselves more leisure time.‎ ‎ B.They keep themselves busy on purpose.‎ ‎ C.They know how much leisure time is best.‎ ‎ D.They experience higher level of satisfaction.‎ ‎29.What can be learned about the relationship between free time and life satisfaction?‎ A.Researchers have cast light on the cause of the correlation.‎ B.Unemployed people need more leisure time to feel content.‎ C.The paper on the correlation has achieved peer recognition.‎ D.Employed people enjoy more leisure time in the neighborhood.‎ ‎30.Which of the following charts illustrates the change of stress and productivity?‎ ‎31.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________________________________________________________________________.‎ A.Holmes is optimistic about the influence of her findings B.individuals are encouraged to control their work schedules C.people with tight schedules can't benefit from the findings D.the MBA students find no free time to obtain life satisfaction D ‎ A medical study has shown that excess (过度的) coffee drinking could cause - 24 -‎ ‎ heart attacks in people who do not metabolize (使新陈代谢) caffeine fast enough.‎ ‎ The study, published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association, says an enzyme (酶) that metabolizes caffeine in the liver works differently in some people, depending on the makeup of the gene. People who have a slow version of the enzyme are at a greater risk of a heart attack when they drink more coffee. The risk had something to do with a person's age and how many cups of coffee he drinks.‎ ‎ The team from the University of Toronto in Canada studied 4,024 people living in coffeerich Costa Rica between 1994 and 2004, of whom half suffered nonfatal (非致命的) heart attacks. They found slightly more than half had the slow version of the gene, while the rest had the fast form. ‎ ‎ Two to three cups of coffee a day increased the possibilities of a heart attack by 36 percent for those with the slowacting gene and four or more cups a day lifted it by 64 percent.‎ ‎ But those under 50 who had the fast version of the gene had a lower risk of heart disease, even with four or more cups a day.‎ ‎ Those with the fastacting gene who drank two to three cups of coffee a day had 22 percent reduced possibilities of having a heart attack, but drinking four or more cups a day only lessened the risk by 1 percent. Scientists recommend limiting coffee consumption (消耗量) to within four cups a day.‎ ‎32.People who have a slow version of the enzyme ________.‎ A.are in danger when they drink coffee B.are living in coffeerich Costa Rica C.have the slow version of the gene D.cannot drink four or more cups of coffee a day ‎33.The example of Costa Rica the author presented in the passage proves that ________.‎ ‎ A.the heart attack in Costa Rica is really serious ‎ B.the heart problem has something to do with drinking coffee ‎ C.people in Costa Rica cannot metabolize caffeine in the liver ‎ D.more than half people have the slow version of gene ‎34.It can be concluded that the passage is most probably written for ________.‎ ‎ A.doctors who study heart disease - 24 -‎ ‎ B.specialists who offer medical care ‎ C.old people who have the slow version of the gene ‎ D.those who love drinking coffee every day ‎35.What is the best title for this passage?‎ ‎ A.Coffee and Heart Attacks ‎ B.Gene and Heart Disease ‎ C.Caffeine and Enzyme ‎ D.Reasons for Heart Problems 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ One of the biggest reasons people drop an exercise program is lack of interest. __36__ The good news is there are tons of different sports and activities to try to see which one inspires you.‎ When picking the right type of exercise, it can help to consider your workout personality. __37__ If so, solo sports like running, biking, or snowboarding could be for you. However, one early evening, my mother decided to do all the vegetable shopping by herself. She believed that Bharat did not wait to check the really fresh items and instead, bought randomly in a hurry. As a result, the vegetables he brought back were not fresh.