One researcher says babies cared for by their fathers have greater cognitive ( 认知的 ) development at one year of age than babies not cared for by their fathers. Another expert reports that by spending time with their pre- school children, fathers can help to develop children ’s language ability. Researchers also point out that for school-age children, fathers are one link with the outside world. Fathers who value education have children who do better in school than those children whose fathers don ’t value education. What ’s more, fathers who spend quality time with their children may give their children happy memories which may last a lifetime. While each father is a unique person who educates children in his own style, good fathers have something in common. Good fathers attend their children ’s school activities. They also involve the children in their lives and the adult world by taking them to see the workplace, or by taking them when the car needs to be repaired, etc. Good fathers expect a great deal from their children, but also accept and support the unique individuals that their children are becoming. Good fathers rely on explanations and reasoning rather than force. Good fathers know their time with children is really an investment ( 投资 ) in them. Being an involved father is good for children and good for fathers. Both children and fathers have the opportunity for growth and development. Today ’s lifestyles are changing. More and more fathers are balancing their personal life, work, and family time. 26. The passage is mainly about . A. the good fate of their children B. better reading levels of their children C. happy memories which may last a lifetime D. greater cognitive development of their children B It is a great, big, wide-open sky over our heads, but when you are flying in a jet airliner at 600 miles an hour, the sky is not so big. That’s part of the reason why, in the first four months of this year, the government said only 72 percent of all flights arrived on time, the lowest number since the recent system of reporting began in 1995. The runways are full, the planes are jammed, and air traffic controllers complain they ’re stressed out. And the radar systems that keep things going are, in large part, technology of the 1960s. “It ’s like driving down the road with a paper bag over your head, and you’re trying to stay out of the way of other cars, ” says Captain Karen Lee, a 747 pilot who heads operations for UPS, the delivery service. At its center in Louisville, UPS is experimenting with the next generation in air traffic control: planes guided by the satellites of the Global Positioning System, instead of radar. Though it has advanced greatly over the years, radar is a technology that dates back to World War II. It scans the sky, looking for signals from planes in the air. Typically, air traffic radar only updates a plane ’s position once every 12 seconds or so — and in 12 seconds, a jet can move two miles or make a turn. What ’s more, radar signals can be blocked by storms or mountains. But with GPS signals, pilots can see in real time exactly where they are, and where other planes are, too. A readout screen in the cockpit ( 驾驶舱 ) tells the pilots what ’s around them. “What we end up with is a very exact location for each aircraft in the system, ” said Basil Barimo of the Air Transport Association, which represents airlines. 31. According to the passage, we know that ______. A. the sky over our heads is becoming smaller B. the condition of air traffic is terrible now C. the service of air companies is quite bad D. few planes are in the sky 32. The planes are jammed, mainly because _______. A. the number of planes is increasing too fast B. the control system hasn ’t kept up with the development of air traffic C. there is not enough room for so many planes in the sky D. the weather has become worse these years 33. What kind of air control system will be used instead of radar? A. The Global Positioning System. B. A more advanced radar system. C. A new unusual satellite. D. A readout screen in the cockpit. 34. Which of the following is a disadvantage of the radar system? A. It can only update a plane ’s position once every 12 minutes. B. Its signals may not be received because of certain reasons. C. The cost of radar is less than the cost of the Global Positioning System. D. It can help pilots know exactly where they are in real time. 35. According to the passage, we can infer that ______. A. air traffic is developing quickly B. the cost of the Global Positioning System must be very high C. there are also some disadvantages of the Global Positioning System D. nothing can be done to improve the air traffic condition C Thirteen vehicles lined up last March to race across the Mojave Desert, seeking a million in prize money. To win, they had to finish the 142-mile race in less than 10 hours. Teams and watchers knew there might be no winner at all, because these vehicles were missing a key part —drivers. DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, organized the race as part of a push to develop robotic vehicles for future battlefields. But the Grand Challenge, as it was called, just proved how difficult it is to get a car to speed across an unfamiliar desert without human guidance. One had its brake lock up in the starting area, Another began by throwing itself onto a wall. Another got tied up by bushes near the road after 1.9 miles. One turned upside down. One took off in entirely the wrong direction and had to be disabled by remote (远距离的 ) consol. One went a little more than a mile and rushed into a fence; another managed to go for six miles but stuck on a rock. The “winner, ” if there was any, reached 7.8 miles before it ran into a long, narrow hole, and the front wheels caught on fire. “You get a lot of respect for natural abilities of the living things, ” says Reinhold Behringer, who helped design two of the ear-size vehicles for a company called Sci-Autonics, “Even ants can do all these tasks effortlessly. It ’s very hard for us to put these abilities into our machines. ” The robotic vehicles, though with necessary modern equipment such as advanced computers and GPS guidance, had trouble figuring out fast enough the blocks ahead that a two-year-old human recognizes immediately. Sure, that very young child, who has just only learned to walk, may not think to wipe apple juice off her face, but she already knows that when there ’s a cookie in the kitchen she has to climb up the table, and that when she gets to the cookie it will taste good. She is more advanced, even months old, than any machine humans have designed. 