When I mixed some powder together, they exploded. Molten liquid hit me in the face, but I felt no pain. I vividly remember standing there in a state of calm. I thought I was in a dream, but however hard I struggled to swim to the surface of consciousness, I couldn’t wake up. I didn’t understand how terrifying it was until I heard people saying, " Who’s that?" That’s when I knew I was unrecognizable. I was taken to hospital, but the doctors didn’t know what to do with me. Later I was flown to Houston for surgery. Between the ages of 13 and 16, I had 40 operations. As each operation came and went, my vision would come back, then fade again. Eventually, it faded completely and I had what was left of my eyes removed for cosmetic reasons. 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 - 6 - Since then, I have lived in total darkness. Most blind people, even if they don’t have any sight they’re aware of, are still able to sense light. That gives them a sense of day and night. But not me. I absolutely lost that sense of time passing. For many years, I felt my sight loss darkening my life like the loss of my parents from which I would never recover. But when I was in my 40s, I realized I had to find a way to live. I trained to become a counselor, and that has helped me see my experiences in a different way. I can’t fix people’s broken lives — just like I can’t fix my sight — but I can help them find a way to manage. Sometimes it feels as if all the struggles and negative experiences I’ve lived through were in fact a kind of preparation for helping others to make their own way towards the light. 25. How did the writer feel when the mixed powder exploded? A. Painful. B. Frightened. C. Calm. D. Desperate. 26. What can we know about the writer? A. She recovered her sight at last. B. She just has slight sense of sight. C. She is now living a meaningful life. D. She received 40 operations in 28 years. 27. What is the passage mainly about? A. Telling her own experience. B. Encouraging the blind to cheer up. C. Calling on people to care for the blind. D. Warning students doing experiments is dangerous. C Every year, hundreds of millions of Monarch Butterflies(黑脉金斑蝶) from Canada and the United States journey as far as 2, 500 miles to the forests of Michoacan, Mexico, a place which has the world’s largest insect migration(迁移). It’s such a breathtaking sight, but as always, human greed is threatening to destroy it. The Monarch Butterflies start to arrive in Michoacan in late October to make their winter home in the trees high up in the mountains of the natural reserve. Once there, 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 - 7 - they gather together in large masses. These masses often become so heavy that they cause tree branches to bend or even break. But there’s a purpose of all these massing — it allows the butterflies to survive in the low nighttime temperatures at these high altitudes. The Michoacan Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is most impressive during the months of February and March, just before the winged insects begin their long journey home. Mexico’s Butterfly Forest is a shelter protected by law, and one of the country’s most popular sights, but that hasn’t stopped people from slowly but steadily destroying it. Illegal woodcutting in the heart of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve has been a longstanding problem, but criminals are rarely brought to justice. They are often set free after paying some money. Just last month, an even greater threat rose in Michoacan’s butterfly home. The country’s largest mining corporation gained the right to reopen an old mine in the heart of the monarch reserve. Experts believe that if the mine is reopened, it will likely spell the end of this magical place. And as if all this wasn’t bad enough, the increasing use of herbicides(除草 剂) in the American corn belt has led to the decrease of a plant which is essential to the monarchs’ development from egg into butterfly. 28. When do the Monarch Butterflies fly back to Canada? A. In January. B. In March. C. In October. D. In December. 29. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. The weather. B. The reserve. C. The massing. D. The forest. 30. What can we know about the protection of Monarch Butterflies in Mexico? A. It is very satisfying. B. It should be strengthened. C. It cost the government a lot. D. It has saved many butterflies. 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 - 8 - 31. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs? A. Monarch Butterflies have a worrying future. B. America has many mines waiting for exploration. C. Monarch Butterflies live in the centre of an old mine. D. The use of herbicides will let Monarch Butterflies lay fewer eggs. D University graduates Mallorie Brodie and Lauren Hasegawa, who invented a smartphone app that tracks construction defects for commercial builders, had a tiger by the tail. Bridgit, which they founded in 2012, launched a cloud-based communications platform that helped manage defects on construction sites, which can delay projects and result in costly repairs if left unchecked. The smartphone application lets site supervisors take photos of cracks or damaged paint, share them with employees and track the problems to solution. More than 600 subcontractors used the pilot version in many building sites before the commercial version, called Closeout, officially launched. Feedback(反馈)was so good that they began to wonder: Why limit their invention to a specific industry? Why not turn it into some kind of a handy tool for consumers too? This became their dilemma. In other words, should they stay the course or look for wider applications of their app? The experts polled all agreed Bridgit should stay focused on its original goal. Ms. Hasegawa and Ms. Brodie took that advice. As more business customers signed on, it became clear that they made the right decision. Since then, the company’s growth has been rapid. Earlier this year, Bridgit launched Closeout ,which is designed so that even the least tech-savvy can use it easily. Today, the app is being used on sites across Canada and the United States and even by top general contractors. In October, Bridgit was named to the Canadian Innovation Exchange’s top 20 list of Canada’s most innovative ( 创 新 的 ) companies working in digital media and information and communication technology . 只有比别人更早、更勤奋地努力,才能尝到成功的滋味。 - 9 - But Ms. Hasegawa and Ms. Brodie are not resting on their glories. They have also been collecting feedback on Closeout from customers, and they’ll launch a new version in the spring. It will target not only general contractors but developers and building owners, too. 32. What does the underlined word "defects" in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Style. B. Process. C. Drawback. D. Material. 33. What did the two graduates decide to do when the pilot version was well received? A. Turn to the ordinary consumer market. B. Look for wider applications of their app. C. Turn it into a widely-used tool for consumers. D. Continue centering on the development in construction industry. 34. Who could be their potential customers? A. Smartphone users. B. Architects. C. Computer programmers. D. Photographers. 35. Which of the following might be the best title? A. Graduates’ smartphone application takes off B. Graduates’ smartphone application has a bright future C. But how? 36 Do What You Need to Do. 37 You ought not to avoid tough projects or hard conversions until the last moment.
