Its first use was as a shade against the sun.‎ Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese in the eleventh century B.C.‎ We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and authority(权威). In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high offices.‎ In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was commonly used in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against rain were the ancient Romans.‎ 17‎ During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France and later on in England.‎ By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that women’s umbrellas began to be made in a whole variety of colors.‎ ‎24. Who created umbrella? D. Different usages of umbrella.‎ C Wikie is a 14-year-old whale living in captivity(圈养) in France.‎ Wikie is an orca(逆戟鲸). Orcas are extremely smart, making them dangerous to their prey. Orcas are also called "killer whales."‎ Their intelligence makes them easy for humans to train. Many captive orcas perform tricks for audiences at marine parks. And, as it turns out, orcas can even be trained to “speak” using human language.‎ A group of international researchers said this week they taught Wikie to repeat human words. They taught her to mimic(模仿) words like “hello, ” “bye bye” and the name “Amy.” She also repeated numbers as well as sounds made by the researchers.‎ Wikie was a quick learner; she was able to mimic a word or sound after just 10 tries. It made Wikie a trending topic on social media.‎ In the wild, orcas live in groups of whales called pods. Each pod uses different sounds and calls to communicate with each other. Scientists already knew that orcas were able to learn new whale “dialects.” One orca even learned to communicate with a dolphin while living with it in captivity. ‎ Although Wikie is able to mimic human words and sounds, that does not mean she can understand them. Josep Call is a professor of evolutionary origins of mind at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He is the co-author of the study. He told The Guardian this week that there is no evidence that Wikie understands what “hello” stands for.‎ But the orca’s ability is, in Call’s words, “impressive -- even though the language system (of orcas) is so different, they can still produce a sound that comes close to what another species, in this case, we, can produce. ”‎ The study was published in the journal Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.‎ ‎28. According to the passage, orcas___________‎ 17‎ ‎ A. are difficult to catch in the wild by human beings ‎ B. are popular in different kinds of parks ‎ C. are ordinary in their ability to hunt ‎ D. are easy to train because of their cleverness ‎29. “It” in paragraph 5 refers to___________‎ ‎ A. That Wikie is able to learn and imitate within a short time.‎ ‎ B. That Wikie becomes a popular animal on the Internet.‎ ‎ C. That Wikie can mimic ten words and sounds quickly.‎ ‎ D. That Wikie can produce sounds of names and numbers as well.‎ 17‎ ‎30. What do we know about orcas in the wild?‎ ‎ A. Their sounds and calls for communication differ from one pod to another ‎ B. It is common that they live in groups with different whales for safety ‎ C. They can create new “whale dialects” soon after they join a new group ‎ D. They learn to communicate with dolphins in the natural environment ‎31. From the last paragraph but one, it can be inferred that___________‎ ‎ A. The orca is the most capable marine animal in learning human language.‎ ‎ B. The orca has impressed scientists a lot with its unique language.‎ ‎ C. Orcas are able to make sounds similar to human beings’.‎ ‎ D. For orcas, other animals’ sounds are easier to mimic than humans’.‎ D Once upon a time two friends Dev and Ram were passing through a forest. On their way they were attacked by wild bulls. Seeing the bulls, both were frightened. Dev began thinking about what would happen to his sons and the loan amount he had to take from his friend, whereas Ram focused on the present. He could see a tree. He ran towards it and quickly climbed it. Apparently he was saved but Dev got run over by the bulls.‎ The only thing that matters is the present moment. Our past is nothing but memories. Similarly our future is just a thought; it has yet to happen.‎ As we see in the story, Ram lived in the present moment. He saw the branched tree and took appropriate action to save his life. His focus was on NOW therefore he was powerful. Dev on the other hand wasn’t happy about the present situation so he allowed his mind to travel to the past and future. He lost focus, therefore became powerless in the present situation. He compared the present moment with his pleasant moments of the past and future. He let his ego(自我) control the present. ‎ When we think about past and future, we actually drain(耗尽) ourselves of our energy and time and thus feel weak in the present moment. Then we also fall in the ego trap of how the present should have been, thus losing emotional stability.‎ 17‎ It is clear that we need to train our mind. Our mind easily dwells on the past or worries about the future. We need to be the master of our own thoughts. If you are driving a car, you cannot look into the rear mirror most of the time!‎ Live in the present. Stop thinking of what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow. Concentrate on what is happening; you will be able to see what is wrong with it! Once you start accepting and living it you will start getting solutions to the present. ‎ Focus makes you powerful. It not only lets you achieve but also you start enjoying it. ‎ ‎32. What happened to the two friends in the forest?‎ ‎ A. They had a fight with the wild bulls.‎ ‎ B. The wild bulls attacked them for food.‎ ‎ C. Dev was too frightened to run away.‎ ‎ D. Ram got on a tree and saved himself.‎ 17‎ ‎33. Which of the following statements about the two friends is correct?‎ ‎ A. Dev made comparisons between what he had had and what he hadn’t.‎ ‎ B. Dev wasn’t content with the present and thought about the past and future. ‎ ‎ C. Ram focused on the present and cleared the past and future out of his mind.‎ ‎ D. Ram was stronger in that he could climb the tree as quickly as he could.‎ ‎34. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 5 mean?‎ ‎ A. to feel regretful about something B. to keep thinking about something ‎ C. to learn experience from something D. to make plans for something ‎35. What should we do to focus on NOW?‎ ‎ A. We should plan our future according to the present.‎ ‎ B. We should learn from things that have happened.‎ ‎ C. We should learn to take control of our own thoughts.‎ ‎ D. We should observe what is wrong with the present.‎ 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Each of us has access to guidance if we would take the time to listen to it. It’s important to pay attention to what we are feeling -- as often our gut instincts(直觉) are right.‎ ‎ 36 We instead pay attention to “logic” and what makes sense to us. Unfortunately we often give away our power by placing what other people think as being more important than our own thoughts. Do others really know us better than we know ourselves? Shouldn’t we be our own best judge? 37 ‎ Your inner voice is always there to offer you guidance and help. It will become louder the more you listen to it.‎ Have you ever been in a situation where you felt you were in danger? Do you feel a kind of strong feeling in your body that warned you to stay away? 38 They listened to it and later found out it prevented them from some kind of trouble.‎ This is your inner voice. Your intuition. We all have it. All you have to do ‎ 17‎ is practice trusting and allowing your voice to be heard. 39 This may be hard at first because we are so used to avoid this voice with our own logic and telling it to be quiet.‎ The more you listen to it and honor it, the more it will help you out. 40 ‎ A. It will become your new best friend.‎ B. In fact, everybody has an inner voice.‎ C. Partly because we do not trust this inner voice, we ignore it.‎ D. Practice listening to your inner voice whenever you can.‎ E. After all who knows us better than we know ourselves?‎ F. Practice spending quiet times alone.‎ G.
