Some experts say that scientific advances will one day enable humans to last tens of years beyond what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.‎ ‎“I think we are knocking at the door of immortality(永生),” said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. “I think by 2075 we will see it and that’s a conservative estimate(保守的估计).”‎ At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology(纳米技术) make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what was possible in the past. “There is a great effort so that people can live from 120 to 180 years,” he said. “Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 200 or 300 or 500 years.”‎ However, many scientists who specialize in aging are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to last past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.‎ Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. “It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life?” said Leonard Poon, director of the University‎ of ‎Georgia Gerontology Centre. “At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.”‎ ‎24.By saying “we are knocking at the door of immortality”, Michael Zey means _________.‎ A. they have got some ideas about living forever B. they believe that there is no limit of living C. they are able to make people live past the present life span D. they are sure to find the truth about long living ‎25. Donald Louria’s attitude towards long living is that ________.‎ A. the human body is designed to last past about 120 years B. it is possible for humans to live longer in the future C. it is still doubtful how long humans can live D. people can live from 120 to 180‎ ‎26. The underlined word “it” (in Paragraph 4) refers to ________.‎ A. a great effort B. the conservative estimate C. the idea of living from 200 to 300 years - 12 -‎ D. the idea of living beyond the present life span ‎27. What would be the best title for this text?‎ A. No Limit for Human Life ‎ B. Living Longer or not C. Science, Technology and Long Living ‎ D. Healthy Lifestyle and Long Living C Plastic-Eating ‎Worms Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that winds up in landfills(垃圾填埋场), and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there has been no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms.‎ Researchers in Spain and England recently found that the worms of the greater wax moth can break down polyethylene(聚乙烯), which accounts for 40% of plastics. The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethylene shopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms’ chewing alone was not responsible for the polyethylene breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste(糊状物) and applied it to plastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass--apparently broken down by enzymes(酶) from the worms’ stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology in 2017.‎ Federica Bertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worm’s ability to break down their everyday food --- beeswax--- also allows them to break down plastic. “Wax is a complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, is there as well,” she explains. “The wax worm evolved a method or system to break this bond.”‎ Jennifer DeBruyn, a microbiologist at the University‎ of ‎Tennessee, who was not involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物)?‎ Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team’s findings might one day help employ the enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process --- not simply “millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic.”‎ ‎28.What can we learn about the worms in the study?‎ A. They wind up in landfills. B. They can consume plastics.‎ C. They are newly evolved creatures. D. They take plastics as their everyday food.‎ ‎29. According to Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step of the study is to _______.‎ A. increase the breakdown speed B. confirm the research findings C. find out the source of the enzyme D. identify other means of the breakdown - 12 -‎ ‎30. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the chemical might _____.‎ A. be produced in factories in future ‎ B. be used to clean the oceans C. help make plastic bags ‎ D. help to raise worms ‎31. What is the main purpose of the passage?‎ A. To explain a study method on worms.‎ B. To present a way to break down plastics.‎ C. To introduce the diet of a special worm.‎ D. To propose new means to keep eco-balance.‎ D Volunteering Is Fun One afternoon I was sitting at home feeling so bored. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I wanted to meet people and have new experiences so I decided to start volunteering. I searched on my computer and found a website where I could volunteer on a farm in France.‎ My time working on a farm was a new experience for me. It was basically a free holiday as food and accommodation were provided. However, it was not my typical holiday as I had to look after fifteen horses and sleep at the top of a tower in a castle! I was an awful farmer but it did not matter because I made some great friends. However, you do not need to go abroad to volunteer. I have had plenty of adventures at home as volunteering can become a hobby. For example, I love singing so I had a good laugh waving my arms in an attempt to conduct my local choir. I did slowly improve and it felt great to conduct the choir in a concert. At university, I organized a concert for charity with my friends. It was really fun finding bands and raising money for a cause we believe in.‎ It is true that you feel good volunteering but there are also other advantages. I once volunteered as a server at a charity sports event where the organizers gave me cupcakes to thank me for my services. I also volunteered in a charity shop so I found loads of nice cheap clothes to update my wardrobe(衣柜).‎ While this is all fun, my favorite aspect of volunteering is creating and sharing stories. My terrible attempts at farming have given me hilarious stories to tell! Talking to volunteers from different countries and backgrounds has also helped me learn more about the world. I feel thankful to have had so much fun with many nice people thanks to volunteering.‎ ‎32. Why did the author want to be volunteer?‎ A. He wanted to taste new life and make friends.‎ B. He felt ashamed of himself.‎ C. He wanted to be a farmer.‎ D. He wanted to go abroad.‎ ‎33. The underlined word “hilarious” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “_____”.‎ - 12 -‎ A. sad B. critical C. awful D. funny ‎34. What volunteering work did the author do?‎ A. Taking care of sheep. B. Helping in an Italian farm.‎ C. Helping in a charity shop. D. Conducting a choir in a sports event.‎ ‎35.How does the author feel according to the last paragraph?‎ A. Curious. B. Anxious. C. Grateful. D. Cautious.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ You’re growing up. It is time for us to lead a low-carbon lifestyle in order to protect the earth. I think everyone should take an active part. First of all, we should walk or ride our bikes instead of taking cars or buses to save fuel and reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. Second, when shopping, we should bring our own shopping bags instead of buying plastic bags, which cause white pollution. And it’ s important for us to save electricity whenever possible. Last but not least, we should turn off the tap after we use the running water. If we can make a small change in our way of life, we can make a big difference to the earth! Dear fellow students, let’s take action right now!‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ - 12 -‎
