[例题2]: The herdsman ,who looks after sheep, earns about 650 yuan a year. [解析1]: 从解释 the scientific study of man可知anthropology的意思是 “人类学”。 1. Sociology is the term used to describe the scientific study of human society. 2.They need to make their income meet the cost of living, so many people plan a family budget .A budget is a list of monthly expenses. 3.Jane is indecisive ,that is, she can,t make up her mind. 4.The modern age of medicine began with the stethoscope ,an instrument for listening to patients, heartbeat and breathing. 5.Krabacber suffers from SAD ,which is short for seasonal affective disorder, a syndrome characterized by severe seasonal mood swings. 6.They are vertebrates, that is, animals that have back bones. 4.此句中逗号(,)后的同位语an instrument for listening to patients heartbeat and breathing已经给出了划线单词的确切意思,stethoscope为“听诊器”。 5.从seasonal affective disorder, a syndrome characterized by severe seasonal mood swings 推出SAD的意思是 “季节性情绪紊乱症”。 6.从解释animals that have back bones 可知vertebrates的意思是 “脊椎动物”。 (2009年全国高考Ⅰ卷) We have met the enemy, and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it,s hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing or on human beings.“Most of the infections we think of as human infections started in other animals,” says Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University. It,s not just that we,re going to where the animals are, we,re also bringing them closer to us. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen,s pets, and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea.“I don,t think it,s fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge of them,” says Isaken.“Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing,” says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call .Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug may be kind at first. But it may develop into something harmful. Monkey-pox doesn,t look a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person. They have found that all care-givers share a common characteristic: all care-givers believe that they are the best person for the job, for different reasons. One care-giver said that she had always been close to her mother. Another was the oldest child. Another was the youngest child. In other words, they all felt that they could do the job better than anyone else. Social workers interviewed care-givers to find out why they took on the responsibility of caring for an elderly, dependent relative. They discovered three basic reasons. Many care-givers believed that they had an obligation to help their relatives. Some stated that helping others made them feel more useful. Others hoped that by helping someone now, they would deserve care when they became old and dependent. When people care for an elderly relative, they often do not use available community services, such as adult day-care centers. If the care-givers are adult children, they are more likely to use such services, especially because they often have jobs and other responsibilities. In contrast, a spouse, usually the wife, is much less likely to use support services or to put the dependent person in a nursing home. Social workers discovered that the reason for this difference was fear of poverty. An ill, elderly person may live for years, and medical care and nursing homes are very expensive. An elderly couple,s savings can disappear very quickly. The surviving spouse, usually the wife, can be left in poverty. As a result, she often tries to take care of her husband herself for as long as she can. Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families.Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago.Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood. No wonder greeting cards today carry the message,“To my mother,my best friend.” But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There,s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie,a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College.“In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.” Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point.Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say. “My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but todays parents, the 40yearolds,were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr.Ballmer.“Its not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.” Ⅰ. 1.The underlined word gulf in Para.3 most probably means _______________. (2009年全国卷Ⅱ) I know you,re thinking:Pizza(比萨饼)?For breakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night,s leftover in the am if you want to. I know lots of women who skip breakfast(不吃早餐),and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it.Some say they don,t have time, others think they are saving calories(卡路里),still others just don,t like breakfast food. But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you are trying to lose weight.“Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,”says Katherine Brooking,R.D,who developed the super easy eating plan for this year,s SELFCHALLENGE.“And even pizza can be healthy if its loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.” Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating late in the day.Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal. So eat something in the morning, anything.I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice.I say,try heating up last nights leftovers—it may sound crazy, but if it works for you,do it! I find if I tell myself,“You can always eat it tomorrow,” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night.Try it.You may save yourself some prebedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fatburning effects!
