Finding ways to protect the earth's wildlife and conserve the natural world they inhabit (居住) is now more important than ever. Dodo The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth's biology. The flightless Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It lived off fruit fallen from the island's trees and lived unthreatened until humans arrived in 1505. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681. Rhinos The Rhino ( 犀 牛 ) horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat. Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most Rhinos now live in protected natural parks and reserves (保护区). Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant threat from poachers(偷猎者). The Giant Panda The future of the World Wildlife Fund's symbol is far from certain. As few as 1,000 remain in the wild. The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals and made poaching them punishable with 20 years in prison. However, the panda's distinct black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose (造成) one of the most serious threats to the animals continued existence. Whales The International Whaling Commission is fighting to ensure the survival of the whale species. Despite the fact that one-third the world's oceans have been declared whale sanctuaries (保护 区 ), 7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered. Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to just 300. Collisions with ships, poisonous pollution and being caught in fishing nets are other major causes of whale deaths. Tigers The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is precariously close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive. Like the Rhino horn, tigers' bones and organs are sought after for traditional Chinese medicines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins. 1. Which group of the following animals has already died out according to the text? A. The Dodo and the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers. B. The Rhino, Whale and the South China tiger. C. The Rhino, Panda, Whale and Tiger. D. The Dodo, Rhino and Giant Panda. 2. can serve as a cure for certain diseases. A. The Dodo's delicious meat B. The panda's black and white patched coat C. The whale's rich oil D. The Rhino horn and tigers' bones and organs 3. Which of the following is mentioned in all the descriptions of those wild animals? A. The way of their life. B. Why they are hunted. C. The reason for their extinction or being in danger. D. Punishment for hunting wild animals. B Some people would go through anything just to achieve their dream. Kasia Siwosz is proof. Born in Poland, Siwosz began playing tennis at seven years old and developed the skills that helped her earn a top-50 ranking among the ITF Junior division Siwosz wanted to do more with her life than just play tennis, which led her to seek chances that would also allow her to obtain a top education. “There’s no collegiate (大学的) sports in Poland and no culture of sports and academic study there. You can only do one, not both,” Siwosz said. Her desire to have a quality education led her to America to follow her dream. While Siwosz was talented enough to begin her collegiate tennis career, she could only attend community college because she missed the deadline to apply to four-year schools, mainly due to misinformation provided in her home country of Poland. When she had earned all her credits and was able to transfer, Siwosz made the decision to attend Baylor in Texas. Her friends from Poland put in a good word for the university, saying that it was a good fit because there were many international players at Baylor. “I thought it would be a good idea, but it really wasn’t what I thought it would be,” Siwosz said. “I wasn’t happy at Baylor. The level of tennis was high, but the academic standards were no match and I just wanted more.” After one year at Baylor, Siwosz’s luck finally began to change when she made the decision to transfer to Berkeley, which was due in large part to Lee, a former Berkeley student. Lee, who is a keen tennis player himself, met Siwosz four years ago in Texas. “I knew she was unhappy there,” he said. “I saw the opportunity for her to come here.” Siwosz visited Lee in Berkeley. “I ended up loving this place and this school,” Siwosz said. “I came here a lot over the summer, I gave it a shot and I ended up with a Berkeley education and a spot on one of the best college tennis teams in the country.” 1. Why did Siwosz want to leave her homeland for America? A. Poland had no culture of sports. B. Berkeley had always been her dream university. C. She wanted to play tennis and have a good education. D. She wanted to improve her tennis skills and get a higher ranking. 2. Why didn’t Siwosz take Baylor as her first choice when she first arrived in America? A. The level of tennis in Baylor was not high. B. It was too late for her to apply to a school like Baylor. C. Her home country of Poland forbade her to Baylor. D. Baylor was not suitable for international students. 3. How did Siwosz feel in Berkeley? A. She was unhappy there. B. She had difficulty in keep up with others. C. She enjoyed studying there. D. She regretted going there. 4. What is the main idea of the passage? A. How Siwosz realized her dream. B. How Siwosz left Poland. C. How Siwosz became a tennis player. D. How Siwosz transferred from Baylor to Berkeley. C It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t identify you or any of their friends -- every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time. But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago. In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again. Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences. In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively( 挑 衅 地 ) in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past “fights”. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence. Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild. “If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science. For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence. 2. According to the article, people commonly believe that . A. fish can only remember part of their past experiences B. fish can remember things that happened long time ago C. a fish’s memory lasts for only seven minutes D. fish don’t recognize any of their friends 3. How can fish benefit most from a good memory? They can remember . A. where to get food and survive B. their enemies and fight C. where to escape to when in danger D. their friends and help each other 2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. African cichlids always treat other fish aggressively. B. African cichlids can remember things for 12 days. C. African cichlids don’t belong to the list of smart animals. D. Only African cichlids have a good memory. 