But when Hinga, 34, introduced himself, Wanja, a nurse from the Kenyan capital, said she found herself in shock. Standing before her was a friend she'd known since she was seven.‎ Hinga was abandoned by his parents and lived with his grandmother. When she couldn't pay his school fees, he was forced to skip classes. However, against all the difficulties, Hinga did well in his exams, until his grandmother died-then he left school and started abusing drugs. From then on, Hinga and Wanja lost touch. And when they met again, Hinga had been homeless for over a decade. ‎ Sensing Wanja's shock, Hinga convinced her that he'd only wanted to greet her. Anyway, she gave him her mobile number before leaving him. Over the next days, Hinga borrowed phones and would regularly call his childhood friend, often just to hear her voice. He told her he was committed to getting clean from drugs.‎ ‎"I decided then, that something needed to be done to help him," Wanja says.‎ She set up a crowd-funding(众筹) page and managed to raise much money. Then she took him to Chiromo Lane Medical Center in Nairobi. Within days Hinga gained weight and his concentration improved. Wanja took to Facebook to speak about her pride at her friend's transformation in such a short period of time.‎ ‎"People say I changed Hinga's life, but he changed mine too. " says Wanja. Dog bites are harmful, and some require hospitalization or even operation. Any kind of dog might bite. And that a dog is small or seems friendly doesn't mean it can't do some damage. Even the nicest, most well trained family dog may bite if it's scared, angry, or hungry.‎ To reduce the risk of bites, teach your kids these: Always ask the owner if it's OK to pet the dog; Let the dog see and sniff you before petting it; Do not run toward or away from a dog; If an unfamiliar dog comes near you, stay calm, don't look it directly in the eye, and stand still or back up slowly; If a dog tries to bite you, put anything you can between you and the dog.‎ If your family has a dog, make sure it gets all required immunizations (防疫注射) and regular checkups in an animal hospital. Also, consider taking your dog to a dog training school to make it more social and obedient(听话的), and thus less likely to bite someone. When you take your dog out in public, always keep it on a rope so you can control it if its behavior gets out of hand. If you have kids, keep a close eye on them when they're around the dog and never leave a young child alone with your pet. If your child is bitten by a dog, get in touch with your doctor, particularly if the dog is not yours. Some dog bites need to be treated in an emergency department.‎ ‎28. According to the first paragraph, dog bites .‎ ‎ A. are done by fierce dogs B. mainly happen to teenagers ‎ C. happen frequently in America D. can cause little or almost no harm ‎29. What are kids advised to do when seeing a strange dog approaching?‎ ‎ A. Run away quickly. B. Look at it in the eye.‎ ‎ C. Touch its head softly. D. Walk backwards slowly.‎ ‎30. What should you do if you keep a dog as a pet?‎ ‎ A. Have it examined regularly. B. Train it patiently on your own.‎ ‎ C. Avoid walking it in public places. D. Allow your kids to play with it alone.‎ ‎31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ ‎ A. Causes of Dog Bites B. How to Avoid Dog Bites ‎ C. What to Do with Dogs Bites D. Things to Know about Dog Bites D Parents and educators can teach kids to change their fixed mindsets(思维) and see more potential in themselves and other people. Do you agree with this statement? If your answer is yes,‎ ‎ here's something you might consider: Research suggests that believing in the human ability to change is linked to less depression(沮丧), better health, and greater achievement. This is the "growth mindset", an idea pioneered by Stanford researcher Carol Dweck.‎ According to this research, when we practice a growth mindset, the difficulties we're facing seem more likely to be surmounted. It's important for us to realize we aren't helpless, and that we can grow and adapt. Just as important as seeing ourselves as able to grow, this reduces some of the pressure we might feel, and helps us think more in terms of challenges than threats(威胁).‎ According to studies, developing a growth mindset is of importance. For example, a simple belief in the possibility of change may have a powerful effect on our thinking-potentially freeing us to actually see our way through anxiety and a sense of failure among peer(同龄人) conflicts. Research also indicates that believing personalities can change and lower aggression behavior. Additionally, if we believe personalities are changeable and that situations can change, we can also apply this thinking to groups.‎ A growth mindset isn't a personal state of being; instead, it's a way of thinking or a strategy we can apply in a given situation. It isn't something you simply have or you don't. However, sometimes it's really challenging to access a growth mindset. Something like feeling threatened, compared or criticized can make us feel unsafe so that it can be difficult to believe in the ability for change. Fortunately, there's always something you can do to develop a growth mindset.‎ ‎32. According to Carol Dweck, a growth mindset is the belief that our abilities .‎ ‎ A. are stable B. aren't fixed ‎ ‎ C. are for growth D. are linked to health ‎33. What does the underlined word "surmounted " in Paragraph 2 probably mean?‎ ‎ A. Overcome. B. Strengthened. C. Predicted. D. Approved.‎ ‎34. According to studies, people with growth mindsets are more likely to .‎ ‎ A. behave more bravely B. be strict with themselves ‎ C. do something on their own D. get along better with others ‎35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?‎ ‎ A. A growth mindset is difficult to develop.‎ ‎ B. People with growth mindsets will not be criticized.‎ ‎ C. The sense of insecurity can be a barrier to a growth mindset.‎ ‎ D. Growth mindsets are challenging if people don't have good states.