Letters and numbers looked backwards to me,  and I was always falling behind my classmates in elementary school. The other students often played tricks on me and only stopped when I fought with a kid who was laughing at me. At 16,  I dropped out of school.     Life was pretty good for the next few years. I started my own company and became a father in 2011. But one thing changed the course of my life completely. One rainy night I accidentally hit a woman with my car. I got frightened and fled,  then turned myself in a few hours later. Unfortunately,  the woman died and I was sentenced to 17 months in prison.     While in prison,  I buried myself in anything I could to make the hours go faster. Then a corrections officer recommended to me Literal Change,  a non﹣profit literacy program. I decided to give it a try. For me,  it was just another way to pass the time. I met with Robyn,  a program co﹣founder,  one﹣on﹣one twice a week. At first,  the lessons were challenging. Every session,  I learned 10 new vocabulary words and did some exercises. Not long into the program,  I realized I was learning something and making progress. I could spot mistakes other inmates(同狱犯人)were making in their letters home. In my spare time I wrote letters to my son and poems to my wife,  from which I could track the visible improvement in my writing.     I continued working with Robyn right up to the end of my sentence. Before I went to prison,  my wife used to do all of my paperwork for my company,  now I manage it myself. And better yet,  if it weren't for Literal Change,  I'd still be reading just to get by﹣not to better myself and definitely not for fun. These days,  when I pick up a book,  I find it hard to put it down. ‎ ‎(1)What can we know about the author according to the text?________‎ A.He graduated from school as scheduled though it was not easy.‎ B.He was a naughty boy and often fought with other kids.‎ C.He was arrested by the police on the spot where he hit a lady with his car..‎ D.He enjoyed his life after leaving school until he was sent to prison.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(2)While in prison the author signed up for Literal Change because________.‎ A.he considered it a good way to kill time B.a corrections officer required him to do C.he decided to take up challenges.‎ D.it was a non﹣profit literacy program.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(3)What was the greatest benefit the author got from Literal Change?________‎ A.He made great progress in spelling.‎ B.He learned to write letters and poems.‎ C.He changed his attitude towards reading.‎ D.He could deal with paperwork by himself.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎2.     Children choose friends based more on whether they speak alike rather than look alike,  according to a Harvard University study. Social psychologists have long recognized that both kids and adults form and organize relationship networks largely based on the race,  sex and age of others. New findings published in the journal Social Cognition suggest that the race takes a back seat when foreign or non﹣native accents come into play.     Offered the choice of making friends with either a white or black child who spoke English with a French accent or native English,  the group of white,  5﹣year﹣old children chose the native speakers,  no matter what race they are. Kinzler's related research has found that 5﹣month﹣old infants also show similar inclinations(倾向) towards a native accent,  which stresses its powerful role as an important marker of social identity and group membership.     "When we consider how difficult languages are to learn in adulthood,  how someone speaks is a really good marker of where someone's from, " Kinzler told Discovery News.     Kinzler thinks this accent preference allowed early humans to tell the difference between social groups. But in today's society,  it can often have negative influence on the non﹣native speaker. "Fluent speakers who have non﹣native accents often experience unfair treatment,  too, " said Agata Gluszek,  a doctoral student at Yale University. Native listeners also tend to recognize communication problems even when hearing accented language spoken fluently.     Kinzler is now looking more deeply into how children naturally find accents and how that instinct(本能) develops over time. "Young children might have a theory of language that seems to be somewhat different from adults,  in which they think you get your native language at birth and that it stays unchanging over your life, " said Kinzler. ‎ ‎(1)What plays the most important role in children's making friends in an international school?________‎ A. Those who do attend often fail to learn anything. According to one study of seven African countries,  primary﹣school pupils receive less than two﹣and﹣a﹣half hours of teaching each day;  teachers are absent from class about half of the time. Only about a quarter of secondary﹣school pupils in poor countries would reach the basic level of attainment (学识)on international tests.     Then private chain schools have appeared,  offering the promise of innovative education.Since it opened its first branch in 2009,  the private chain, Bridge International Academies,  has expanded to run 520 schools across Kenya, Uganda,  Liberia,  Nigeria and India. To keep standards high,  its teachers read from scripted lessons on a tablet computer. Remote teams use data collected by computers and pupils' test scores to monitor the quality of teachers.     Bridge continues to open new schools,  but it has attracted opposition.Teachers' unions in Kenya and Uganda criticize Bridge for often hiring unlicensed teachers. In Uganda the government has said that it would shut Bridge′s 63 schools that the company expanded without receiving permission from the Ministry of Education. Education International,  a global group of teachers' unions,  accuses the firm of "robbing students of a good education". Private education promises innovation. However,  scripted lessons may be somewhat robotic. In fact,  in countries like Kenya and Uganda teachers need to be encouraged to stop talking,  ask pupils questions and check that the class understands what is going on.     Private﹣school chains are not perfect,  but their rivals(对手)are usually worse. Of the 337 million primary﹣school﹣age children who cannot reach basic international standards, three﹣quarters are in school and most of them are in public schools. Not to try something different would be shameful. ‎ ‎(1)What is paragraph 1 mainly about?________‎ A.The poor school education in developing countries.‎ B.How well children in developing countries learn.‎ C.The learning methods children in developing countries adopt..‎ D.What teachers in developing countries teach at school.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(2)What's the feature of Bridge's private education?________‎ A.Teachers collect data to improve teaching.‎ B.Teachers can reach high standards.‎ C.Students' test scores also play a part in teaching..‎ D.Innovative education is guaranteed in many ways.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(3)What's the author's attitudes towards private schools in developing countries?________‎ A.Favorable. D.Indifferent.‎ 第二节 (满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ How to become a more thankful person In the business of day﹣to﹣day life, we often forget to stop and be grateful for the present moment.(1)_______It has many mental and physical benefits.