3. What is the article mainly about? A. Fish having very bad memories. B. Fish being smarter than we thought. C. How fish improve their memory. D. What we can learn from fish. D When something goes wrong, it can be very satisfying to say, “Well, it’s so-and-so’s fault.” or “I know I’m late, but it’s not my fault; the car broke down.” It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success. Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your colleague causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. Ask to work with a different person, or don’t rely on this person. You should accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well. This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners don’t have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power over bad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success. 1. According to the passage, winners . A. blame themselves rather than others B. meet with fewer difficulties in their lives C. have responsible and able colleagues D. deal with problems rather than blame others 2. The underlined word remedy in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to . A. improve B. accept C. avoid D. consider 3. When problems occur, winners take them as . A. excuses for their failures B. chances for self-development C. challenges to their colleagues D. barriers to greater power 4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. A Winner’s Opportunity. B. A Winner’s Problem. C. A Winner’s Secret. D. A Winner’s Achievement. In the age of the keyboard, some people seem to think handwriting lessons are on the way out. Steve Graham, a literacy professor at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, has been hearing about the death of handwriting for the past fifteen years. 16 He said, "If the results of a survey we have published this year are accurate, it is being taught by about ninety percent of teachers in grades one to three." Ninety percent of teachers also say they are required to teach handwriting. 17 . Professor Graham says one study published this year found that about three out of every four teachers say they are not prepared to teach handwriting. 18 Others teach it for sixty to seventy minutes a day. Many adults remember learning that way — by copying letters over and over again. 19 Many experts also think handwriting should not be taught only with itself. Instead, they say it should be used as a way to get students to express ideas. 20 . Teachers commonly report that about a quarter of their students have poor handwriting. Some people might think handwriting is not important anymore because of computers and voice recognition (识别) programs. A. After all, that is why we write. B. Nowadays teachers pay more and more attention to their students’ writing. C. So is it still being taught? A. But who cares if people know how to write well? B. But studies have yet to answer the question of how well they are teaching it. C. Today’s thinking is that short periods of practices are better. D. He says some teachers teach handwriting for ten to fifteen minutes a day. 第二部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节 完形填空(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) There was a boy in India who was sent by his parents to a boarding school (寄宿学校). 根据Dodo下面的一段最后一句“The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and last one was killed in 1681”可知,Dodo是灭绝的动物之一。再根据最后一段第一句中的“The Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct”可知,the Bali, Javan和 Caspian tigers是灭绝的动物。故选A。 2. 根据Rhinos下面一段的第一句“The Rhino (犀牛) horn is a highly prized item for Asian medicine.”和最后一段第二句“The South China tiger is precariously close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive. Like the Rhino horn, tigers' bones and organs are sought after for traditional Chinese medicines.” 通读全文,尤其是第一段第一句“Many animal and plant species have become extinct and many more are in critical danger.” 再根据第二段最后一句“The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681.”,第三段最后一句“Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant threat from poachers”,第四段的最后一句“he panda's distinct black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose one of the most serious threats to the animals continued existence.”,第五段中的第二句“Despite the fact that one-third the world's oceans have been declared whale sanctuaries (保护区), 7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered.”和第六段中的“The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction... Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is precariously close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive.” 根据第二段中第二句和第三句“Siwosz wanted to do more with her life than just play tennis, which led her to seek chances that would also allow her to obtain a top education. “There’s no collegiate sports in Poland and no culture of sports and academic study there.”” 再根据第三段第一句“Her desire to have a quality education led her to America to follow her dream.” 根据第三段第二句“While Siwosz was talented enough to begin her collegiate tennis career, she could only attend community college because she missed the deadline to apply to four-year schools, mainly due to misinformation provided in her home country of Poland.” “I ended up loving this place and this school,” Siwosz said. “I came here a lot over the summer, I gave it a shot and I ended up with a Berkeley education and a spot on one of the best college tennis teams in the country.”” 通读全文,特别是根据第一段“Some people would go through anything just to achieve their dream. Kasia Siwosz is proof.” 故选A。 根据第一段第二句“It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t identify you or any of their friends -- every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.” 根据第四段第二句“If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.” 故选A。] 10. 根据第二段第三句“In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago.” 第二段第二句“A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think.” 根据第一段最后两句“However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner's key to success.” 根据本句“However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation.” 故选A。] 14. 根据第三段第三句“They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents.” 16. C 根据下文中的"it is being taught by about ninety percent of teachers in grades one to three"可知,空处应表示对是否要教学生书法的疑问,故C项符合语境。 17. If the results of a survey we have published this year are accurate, it is being taught by about ninety percent of teachers in grades one to three." Others teach it for sixty to seventy minutes a day." Many adults remember learning that way — by copying letters over and over again." Many experts also think handwriting should not be taught only with itself." Instead, they say it should be used as a way to get students to express ideas.",此处表示表达想法正是我们练习书法的原因,所以A项符合语境。 21.
