Things at home were not as“busy”as they used to be. We still had our 15-year-old son Gabriel with us,but we missed having Matthew around. My wife soon had a crazy idea. “Let’s get a dog. ”she suggested. I wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea, but I agreed. I mean, what better way to replace a kid that has gone off to college than to get a dog. When we got to the animal shelter,it seemed like every dog was a pit bull(比特犬). I'd had many bad experiences with pit bulls as a child,so I didn’t want to take one of them home with me. - 9 - While I walked along the rows and rows of cold metal cages,a dog caught my eye. He was scared, and looked like he’d given up on life. There was only one problem:he was a pit bull. As he looked at me with his big, beautiful eyes,I could see into his soul. I could see how scared he was and that he just wanted a happy life. I couldn’t just walk away—I had to at least go over and look at him. I approached his cage, and he just sat there, looking at me. I stuck my finger through the hole in the cage and petted him on the head. I expected him to get mad,but he didn’t. I knew that this dog had never felt love before, and that he was enjoying every bit of the love I could give him in that moment. Tears began to stream down my face because I felt everything that this poor creature was feeling right then. He just wanted to be loved;he just wanted a home and a family. It’s been a year since we took the dog home, and our lives have been changed forever. Now,his favorite thing to do is give us kisses with his giant tongue every morning. He is always there to greet us when we come home with a huge smile. He’s shown us more love than any other living creature on Earth ever had before. And every time I look into his eyes I see love, compassion(同情)and gratitude—things I never thought that a pit bull was capable of feeling. 24. Why did the author’s wife want to get a dog? A. Because she likes pit pull. B. Because she thought it was a crazy idea. C. Because she wanted the dog to replace her kid. D. Because their kid went to college. 25. Which word has the similar meaning to the underlined word“thrilled”? A. Accepted. B. Excited. C. Frightened. D. Delighted. 26. What was the author and his wife’s life like with the pit bull? A. They missed having Matthew around even more. B. They found it hard to get along with him. C. They lived a life full of love. D. They regretted adopting him. 27. What is the main purpose of the article? A. To share a warm story about adopting a pet. - 10 - B. To stress the benefits of keeping a pet. C. To suggest people keep a pet of their own. D. To give advice on how to keep a pet. D 25. B 26. C 27. 结合第一段“Last year,my oldest son Matthew went off to college. Things at home were not as“busy”as they used to be. We still had our 15-year-old son Gabriel with us,but we missed having Matthew around.”(去年,我的大儿子 Matthew 去上大学了。 第二段开头“My wife soon had a crazy idea. “Let’s get a dog. ”she suggested. 根据倒数第二段“It’s been a year since we took the dog home, and our lives have been changed forever.”(我们把狗带回家已经一年了,我们的生活已经彻底改变了。),最后一 段中“He’s shown us more love than any other living creature on Earth ever had before.”(他给予我 们的爱,比地球上任何生物都要多。) A。 C Roaming the moon - 11 - The moon may shine white above us most nights of the year, but how much do we know about Earth’s neighbor and what lies beneath its surface? Scientists are aiming to find out. On Jan 3. 2019. China’s Chang’e 4 spacecraft landed on the far side of the moon—a first for humanity. It released a small probe(探测器),Yutu2,or Jade Rabbit 2,which began to search beneath the moon’s surface using Lunar Penetrating Radar(探测雷达). These radio signals can reach 40 meters underground, three times the depth of the Chang’e 3 lunar probe launched in 2013 for the near side of the moon,China Daily reported. In a study published in the journal Science Advances, researchers found that the lunar soil’s top layer on the far side of the moon was much thicker than expected—about 40 meters. Other scientists only expected about 6 millimeters of soil based on NASA observations during the Apollo moon landings, according to The New York Times. “It’s a fine, dusty, sandy environment,”said one of the authors of the study,Elena Pettinelli, a physics and mathematics professor at Rome Tre University,Rome. Yutu 2 is specifically exploring the Von Karman crater,a large hole that is 180 kilometers wide and also the landing site of Chang’e 4. It’s part of an even larger, older crater spanning more than 1, 770 kilometers. “The subsurface at the Chang’e 4 landing site is very complex,”said Li Chunlai,a research professor and deputy director-general of National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of science “Observations suggest that the surface material is totally different than the previous landing site of Chang’e 3. ”she said. Radar waves revealed various layers beneath the moon’s surface:Grainy(颗粒状的)material, rocks, and further layers of fine and rough particles. This information is helping scientists to gain new understanding of the moon’s history and formation,as well as volcanic activity and lunar impacts. Yutu 2 is the longest-working rover(巡视器)on the moon, but it won’t last forever. China plans to launch the Chang’e 5 probe later this year,Xinhua News Agency reported. The spacecraft is expected to bring pieces of the moon back to Earth for closer study. 