The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are about 100 thousand cars on the road in Taizhou but only enough parking space to provide room for 15 percent of these vehicles. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park. The number of the private car owners is becoming larger and larger. In March, the city sent out 1,500 private car licenses, the highest number of licenses ever sent out in a month. And prices rose to over 2019yuan, 500 more than in February. Industry experts say this suggests that local people want to have their own cars. By the year 2020, the number of cars in Taizhou will probably reach 200 thousand. If one parking lot is for each car, then a lot of parking space should be built for these vehicles. The center of Taizhou is most short of parking space. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in these areas is not practical and doesn’t solve the problem. The idea of “Park & Ride” system has been suggested. This means that underground train and city train should be developed quickly. Drivers can leave their vehicles in car parks near subway and bus stations and then they can ride public transport to go to the city center. Based on this idea, the city will cut down the number of parking lots in the city center and need higher parking fees. Meanwhile it will build more parking areas near main subway and bus stops. 26. The underlined phrase “mapping out” in the first paragraph means ______. A. making B. arguing C. replying D. comparing 27. About _______ drivers can find places to park their cars in Taizhou now. A. 85,000 B. 100,000 C. 15,000 D. 200,000 28. What can we infer from the second paragraph? A. The city sent out more private licenses in February. B. Less and less people bought cars in March. C. A. send out more private car licenses B. build more parking lots near bus stops C. encourage people to buy more cars D. build more parking areas in the city center 30. This passage is mainly about _______. A. parking problems B. heavy traffic C. pollution in Taizhou D. building more parking lots in the city center (B) Once upon a time there was an old man. He was really good at fishing. One day, he was fishing on the bank of a river. Soon he caught a full basket of fish. Just at that time, a child came and said to him, “Can you give me the fishing rod(钓鱼竿) in your hands? The old man looked up at him and said, “I can give you a full basket of fish.” But the child shook his head. The old man was surprised and asked, “Why do you want the rod instead of the fish?” “Oh! You know it doesn’t take long to eat all the fish in a basket. But if I have the fishing rod, I can go fishing by myself and I won’t be afraid of not having any fish to eat.” You may certainly think that the child is very smart. Wrong! If he doesn’t know how to fish, he cannot eat any fish, even if he has the fishing rod. It’s useless to only have a fishing rod. Fishing skills are more important than the fishing rod. Too many people think that if they have “a fishing rod” in their life, they will no longer fear the wind and rain. In fact they will make the same mistake like the child in the story. 31. (C) Since the beginning of history, man has been fascinated by the idea of living forever, of winning the fight against death and disease. So far, this has only remained a dream, though a very powerful one. Many people have wondered whether it would be possible to find a way to preserve human bodies, and what would be the best way to preserve human bodies. It has long been known that meat or fruit can be kept fresh for long periods by freezing; in ancient China, for example, food was stored with ice to keep it fresh. This method could also be useful for preserving humans, and in fact many people have explored this possibility. However, most living beings that exist under warm conditions die when frozen. This is because of the harmful effects of freezing ice crystals, which are not only larger than the volume of the water originally in the cells, but also form sharp cutting shapes that harm the cells. In the 1940s Dr B. J. Luyet and a group of scientists in England were working on the problem of freezing cells without damaging them. Since the harm caused by ice crystals was the main cause of the damage, Luyet suggested removing some or all of the water from the cells before freezing them. Using living cells from chicken, Luyet and his assistants discovered that they could partly dry the chicken cells, using a mixture of the white part of an egg and glycerin, a clear thick liquid made chiefly from fats and oils. Some success was obtained. The chicken cells were dried, frozen for a period of time, and then carefully unfrozen. Almost all the cells recovered when they reached normal temperature. Since then, the cooling of whole animals to a temperature very much below freezing point for later unfreezing has become more of a possibility, and the glycerin method would probably be used to accomplish this. When this can be done completely and successfully, science will have moved much closer to its aim of freezing and storing incurable patients until the day they can be cured. 36. It seems that the idea of preserving human bodies . A. is impractical B. comes from that of storing meat and fruit fresh by freezing C. is quite funny D. doesn’t make any sense 37. From the fact that most living things existing under warm conditions die when frozen, the scientists realize that . A. living things cannot be frozen actually B. it is impossible for them to freeze human beings C. the water from the living cells should be removed D. cells cannot recover when they are carefully unfrozen 38. Glycerin can be used . A. to remove water from living cells B. to unfreeze living cells C. to freeze living cells D. to change the shape of crystals 39. What is the passage mainly about? A.