‎ 第二节:(共5个小题;每题2分,满分10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项多用选项。‎ ‎ 36 You don't have to completely change the way you live. So people eat them to indicate union, harmony and happiness for the family. On the other hand, lanterns of various shapes and sizes are hung in the streets, attracting countless visitors. Guessing lantern riddles is an important part of the festival, which is interesting and full of wisdom. What's more, besides grand lanterns, fireworks form a beautiful scene. I love chocolate cake!‎ W: You can have some fruit for dessert. If you eat an apple, I might let you have a small piece of chocolate cake. (1) ‎ Text 2‎ M: It’s only 6:30, and you’re done! I won’t finish work until 10:00. You’re very efficient.‎ W: Well, Tom finished two hours earlier than me. (2) ‎ Text 3‎ W: Do you think it’s serious, doctor? Will I have to stay home from school?‎ M: I doubt it. Take two of these pills every morning, and come back to see me in two weeks. (3)‎ Text 4‎ W: Don’t turn the dishwasher on! The baby just fell asleep. I need a break! I’m exhausted from cooking soup and baking cookies all morning. (4) ‎ M: Oh! I’ll run it later, then. Let’s sit outside and read while she sleeps. ‎ Text 5‎ W: Have you ever been to Yellowstone National Park? My uncle is taking me there for the first time next weekend.‎ M: No. My parents went there with my sister before I was born, though. (5)‎ Text 6‎ W: Where are you going to take your vacation?‎ M: Hawaii.‎ W: That sounds like a great place to visit. Is your family going?‎ M: Yes. We plan to go mountain climbing, fishing, swimming, and windsurfing. But most of all, we’re planning to relax. My wife is taking a whole bunch of books to read. (6) ‎ W: Your children must all be excited about it.‎ M: Yes, they are. They’re counting the days. Are you going to Europe again this summer? (7) ‎ W: No, not this time. (7) We’re going to visit some old friends in Egypt.‎ Text 7 (第9题为推断题)‎ M: I don’t have a good camera. How am I going to take nice pictures of the butterflies? (8) They are so colorful. I want to get in really close so everyone can see the details.‎ W: Our photography lab loans cameras to all students enrolled in my class. Don’t worry. Just show your student ID and they will give you one.‎ M: What if I lose it? Or break it? ‎ W: Just be as careful with the camera as you are with your own one. We trust you. Plus, you need to pay a deposit of $500, just in case something does happen.‎ M: I think I’m better off buying my own. (10) I bet I can get one for $60. Even if I get a used one, it’s better than having to owe the school $500.‎ Text 8‎ M: Two more miles to go…we have an hour before school starts. Let’s take our time. Do you want to stop and get a breakfast sandwich?‎ W: We decided to start walking to school for the exercise. We want to get fit. (11) Why would we want to eat a fattening breakfast sandwich?‎ M: McDonald’s has an egg muffin sandwich that has only 320 calories. (12) What’s wrong with that? I bet we walked off 320 calories already. After two more miles, we can probably walk off another 100 calories.‎ W: I do need energy. I hardly ate dinner last night. My mom made leg of lamb, and it’s definitely not my favorite. In fact, I think I’m going to become a vegetarian. (13) ‎ M: Good for you! I gave up meat a long time ago. Now, almost all of my meals are salads. Funny thing is, when I make my food, I also make food for my rabbit. We mostly eat the same things now.‎ W: My bird eats seeds and berries. We could probably share our meals, too!‎ Text 9‎ M: Have you ever been to the Hard Rock Café? ‎ W: No, what is it? ‎ M: It’s a rock ’n’ roll themed restaurant, but some locations are also hotels. It’s a chain, so cities all over the world have them. There’s one in San Francisco. I was thinking about checking it out. Would you like to join me?‎ W: Sure, that sounds fun.‎ M: The original café was founded in London in 1971, (14) but since 2007, the headquarters has been in Florida. It didn’t start to expand worldwide until 1982, (15) and the one in San Francisco opened in 1984.‎ W: Interesting. Actually, come to think of it, I think I passed by one when I was traveling in Istanbul, Turkey. Wow, I guess they really are all over the world! ‎ M: Yes, it’s a very international chain. I was reading about it, and apparently, there are 191 locations all over the world, in 59 different countries. (16) ‎ W: Wow! That’s amazing. ‎ M: Maybe we can go this weekend.‎ W: I’m working this weekend, but I get my schedule for the following week tomorrow. I should probably have a few days free next week. (17) ‎ M: Okay, sounds good. I’ll call and see if I can make a reservation. Just give me a call when you know your schedule. (17) ‎ Text 10 ‎ We have an important announcement for all volunteers! In two days, we are going to have an extra 40 volunteers who will help us organize food, put it into boxes, and deliver it to different food centers. The high school students from Lister Central High School are volunteering their time on Friday to help us. (18) The students will only be here for three hours, so we need to make sure we know what their jobs are. (19) Tony, Elizabeth, and Diane, I want you all to help the students put pasta, beans, and fruit into boxes. Then, please show the students how to put the boxes in the truck. Also, we need to make sure none of the students get hurt. Do not let the students use the machines, drive the truck, or use knives to open the boxes. Also, Mindy, I would like you to give the students a short history lesson about our food bank before they start. (20) Many of the students are football players and are very strong. Please ask them to carry the heavy boxes so the others can focus on different tasks. Students who are small and not as strong can help us write down what boxes have been organized and what type of food is in each box. Lastly, make sure to tell the students “Thank you”. Hopefully, they will come back and volunteer again very soon!‎ 答案 1—5 ACBBC 6—10 ABABA 11—15 BBABC 16—20 CACAC