28. What do we know about the Chang’e 4 probe? A. It was the first to land on the moon’s near side. B. Its signals could reach 40 meters beneath the moon’s surface. - 12 - C. It is three times as large as the Chang’e 3 lunar probe. D. It explored areas as wide as 1,770 kilometers. 29. What does the lunar soil’s top 1ayer on the moon’s far side look like according to the text? A. It looks like a fine, tiny and sandy environment. B. It is about 180 millimeters wide. C. It goes farther down than expected. D. It is covered by huge rocks and fine and rough particles. 30. What may the Chang’e 5 probe be expected to do? A. Explore the Von Karman crater. B. Replace Yutu 2 to explore the moon. C. Release Yutu2. D. Bring lunar samples back to the Earth. 31. What is the text mainly about? A. A report on the Chang’e 4 probe’s findings. B. A comparison of the Chang’e 3 and 4 probes. C. A history of Chinese lunar missions. D. How Yutu 2 explored beneath the moon’s surface. B 29. C 30. D 31. 根据第二段中“These radio signals can reach 40 meters underground, three times the depth of the Chang’e 3 lunar probe launched in 2013 for the near side of the moon, China Daily reported.” 根据第三段中“In a study published in the journal Science Advances, researchers found that the lunar soil’s top layer on the far side of the moon was much thicker than expected – - 13 - about 40 meters.” 根据最后一段中“Yutu 2 is the longest-working rover on the moon, but it won’t last forever. China plans to launch the Chang’e 5 probe later this year, Xinhua News Agency reported. The spacecraft is expected to bring pieces of the moon back to Earth for closer study.” 根据第二段“On Jan 3, 2019, China’s Chang’e 4 spacecraft landed on the far side of the moon – a first for humanity. It was not because he lacked the passion;he just couldn’t accept failures in matches. “I’m not Michael Phelps, why am I even on the team?”he said. A US therapist(治疗专家)who researches perfectionism at Northwestern University realized years later what had happened. Cherkasy’s perfectionism was creating unrealistic standards. Unable to meet them,he quit. “My perfectionism brought about very high expectations, and that caused real suffering,”he said. Cherkasy is not alone in feeling that perfectionism can cause anxiety. So many millennials(千禧 - 14 - 一代)suffer from the ills of perfectionism that psychologists are issuing warnings and schools are emphasizing the need to accept failure. Northwestern had held several seminars that offered tips on how students could deal with a perfectionism problem. Jessica Rohlfing Pryor,a psychologist leading the events, said every generation is a sponge(海 绵)for the messages it receives. “Millennials, more than any other generation in American society, are receiving clear messages around achieving. ”she said. “There’s an absence of messaging that trying your hardest is still OK. ” The American Psychological Association also found out that recent generations of college students have reported higher levels of perfectionism than earlier generations. This“desire to achieve along with being overly critical of oneself and others”affects young people’s mental health, according to its research, which analyzed data from over 40,000 college students. Researchers noted that social media adds comparative pressure, along with the drive to earn money and achieve career goals. Perfectionists often create even higher goals, which can lead to a higher risk of failure. In college,Cherkasy found himself surrounded by so many intelligent people that he felt he should have been achieving a higher level than he was. “It makes you feel kind of crazy,”he said. This type of thinking can lead people to putting in less effort, which,as they fall behind, can create more anxiety “It makes people feel kind of isolated. ”And that,Cherkasy added,”can cause students to drift away from(与…疏离)their schoo1. ” Northwestern is not the only school eager to help students. Brown University includes perfectionism in its counseling services, asking students if they ever feel that what they accomplish isn’t good enough. 32. Why did Cherkasy leave the swim team in eighth grade? A. He couldn’t reach the goal he set for himself. B. He always did poorly in swimming competitions. C. He needed more time to study. D. He found he didn’t have any passion for swimming. 33. Which of the following would Pryor probably not agree with? - 15 - A. Young generations should learn to accept failure. B. Young people should accept being imperfect of themselves. C. Individuals and society will benefit from perfectionism. D. Millennials are eager to work hard to get perfection. 34. What did the American Psychological Association discover? A. Social media users were more likely to be perfectionists. B. Perfectionism could have a negative impact on physical health. C. College students suffer more perfectionism problems than ever. D. Few universities offered help to students with mental problems. 35. The author describes Cherkasy’s experience in college mainly to show____.
