B If humans were truly at home under the light of the moon and stars, we would go in darkness happily, the midnight world as visible to us as it is to the vast number of nocturnal (夜间活动的) species on this planet. Instead, we are diurnal creatures, with eyes adapted to living in the sun’s light. This is a basic evolutionary fact, even though most of us don’t think of ourselves as diurnal beings. Yet it’s the only way to explain what we’ve done to the night: We’ve engineered it to receive us by filling it with light. The benefits of this kind of engineering come with consequences — called light pollution — whose effects scientists are only now beginning to study. Light pollution is largely the result of bad lighting design, which allows artificial light to shine outward and upward into the sky. Ill-designed lighting washes out the darkness of night and completely changes the light levels — and light rhythms — to which many forms of life, including, ourselves, have adapted. Wherever human light spills into the natural world, some aspect of life is affected. In most cities the sky looks as though it has been emptied of stars, leaving behind a vacant haze (霾) that mirrors our fear of the dark. We’ve grown so used to this orange haze that the original glory of an unlit night — dark enough for the planet Venus to throw shadow on Earth — is wholly beyond our experience, beyond memory almost. We’ve lit up the night as if it were an unoccupied country, when nothing could be further from the truth. Among mammals alone, the number of nocturnal species is astonishing. Light is a powerful biological force, and on many species it acts as a magnet (磁铁). The effect is so powerful that scientists speak of songbirds and seabirds being “captured” by searchlights on land or by the light from gas flares on marine oil platforms. Migrating at night, birds tend to collide with brightly lit tall buildings. Frogs living near brightly lit highways suffer nocturnal light levels that are as much as a million times brighter than normal, throwing nearly every aspect of their behavior out of joint, including their nighttime breeding choruses. Humans are no less trapped by light pollution than the frogs. Like most other creatures, we do need darkness. Darkness is as essential to our biological welfare, to our internal clockwork, as light itself. Living in a glare of our making, we have cut ourselves off from our evolutionary and cultural heritage — the light of the stars and the rhythms of day and night. In a very real sense, light pollution causes us to lose sight of our true place in the universe, to forget the scale of our being, which is best measured against the dimensions of a deep night with the Milky Way — the edge of our galaxy — arching overhead. 24. According to the passage, human being ________. A. prefer to live in the darkness B. are used to living in the day light C. were curious about the midnight world D. had to stay at home with the light of the moon 25. What does “it” (Paragraph 1) most probably refer to? A. The night. B. The moon. C. The sky. D. The planet. 26. The writer mentions birds and frogs to ________. A. provide examples of animal protection B. show how light pollution affects animals C. compare the living habits of both species D. explain why the number of certain species has declined 27. It is implied in the last paragraph that ________. A. light pollution dose harm to the eyesight of animals B. light pollution has destroyed some of the world heritages C. human beings cannot go to the outer space [来源:Zxxk.Com] D. human beings should reflect on their position in the universe C A small insect is gettinga lot of attention in the United States. The rusty patched bumblebee (大黄蜂) is the first of its species to be declared endangered in the lower 48 states — meaning every state except Alaska and Hawaii. The rusty patched bumblebee is named for a rust-colored line on its back. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this month it was adding the bee to its endangered species list. The insects are “on the brink of extinction,” according to the service. It said the bees were once found in 28 states. But there now are only small populations remaining in 13 states. The government agency will make a plan to help the dying bees recover. The agency said that such a plan might help other insects, like butterflies. U. S. officials think land owners can take small steps to help the rusty patched bumblebee. They say land owners can be friendlier towards bees by using native plants in their gardens. The insects directly fertilize many kinds of fruit and vegetable crops. And they fertilize grain crops used to feed cattle and milk cows. It costs billions of dollars to duplicate the job the bees do for free. Land owners are also being urged to cut back on their use of pesticide products. The officials also suggest that gardeners leave their plants alone at the end of the summer instead of cutting them. That way, the bees will have a place to live over the winter. The Fish and Wildlife Service says the rusty patched bumblebee was added to the endangered species list partly because of habitat loss. Other reasons were disease, pesticides and climate change. Officials are worried that other bees will suffer, too. Another species of bees in Hawaii is also endangered. 28. How many states declared the rusty patched bumblebee endangered? A. 13. B. 48. C. 28. D. 50. 29. Which one is harmful to the rusty patched bumblebee? A. Planting native plants. B. Reducing the use of pesticide products. [来源:学科网] C. Leaving plants alone. D. Cutting out plants regularly. 