With the help of social media, rumors — no matter whether they are true or false — spread like wildfire, and sometimes we can’t be sure what to believe. Now, an international group of researchers might be able to make it easier for us. They are working on a lie detector that could separate online truth from lies, Discovery News reported. Named after the Greek goddess Pheme, famed for spreading bad rumors, the system is far from a traditional lie detector, which works by attaching a machine to a potential liar. Instead, Pheme analyzes the rumor directly. When a rumor comes out, on a micro blog, for example, Pheme can trace the source of information to see if it was released by reliable sources like experts or news agencies. If it wasn’t, Pheme then examines the history and background of the account to identify whether it was created just to spread rumors. After finding the source of the rumor, the system can keep a close eye on how other users react to the rumor — either confirming or denying it — to help analyze and further determine the reliability of the information. Some people might find the Pheme system unnecessary based on the idea that false rumors never survive for long and people always get to the truth over time. While that’s a fair point, there is a certain class of rumors, such as “a tiger is at large” or “an asteroid (小行星) is about to hit the Earth”, that can cause panic among people and thus lead to serious consequences. These are cases when we need to be able to check for accuracy quickly. “Our system aims to help with that, by tracking and verifying (查证) information in real time,” a leading researcher Kalina Bontcheva, at the University of Sheffield, UK, told the BBC. According to Bontcheva, Pheme is still under development and won’t be ready for another 18 months. Until then, there’s an old-fashioned technique that you can use to protect yourself from false information — ask questions, check sources and don’t believe any claim until you’ve seen the evidence. 58. What is the article mainly about? A. Tips on how to deal with rumors online. B. Factors that make rumors so easy to spread. C. A new device that can check whether online rumors are true or not. D. An introduction to some types of lie detectors. 59. How does the Pheme system determine the reliability of a piece of information? A. Based on how the majority of people react to it. B. Based on the reliability of its sources and the history of its authors. C. By collecting and examining relevant information to further confirm it. D. By making use of an “Internet bot” to track and verify the information. 60. Which of the following statements might the author agree with? A. The Pheme system is not very helpful because all rumors eventually die down. B. The Pheme system will be ready to help social networks become more accurate by the end of 2014. C. The Pheme system can identify almost all kinds of rumors on social networking sites. D. The Pheme system aims to respond to rumors quickly so as to reduce the impact of false ones. C I have been passionate about sewing and fashion design since I was 12. Two years ago, I designed and made a set of outfits from recyclable materials for a charity fashion show. Through this highly meaningful and profound experience, I became aware of the importance of protecting and preserving our environment when designing and making fashion items, resulting in my founding an organization to promote eco — friendly, design and fashion. My interest has led me to research areas of fashion that have environmental implications. For example , some popular clothing stores have announced marketing policies designed to improve the environment. For those of us who are eco - conscious, it is responsible for us to evaluate whether such policies are just a marketing promotion, or represent great efforts to protect our environment. Three chain - stores, H&M, Urban Outfitters and Forever 21 ,have been promoting "green" items. After I examined their products,! have concluded that H&M and Urban Outfitters are truly helping the environment with their efforts, while Forever 21 seems to be using the "go green" trend as a way to sell more products, rather than genuinely help the environment. Of these three stores, H&M has the most extensive eco -fashion plans. It is already well on its way to carrying out its plans by increasingly mixing organic cotton into their garments, as well as putting fully organic cotton items on the market. The store also belongs to the Organic Exchange Organization, which approves of growth of organic cotton. To reduce the harm from non - organic cotton production, H&M is involved with the Better Cotton Project. Mindful of the unfavorable effects of climate change, the store aims to minimize transportation and energy usage. H&M labels their eco -friendly products with an official symbol, the Flower, to represent a production system that is less harmful than most traditional processes. Because of these actions and policies, H&M is already well on its way to making a difference on the environment. With its Urban Renewal brand, Urban Outfitter takes a different approach than H&M in promoting eco - friendly fashion. The brand features women' s clothes made from strictly environmentally -friendly sources, such as vintage, dead stock, or surplus clothing. Urban Renewal produces fashionable garments, and embraces being eco - friendly through recycling. Unlike the other two stores above, Forever 21 ' s eco - fashion efforts fall short; some people would say their message is thoroughly misleading. It promotes the "green" image, and yet many of their supposed eco -friendly products do not help the environment. For example, it sells a "Think Green Tote" that, according to the site, is meant to "send an environmentally friendly message. " However it is made of 100% non - organic cotton which is one of the most damaging fabrics to the environment, mostly because it requires greater chemical intervention compared to organic cotton. Also, the "I Love My Planet Tote" is supposed to "make a positive statement," but is also made of 100% cotton that is not organic. The only tote that is environmentally - friendly is the "H81 Organic Cotton Tote" from Forever 21' s Heritage brand, made from 100% organic cotton. Now that Forever 21 has portrayed itself as being "green," it should start "walking the walk. " 61. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means ____. A. all the customers are trying not to walk into the Forever 21 to buy products B. the Forever 21 has already been on its way to transform its negative image C. the writer publicly urges the Forever 21 to put its campaign into practice D. the environmental problem is so serious that we should pay more attention 62. Which of the following supports the author's opinion? A. The author' s environmental awareness comes from his shopping experiences. B. None of the three stores makes a difference on the ecological protection. C. Someone uses the "go green" trend just as a trick to make more profit. D. It is still a very long way before we humans will use real green products. 63. The passage is developed by ____. A. showing cause and effect B. giving concrete figures C. making comparison and contrast D. using time order 64. Which of the following statements can be the best title? A. Does the Trend of Eco - Friendly Help the Environment? B. Green Products Are Common in Fashion Stores. C. A Survey of Eco - Friendly Design on Fashion Markets. D. Are Chain Stores in Fashion Really Going Green? D Many years ago, I went through a tough time. One afternoon, I picked my girls up. It was late when we returned home. I went to unlock the door and found my key wouldn’t go in. I kept trying while my daughter went to get a flashlight. When she returned with it we found somehow the lock had been “stuffed” with sunflower seed shells. Thinking that one of the neighborhood children had been up to no good, I really didn’t give it much consideration. I found all windows were locked up tight. So I returned to the back door. Oh my God, I will never forget the shock of that moment. The house was empty! Other than a few things remaining on the back porch, everything was gone! Then I heard a car pull into the driveway and found two policemen walking up. They inquired why I had broken into the house. They then asked me for proof that I lived at that address, so I asked them to wait a minute while I went to get my rent receipt and identification from inside the house. I explained the matter to them and showed them the door lock. At this point they were not buying any of my story. I could tell from their actions and tone of voice that they thought I was breaking into an empty house for somewhere to sleep. I asked a neighbor for the phone number of house owner and the officer made a call. The owner was quite shocked to hear my story. She said that my roommate had been going through an eviction(驱逐) process with the court when I moved in with her and had lost the case. She had been ordered to move by 10 am on that date. The court order had been issued the same day I had paid her 1/2 of the rent and a deposit of $300,000. The owner was very kind and understanding but there was nothing she could do. The house had been rented already and the people were to move in the following weekend. The officers let me go and I went to gather my girls into the car. They were both exhausted and old. Also very frightened, because they thought their mamma was going to jail. I had to pull over because the tears took control. I couldn’t believe it! Everything we owned was gone, I had used up all our money moving in and paying my “friend” our share of costs. I knew very few people in town, as we had just moved there recently. I went to sit back in the car with the girls, I talked to the girls, explaining our situation to them so that they wouldn’t be afraid. During this time there was a “street person” with a bag, looking in the garbage for cans, bottles, and anything that might bring him some cash. But I didn’t pay much attention to him. I decided to get the girls something to eat for breakfast. We grabbed some bread, and chips and returned for a “picnic”. When we got there, I noticed that the man was not alone. He was with a small group of others like him and they were passing a hat among themselves. I was busy setting up our little “picnic” when I heard a voice saying, “Mama, please excuse… but…well…I overheard the situation you are in, and well… I and the fellows took up a collection for you and your little girls. It’s not very much, but maybe it’ll help a little.” I looked up at this man---dirty, needing a shave ----and saw the face of an angel. I started crying. The man tried to hand me $30. I folded his hand back over the money and just hugged him as tight as I could. I told him, “Thank you for your more than generous offer, but we are going to be just fine.” He didn’t believe me at first, but I convinced him that it was okay. Later that afternoon I went to the market and bought the making for a barbecue and off to that little park. It didn’t take us very long to find those gentlemen and invite them to join us for lunch. I had a wonderful afternoon that day, sitting there with those old guys, singing songs. They had some of the most entertaining stories and they shared the dreams they once had. They shared themselves… from the heart. 65. The writer couldn’t open the door because ________ A. she didn’t have the right key B. the owner of the house refused her living there C. someone had changed the lock D. there was something else in the lock 66. How did the writer come into the house? A. She came in with the help of the policemen. B. She came in with the help of a flashlight. C. She came in by breaking the glass. D. She came in from the back door. 67. When the writer came into her house, she must feel _____ A. excited B. shocked C. confused D. frustrated 68. The writer was not allowed to stay at the house because ____. A. she was cheated by her roommate and the house had been rented to others B. the house owner was angry about her breaking the glass of the house C. she hadn’t paid her share of rent D. she was ordered to move out by the court 69. A. the policemen didn’t have enough money B. the policemen helped the writer to break the window C. the policemen didn’t believe the writer’s words D. the policemen wanted to get the rent receipt 70. As we can see in the picture, Xiaoming is busy with his homework while his mother is fanning him to make him cool and comfortable. It reflects that parents show excessive affection for their children. There is no doubt that parents’ excessive care for their children does more harm than good. First of all, too much care leads to children lacking independence and confidence. As they grow up, they have little ability or courage to challenge difficulties in life. What’s worse, children take anything their parents do for them for granted. Therefore, they become self-centred and indifferent. As far as I am concerned, too much care is not a true love. Great love and concern means providing a good chance for children to fly higher. Parents should love their children in a proper way instead of getting everything done for them so that children can develop the habit of working and living independently. (153 words) 查看更多
