高二英语上学期期中试题(9)

‎××市第六中学2018-2019学年度上学期期中考试 ‎ 高二英语试题 ‎ 第一卷 第一部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)‎ 第一节:(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30 分)‎ A ‎ My 17-year-old daughter went off to college and having her away from home brought back memories of watching Peter Pan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particular impressed me: when Mrs. Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns off the last of the night light, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says, “Dear night lights protect my sleeping children.” As a mother, I know how much she loves her children.‎ ‎ It has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting well after a short period of homesickness. For us, though, it’s another story. Like most parents, I love checking in on my children at night. But now she’s gone, and I find night times the hardest. I miss her most at night.‎ In my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. My husband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off. We complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.‎ ‎ For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. And it’s not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didn’t get any easier. “You feel like something has been taken away from inside you,” said one of them.‎ I imagine things will get easier with time, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile, as I keep my cell phone close to me in bed and text my - 16 -‎ ‎ daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night, I like to think at messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.‎ ‎1. The writer was deeply impressed by the scene in Peter Pan because ________.‎ ‎ A. she watched the scene with her daughter ‎ ‎ B. the scene was very exciting and interesting ‎ C. the scene taught her and her daughter a good lesson ‎ D. as a mother, she understood how much a mother loved her children ‎2. After her daughter went to college, the writer ________.‎ ‎ A. didn’t get used to the change for a long time B. often cried as she missed her daughter so much ‎ C. realized she hadn’t done enough for her daughter D. failed to have a good sleep every night ‎3. What is the underlined word “melancholy” in Paragraph 3 similar in meaning to?‎ ‎ A. Happiness. B. Anger. C. Sadness. D. Excitement.‎ ‎4. According to the last paragraph, why did the writer keep her cell phone close to her in bed?‎ ‎ A. To call her daughter any time. B. To wait for her daughter’s calls.‎ ‎ C. To say good night to her daughter. D. To wait for her daughter’s messages.‎ B One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one’s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,” and it is even harder to say, “I was wrong, and you were right about that.” I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain store in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg boxes. Then he talked of an incident and I began to remember it.‎ - 16 -‎ I was about eight years old at that time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly shopping. On that special day, I must have found my way to the food department where the incident took place.‎ There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was a big show of eggs in dozen and half-dozen boxes. The boxes were put three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of them to admire the show. Just then a woman came by pushing her shopping cart and knocked off the pile of boxes. For some reasons, I decided it was up to me to put the boxes back together, so I went to work.‎ The manager heard the noise and came pushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees checking some of the boxes to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the person who was to blame. He scolded me loudly and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. My face turned red and I tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot the incident, but the manager did not.‎ ‎5. How old was the author when he wrote this article?‎ ‎ A. About 8 years old. B. About 18 years old. C. About 23 years old. D. About 15 years old.‎ ‎6. Who was to blame for knocking off the pile of boxes?‎ ‎ A. The author. B. The manager. C. A woman. D. The author’s mother.‎ ‎7. Which of the following statement is NOT TRUE?‎ ‎ A. The woman who knocked off the pile of boxes was seriously scolded by the manager.‎ ‎ B. The author was loudly scolded by the manager.‎ ‎ C. A woman carelessly knocked off the pile of boxes.‎ ‎ D. It was the author who tried to put the boxes back together.‎ ‎8. The tone of the article expresses the author’s .‎ ‎ A. admiration for the manager’s willingness to admit mistakes ‎ B. anger to the manager for his wrong doing ‎ C. dissatisfaction with the woman who knocked off the pile of cartons ‎ D. regret for the mistake he made in the store - 16 -‎ C ‎ Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science‎ ‎University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels, including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron is sure that this allows people who exercise to think better. As she says, “While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can actually cause physical changes in the brain.”‎ The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. Even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a scientist, also believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in primary school or high school can result from a lack of movement as babies. Babies need movement that encourages and excites their five senses. They need to set up a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to connect physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.‎ Older people can develop their brains as well. Cornell‎ ‎University studied a group of seniors who have a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for older people should not be too simple. Learning some new skills or actions, such as with yoga or tai-chi helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time. For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main aim is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.‎ ‎9. What is the main idea of this passage?‎ A. Exercise makes people strong.‎ - 16 -‎ B. How one can get good scores in a test.‎ C. Exercise can help the brain develop.‎ D. Brain can change one’s memory.‎ ‎10. Why is yoga suggested for the old?‎ A. Because it does good to the joints of old people.‎ B. Because it does not increase the heart rate.‎ C. Because it can help learn new actions.‎ D. Because it can be done in groups.‎ ‎11.For most people, the smallest amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is _____.‎ A. two hours per week B. 40 hours per week C. three hours per day D. 40 hours per month D Is It Worth Buying Organic Food? Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice more for goods with organic labels (商标). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford‎ ‎University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious, and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either. ‎ The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. "We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier," says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. "So consumers shouldn't assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer." ‎ For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats. ‎ While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining ‎ - 16 -‎ on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends. ‎ Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that "whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste." Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.‎ ‎12. The new research questions whether organic food __________.‎ A. should replace traditional food B. has been overpriced by farmers C. is grown with less harmful chemicals D. is really more nutritious and healthier ‎13. Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found that __________.‎ A. organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease B. traditional food was grown with more natural methods C. both organic and traditional food they examined were safe D. there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food ‎14. Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage?‎ A. Organic chicken and pork. B. Organic milk and chicken.‎ C. Traditional chicken and pork. D. Traditional fruit and vegetables.‎ ‎15. What is the author’s attitude toward organic food?‎ A. Sceptical B. Neutral C. Unconcerned D.