30. What can we know about the rusty patched bumblebee according to the text? A. All the states declared it as endangered species. B. It is named for a rust-colored line on its belly. C. It is beneficial to land owners. D. It is endangered mainly because of habitat loss. 31. What’s the best title for the passage? A. Bumblebee added to U. S. endangered species list B. Why is bumblebee on the brink of extinction C. Take steps to help bumblebee D. The benefits of protecting bumblebee D Have you ever heard a rumor spread around by students at your school? Rumors, like fake news, can often misinform individuals and lead them to believe false information. In an attempt to settle this problem, the country of Singapore has passed a bill that bans companies and individuals from publishing false information online. This law, known as The Protection From Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill, has caused a public outcry (强烈的抗议), as the government has been given the power to remove content that it considers inaccurate or against the public’s interest. Since Singapore’s citizens are part of different racial and religious groups, the government fears that rumors or fake news can increase tensions within an already small country. With the new law coming into effect, Singapore’s government now has the authority to monitor news sites, social media platforms, and other databases of information to determine whether the content is falsified. The government can order for the removal of fake news, and publishers of this information can receive prison time and fines up to one million Singapore dollars! Critics fear that the bill threatens their freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Since national issues and world news are generally discussed on online platforms, many are concerned that this new bill will prevent individuals from talking freely and having healthy conversations. Several companies, including Google, Facebook, and Twitter, have offices situated in Singapore, meaning that the new law will affect their company operations. Social media companies in Singapore could face a decline in activity, as users may fear posting their opinions and being punished by the government. Others are concerned that the law does not clearly state what a “false statement” is. Such an ambiguity might allow the government to misuse their power, even though the intention is to curtail the mow of false information and rumors throughout Singapore. This law does give rise to several concerns related to freedom and privacy and it will be interesting to see what Singapore’s government will do to deal with this problem. 32. Why are some people against the bill? A. They think the bill can’t get rid of fake news. B. They belong to different racial and religious groups. C. They think their freedom of speech may be harmed. D. They don’t want to increase tensions in their country. 33. What does the government have the right to do under the new law? A. Punish publishers of fake news. B. Monitor telephone conversations. C. Prohibit certain people from going online. D. Fine fake-news makers any amount of money. 34. How will the new law affect social media companies in Singapore? A. Their users’ privacy may be disturbed. B. Their income will increase very slowly. C. Their illegal activities will come to light. D. Their social media may become less active. 35. What does the underlined word in paragraph 8 probably mean? A. prove B. accelerate C. promote D. decrease 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据文章内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As we can see, everyone seems to rush in their life, but you don’t have to be like that. You can be different. You can walk instead of driving in rush hour traffic. You can limit your time spent on your mobile phone, and if necessary, power it off. Your environment doesn’t control your life — you do. I’m not going to give you a step-by-step guide to moving slower. 36 Try to do less. Cut back on your projects, on your task list, on how much you try to do each day. Concentrate not on quantity but on quality. 37 Save smaller, routine tasks for later in the day, but give yourself time to focus. Have fewer meetings. 38 And they eat into your day, forcing you to squeeze the things you really need to do into small windows, and making you rush. Try to have blocks of time with no interruptions, so you don’t have to rush from one meeting to another. 39 When you do the important things with focus, without rush, there will be things that get pushed back, and that don’t get done. And you need to ask yourself: how necessary are these things? What would happen if I stopped doing them? Practice being comfortable with doing nothing. One thing I’ve noticed is that when people have to wait, they become impatient or uncomfortable. They want their mobile device because standing and waiting is a waste of time. Instead, try just sitting there, looking around, soaking in your surroundings. Try standing in line and just listening to people around you. 40 . Try these things out. Life is better when unrushed. A. Start to put off or cancel the unnecessary. B. Meetings are usually a “big waste of time”. C. Avoid rushing to appointments or other places. D. It takes practice, but you’ll do it with a smile after a while. E. The world likely won’t end if you don’t pass one of the examinations. F. Pick no more than three important things or just even one, and work on those first. G. But here are some things to consider and perhaps adopt, if they work for your life. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 完型填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Around Thanksgiving, I flew to visit my family.