‎ After getting ready, she took her favorite purse with quite an amount of money, thinking she could go to other shops too after finishing at the vegetable market. My mother asked Bharat to get a rickshaw for her and on reaching the market, she asked the rickshaw wallah (人力车车夫) to wait for her. She took a coolie and did her shopping happily, choosing some of the freshest green vegetables available there. At last, her shopping was done. She returned to the rickshaw and sat on it while the coolie put all the things my mother had bought onto the rickshaw.‎ On reaching home, Bharat took all the packets of vegetables inside and my mother quickly paid the rickshaw wallah and got off, forgetting to collect her purse from the seat of the rickshaw. The rickshaw wallah left soon after saying goodbye to my mother. All of us greeted my mother and asked her about her evening of shopping with much delight.‎ Then we began to help my mother prepare our dinner. Although prep might sound stressful, it's a great way for you to keep up with your study”可知,监督作业环节可以帮助你赶上学习进度。故选D。‎ ‎22. 根据文章第九段“In most boarding schools, the lights go out around 10:30 p.m.” 故选A。 根据画线词所在的句子“Skipstop elevators and appealing stair design are both effective tools of active design because they offer incentive and opportunity for exercise”可知,跳停电梯和吸引人的楼梯设计都是积极设计的有效工具,因为它们为锻炼提供了激励和机会。 根据第二段“Another strategy of active design is to make stairs more pleasant and inviting. Instead of creating dark stairwells that are located in isolated parts of buildings, active design uses welllit and centrally placed stairs to encourage more foot traffic”可知积极设计的另一个策略是让楼梯更舒适、更吸引人。 根据第三段“Some elements that architects use to incorporate the exterior with the interior are glass walls, interior gardens or park spaces, and courtyards with open ceilings, all of which deemphasize the boundaries between inside and outside”可知,建筑师用来将室内外结合的一些元素包括玻璃墙、室内花园或公园空间,以及带有开放式天花板的庭院,所有这些都弱化了室内外的界限。 根据第三段“Active design encourages physical activity using not only the interior features of a building, but the relationship between a building and its surroundings as well”可知,积极设计鼓励身体活动,不仅要利用建筑物的内部特征,还要利用建筑物与其周围环境之间的关系。 根据第一段中“research has indicated that people who are busy tend to be happier than those who are idle, whether their busyness is purposeful or not”可知,研究表明,忙碌的人往往比闲着的人更快乐,不管他们的忙碌是否有目的。故选D。‎ ‎29. 根据第五段“What we find is that having too little time makes people feel stressed, and maybe that's obvious.” says Holmes. “But interestingly, that effect goes away — the role of stress goes away — once you approach the optimal point.” After that point, Holmes says, the subjects started to say they felt less productive overall, which could explain why having a lot of free time can feel like having too much free time可知,时间太少会有压力,一旦你达到最佳状态,压力的作用就消失了,在那之后,受试者开始说他们总体上感觉效率较低。故选D。‎ ‎31. 故选A。 根据第二段“People who have a slow version of the enzyme are at a greater risk of a heart attack when they drink more coffee.”和第三段中“They found slightly more than half had the slow version of the gene, while the rest had the fast form.” 根据第二段中“People who have a slow version of the enzyme are at a greater risk of a heart attack when they drink more coffee. The risk had something to do with a person's age and how many cups of coffee he drinks”和第三段中“The team from the University of Toronto in Canada studied 4,024 people living in coffeerich Costa Rica between 1994 and 2004, of whom half suffered nonfatal heart attacks”可知,作者在文中给出的哥斯达黎加的例子证明了心脏问题与喝咖啡有关。故选B。‎ ‎34. 根据第一段“A medical study has shown that - 24 -‎ ‎ excess coffee drinking could cause heart attacks in people who do not metabolize caffeine fast enough”可知,这篇文章很可能是写给那些喜欢每天喝咖啡的人的。故选D。‎ ‎35. 根据第一段“A medical study has shown that excess coffee drinking could cause heart attacks in people who do not metabolize caffeine fast enough”可知,本文讲述的是咖啡和心脏病之间的关系。故选A。 下文谈的是这座城市是最好的地方之一的一个原因(reasons),文章最后一句中的“which best explains why Bothell is called the nicest city”是对此处的暗示,故选C。 ‎ ‎44.答案与解析:A 根据下文的“I have fun communicating with people here”信息可知,此处指Tinkham在免下车打包窗口与顾客交谈(chatted)。‎ ‎45. ‎ ‎51.答案与解析:B 根据下文的“she suggested that Bothell... Cup of Kindness Day。set... as...“将…… ‎ ‎54.答案与解析:B 根据本句中的“but not for the money”信息可知,这里指为他人服务(serve)但不是为了钱的人。‎ ‎55. catch on“受欢迎,流行起来,变得时髦”; put on“举办;上演;展出”; come up“发生”; go up“(价格、温度等)上涨,上升”。 ‎ ‎61.答案与解析:was/were given 考查动词时态和语态。 ‎ ‎62.答案与解析:which/that 考查定语从句。 分析本句的in the past few months可知,研究人员过去几个月都在做的事情,且test与其主语they为主谓关系,故用现在完成进行时have been testing。‎ ‎65. Dear John,‎ I'm pleased to tell you that an international marathon will take place in our city.
