Though the meanings shown for sayings are believed to be generally accepted, for some sayings sometimes they may go otherwise. No Use Crying Over Spilt(溢出的) Milk. Crying can help people recover from - 14 - disappointment. True, it’s dangerous to live on the past, but holding back those spilt-milk tears could hurt even more. A survey of more than 5,000 weepers in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology suggests that people who do not cry only feel worse. Or, to put it another way, “Sometimes we should cry over spilt milk,” writes Aaron Ben-Ze’ev, a philosophy professor at the University of Haifa in Israel. “Otherwise, how will we learn to value milk, and how will we avoid spilling it again?” You Catch More Flies with Honey than with Vinegar. Vinegar(醋) is a fly magnet. If you’ve ever endured a fruit fly(苍蝇) invasion in your home, a bowl of vinegar was likely your first line of defense. Researchers from Northwestern University found that “The hungrier a fly gets, the quicker it gives in to vinegar”. Money Can’t Buy Happiness. Yes, it can. Happiness is going by no matter what your bank account looks like, but research shows that money does, in fact, give you short-term bursts of joy—if you spend wisely. Experiences such as concerts or holidays have been shown to bring greater happiness than shopping. People who spend money on others are also measurably happier than those who treat themselves. So do yourself a favour: buy happiness for someone else. Pick the Low-Hanging Fruit First (“Low-hanging fruit” refers to easy-to-reach fruit or easy-to-finish tasks). Lower fruit is often the last to grow fully. “Fruit that is high up, exposed to the sun, develops the fastest,” says Gennaro Fazio, a plant geneticist(基因学家) for the USDA’s Agricultural Resource Service, “and you want to pick the low-hanging fruit last, so it has more time to develop.” What’s more, “Starting at the top makes the job easier,” says Henry Rueda, an apple-picking professional. When pickers harvest from top to bottom, the bags of fruit they carry around their necks and shoulders grow heavier as they move downwards. 21.Which of following statements is supported by Gennaro Fazio? A. The low-hanging fruit is often the last that we are supposed to pick. B. The first goals set for yourself should be easier to achieve than other goals. C. Workers enjoy the ease with which the lower fruit can be picked in the tree. D. Every situation is different and easy pickings that count are done first. 22.According to the article, the writer may argue that ________. - 14 - A. one’s words can never be taken back just like the spilt milk B. money is not a good servant but a bad master when it speaks C. blindly believing the whole book is worse than having no book D. flies are much fonder of honey than vinegar when they’re hungry 23.Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. What Are the Household Sayings for? B. What Are Wrong with These Sayings? C. Where Are These Well-known Sayings from? D. How Can These Sayings Be Understood? Dogs are likely to have complex emotions such as jealousy(嫉妒)and pride, according to a new scientific research. Dogs feel very jealous when they find that they are unfairly treated. And they do not like seeing their owners being kind to other creatures, especially other dogs. They often react negatively(消极地)when their owners bring home new pets, the research found. “Dogs show a strong aversion to unfair treatment,” Dr. Friederike Range of the Vienna University said. At first, people believed most animals lack(缺少)the “sense of self” , which is needed to experience so-called secondary emotions such as jealousy, embarrassment or guilt. These emotions are more complex than feelings such as anger or joy. Besides dogs research, another research includes cows, horse, cats and sheep, and all the results have shown that animals are far more self-aware than we thought. Dr Paul Morris, a psychologist at the University of Portsmouth who studies animal emotions, told The Sunday Times, “We are learning that dogs, horses, and perhaps many other species are far more emotionally complex than we ever realized. They can suffer simple forms of many emotions we once thought only primates (灵长类) could experience.” In research among dog owners, Dr Morris found almost all of them reported jealous behavior by their pets. The dog often tried to keep their owner away from a new lover in the early days of a relationship. - 14 - Behavioral experts suggest that owners should keep a close relationship with the dog as usual when a new pet or child comes along in order to prevent jealous activity from the dog such as interruptions with barking. 24.What is the new discovery about the relationship between dogs and human? A. Dogs usually have more emotions than humans. B. Dogs are often treated unfairly by humans. C. Humans are angry about their dogs’ negative reactions. D. Dogs feel unhappy when their owners show kindness to other creatures. 25.What does the underlined word “aversion” in the second paragraph mean? A. Internet B. Dislike C. Concern D. Fear 26.What does the “the sense of self” in the third paragraph probably mean? A. It is a complex feeling that belongs to humans. B. It is a kind of ability to feel other people’s emotions. C. It is a necessary awareness to feel some complex emotions. D. It is a kind of emotion which is based on anger or joy. 27.Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to the fourth and fifth paragraphs? A. The research includes four kinds of animals. B. Animals are more self-aware than humans. C. Dogs experience more emotions than primates. D. Animals are emotionally complex. When I was only 3 years old, my mother taught me to memorize and recite poems. She was my first teacher of the arts, and my father was the first to appreciate my performance. Even at that young age, I had a simple understanding of how art and culture affect us as human beings and how we can connect to each other through the arts, which shapes my life to this day. When I was growing up, my parents supported my interest in taking acting classes and doing community theater. Their faith in me and the professional(专业的) training I - 14 - was getting from my theater teachers gave me a sense of purpose and a sense of self-confidence. I learned what artistic achievement actually was and what hard work the business was. While many people see the rosy picture to our business, I was really learning what it would require for me to become a professional. I became an actress, but arts education isn’t just about preparing our young people for a job in the arts. I recently talked to some of the kids attending theater education. Some of them want to work in theater, and some don’t. They are learning not only theater skills, but also about the world around them. They learn about discipline(纪律) and hard work and what’s required and what they have to do to bring themselves to the work. They learn how they can be of service in the world through the arts. They learn how to work with a team. By studying the arts, these students are open to worlds and lives that they might not have any other way of knowing about or any other way to connect with in their lives the way they are right now. These young people are our future. We are passing the torch to them. And I think that’s one of the most important reasons why we need to foster(培养) the arts. 28.When the writer was 3 years old, she ________. A. learned many kinds of arts B. did well in communication C. recited poems to her father D. had a deep understanding of arts 29.What does the underlined word “rosy” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Bright. B. Funny. C. Terrible. D. Hopeless. 30.What can be inferred from the second paragraph? A. It was hard for the writer to start business. B. It is not easy for one to succeed in arts field. C. Parents’ faith is a must for one to be professional. D. The writer’s self-confidence led to her artistic achievement. 31.According to Paragraph 3, which of the following statement is TRUE? A. Attending theatre education does the kids much good. B. Students studying the arts should travel around the world. C. Discipline and hard work are not included in arts education. - 14 - D. Arts education can only prepare the youth for jobs in the arts. 32.What is the text mainly about? A. Where to get arts education. B. When kids should learn arts. C. How to improve arts education. D.