36. Watchers doubted if any of the vehicles could finish the race because ______. A. they did not have any human guidance B. the road was not familiar to the drivers C. the distance was too long for the vehicles D. the prize money was unattractive to the drivers 37. DARPA organized the race in order to ______. A. raise money for producing more robotic vehicles B. push the development of vehicle industry C. train more people to drive in the desert D. improve the vehicles for future wars 38. From the passage we know “robotic vehicles ” are a kind of machines that ______. A. can do effortlessly whatever tasks living things can B. can take part in a race across 142 miles with a time limit C. can show off their ability to turn themselves upside down D. can move from place to 101ace without being driven by human beings 39. In the race, the greatest distance one robotic vehicle covered was . A. about eight miles B. six miles C. almost two miles D. about one mile 40. In the last paragraph, the writer implies that there is a long way to go . A. for a robotic vehicle to finish a 142-mile race without any difficulties B. for a little child who has just learned to walk to reach the cookie on the table C. for a robotic vehicle to deal with a simple problem that a little child can solve D. for a little child to understand the importance of wiping apple juice off its face D At the beginning of the 20th century there were more than a million lions worldwide. Today there are less than 30,000 in the wild. The remaining lions are increasingly threatened by habitat loss, hunting and activities to protect farms and cattle. For generations, Masai tribesmen on the large African plains in southeastern Kenya have hunted lions — to protect their farms and cattle. Today they celebrate the lions ’ life. Noah is an elder in the Masai community. “We have decided as a community of the Masai to lay down our spears, and there will be no more killing of lions in our community. ” He is part of a group of Masai visiting the United States promoting the Predator ( 捕食性动物 ) Compensation Program. Conservation International ’s Frank Hawkins explains, “The Masai have been living with wildlife for many generations and it has been a conflicting relationship in many ways. They compete with the animals for food as lions eat the ir cattle. We’re trying to find ways in which the wildlife will become something useful to them. ” They had the Predator Compensation Fund founded in 2003. After much discussion, a group of Masai farmers agreed to protect lions. In turn, if lions or other predators kill their cattle, the Masai owner will be paid market value for the dead animals from the fund. One man said that in the past, when a lion killed cattle, they killed it on the spot. And now, after the start of the program, the Masai see the lion population growing. And they often succeed, at least in the short run, despite of themselves. But depending on luck isn ’t a good idea – as the Chinese proverb goes, “Man who waits for roast duck to fly into mouth must wait very long time. ” The vast majority of what we call “luck ” is the result of vision and purpose, hard work and passion. As anot her saying goes, “The harder I work, the more luck I have. ” Successful people work hard to put themselves into a position where good fortune can find them. The harder a manager works at developing people, the luckier she will be in having a skilled and motivated staff. The harder a salesperson works at satisfying customers, the luckier he will be at gaining referrals. The harder a couple works at it, the luckier they are at having a great relationship. All that success requires is a strong vision, hard work, being passionate about goals, building relationships, constantly seeking to improve, self discipline and taking smart risks. Beyond that, it ’s simply luck. Gathering at the gate of our school early in the morning , all of us started off at seven, but soon it began to rain lightly. We kept on riding for an hour before we reached the foot of the mountain. When the drizzle stopped, we began to climb the mountain and very soon we reached the top of the mountain. How beautiful it was when we looked at the view from the top, where we ran, sang, jumped, played chess, had the pictures taken , had lunch, and we all had a very good time. After lunch we went down the mountain, and we got home at four, tired out. 第二节:读写任务 ( 共 1 小题 , 满分 25 分) If a person wants to succeed, he can just hope that luck will help him. Luck, however, will never help those to succeed if they are lazy and lack responsibility. We students can really learn a lot from reading this passage. Because nowadays, it is generally believed among some people that success comes from luck. They believe it in love, in examinations, and even in promotion. For instance, when some of them don’t get good marks in entrance examinations or fail to be enrolled by a key university, they will attribute it to bad luck. However, others believe in themselves. They are working hard and trying their best to achieve what they want. Although they may fail sometimes, they don ’t give up, for they believe that luck can only help those who are hard working, passionate about goals, constantly seeking to improve and self disciplined and one ’s life lies in his own hand. As to me, I am in favor of the latter opinion. Luck doesn’t come alone. It goes hand in hand with hard work and knowledge.查看更多
