1 Module 1 Life in the Future Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading-Pre-reading Let us suppose it is now about A.D. 2100. Let's make believe(假装,假扮) it is about eighty years from now. Of course, things have changed and life is very different. Voyages to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it was for the people in 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic (风景优美的) spots on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels are airconditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at leastone picture window. Everything imaginable (可以想象的) is provided for entertainment of young and old. What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven't yet started to take on heir (继承) supply of energy directly as electrical current or as nuclear power (核能). They may some day. But many foods now come in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainlyfrom green plants. Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then. 2 People are now largely vegetarians (素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the number of animals decreases. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier both in our bodies and in our minds, and we know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more. Such would be our life in 2100. Section_Ⅰ Introduction_&_Reading_—_Prereading [原文呈现] The City of the Future What will the city of the future look like ① ? No one knows for sure ② , and making predictions ③ is arisky ④ business. But one thing is certain — they are going to get bigger before they get smaller. In the future, care⑤ for the environment will become very important ⑥as earth's natural resources⑦run out⑧. We will use lots of recycled materials ⑨ , such as ⑩ plastic, aluminium, steel, glass, wood and paper, and we will waste fewer natural resources. We will also have to rely more on⑪ alternative⑫ energy, such as solar⑬ and wind power. All this seems certain, but there are plenty of⑭ things about city life in the future which are not certain. To find out what young people think about the future of urban⑮ life⑯, a teacher at a university in Texas in the United States asked his students to think how they would run⑰ a city of 50,000 people in the year 2025. Here are some of the ideas they had: Garbage ships To get rid of⑱ garbage problems⑲, the city willload⑳ huge spaceships with waste materials and send them towards○21 the sun, preventing landfill○22 and environmental problems○23. Batman Nets Police will arrest○24criminals○25 by firing○26 nets instead of○27 guns. Then it springs up, almost lifelike, and folds into moveable parts much like Japanese paper origami (折纸) art. And then it crawls away. This new kind of robot could someday be used in space exploration, to slide into collapsed building sites to aid search and rescue, or to speed up production on assembly lines, experts said Thursday. While this particular machine's march to the world market is still years away, the report in the journal Science said the latest advances open the way to a new frontier in personalized robotics. Not only is the material cheap — it cost just $100 — it could be easily reprogrammed from one task to another, said Sam Felton, a researcher at Harvard 10 University's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “In the same way that if you have a Word document and you want to change few words, you just reprint it at your home computer, you could take a robot's digital plan, change a few things and reprint it,” Felton told reporters. The thin robot is built of layers, including paper, a middle layer of copper into a network of electrical leads, and an outer layer of shapememory polymer (聚 合物) that folds when heated. Once the batteries and motor are activated (激活), the robot folds itself much like a child's Transformer toy, and moves away like a crab. Other potential uses could include selfassembling furniture,or even shelters that build themselves in disaster zones. “The exciting thing here is that you create this device that has computation (估算) put in the flat, printed version,” explained Daniela Rus, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “And when these devices lift up from the ground into the third dimension (维度), they do it in a thoughtful way.” 1.The author introduces the topic of the text by ________. Geographers predict that within the next eighty years, current world climate zones could shift and some could completely disappear. Polar regions will get colder while tropical regions will get even hotter, forcing animals to migrate (迁徙) north. Climate changes like these could lead to the spread of diseases. Tropical storms and hurricanes will not only increase but may also become more intense. If the changes come too quickly, animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could disappear. According to ScienceDalily, a new study predicts that by the year 2100, many of today's familiar climates will be replaced by climates unknown in today's world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of these farreaching consequences for the whole world. The planet itself has been showing signs of change. In 2004, a serious tsunami created by a major earthquake killed thousands in Sumatra and in 2008, thousands died in China because of another severe earthquake. Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was devastated in 2010 by yet another massive earthquake. Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously thought. At this point, it doesn't matter what is causing it, but rather, what can be done about it. What's more, our world is getting more and more unstable every year. There is war and threat of war everywhere. Natural disasters are becoming more 12 frequent and serious. However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection between this. No one knows anything for sure at this point because there is simply not enough data. 5.What is the major function of Paragraph 1? A.To arouse the reader's concern. B.To introduce the theme of the whole passage. C.To summarize the whole passage. D.To state how climate changes. 6.What is the author's purpose in using the examples of earthquakes? A.To show major changes are taking place on the planet. B.To remind people to prevent future earthquakes. C.To show the damage earthquakes caused. D.To tell us more earthquakes will happen in the future. 根据第三段第三句“The planet itself has been showing signs of change.” 故选 A项。 7.Which of the following is NOT true of climate changes effects? A.Animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could disappear. B.It could lead to the spread of diseases. C.Current world climate zones could shift and completely disappear. D.Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious. 8.What can be inferred from the passage? A.Animals and plants won't die out as long as climate changes slowly. B.There's enough data for us to predict the future of climate change. 13 C.The world is getting more unstable because of animal migration. D.The earth is not the only planet that is experiencing climate change. 根据最后一段第一句“However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection between this.” C Futurologists (未来学家) predict that life will probably be very different in 2050 in all the fields of activity, from entertainment to technology. First of all, it seems that TV channels will have disappeared by 2050. Instead, people will choose a programme from a “menu” (菜单) and a computer will send the programme directly to the television. Today, we can use the World Wide Web to read newspaper stories and see pictures on a computer thousands of kilometers away. By 2050, music, films, programmes, newspapers and books will come to us by computer. We will also be able to see, smell and touch the things that we see on television. In transport, cars will run on new, clean “gas” and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed of the car and there won't be any accidents. Today, many cars have computers that tell drivers exactly where they are. By 2050, the computer will control the car and drive it to where you want to go. Space planes will fly all over the world and people will fly from Los Angels to Tokyo in just two hours. In technology, robots will have replaced people in factories. Many factories already use robots. Big companies prefer robots — they do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and they work 24 hours a day. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere — in factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes. Last but not least, medicine technology will have conquered many diseases. By 2050, we will be able to help blind and deaf people see again and hear again. Scientists will be able to produce clones (克隆) of people and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have. 9.What is NOT true about television by 2050 according to this passage? A.One will be able to smell the food on television. 14 B.One can have a try of the food you see on television. C.There will be no channels for us to choose programmes. D.Televisions will be completely controlled by computers. 10.What can be the development of transport that benefits people most by 2050? A.Cars will go at a very high speed on their own. B.Space planes will fly all over the world in a short time. C.There will be less pollution and no car accidents. D.Computers will tell people where they are going. 文章第二段前两句提及“clean gas”与“there won't be any accidents”,因此 C 项正确。 11.It can be implied in the passage that by 2050 ________. A.people will live more healthily and longer B.computer will control the speed of cars C.people can read newspapers through a computer D.there will be no people working in factories 解析:选A 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段到2050年前世界医药的发展情况(medicine technology will have conquered many diseases)判断,未来人们会更健康、更长寿。 12.What is the author's attitude towards people's life in future? A.Doubtful. B.Sad. C.Happy. D.Worried. Many people around the world suffer from stress in modern times. Sometimes stress is a temporary condition or related to one's environment, and at other times it is more severe, perhaps requiring professional treatment. __1__ Accept your stress. __2__ But it means that you're aware of what is causing your stress and what you need to avoid. Accepting does not mean ignoring it, but rather that you understand the origin of your stress. Realize that your stress is a healthy response to stimuli (刺激物). So it can be dealt with in a proper way. __3__ Sometimes, a stressful situation is just a matter of perspective. 15 of focusing on the negatives and the problems that are causing your stress, concentrate on the positives. When you change your viewpoint, you can change your level of stress altogether. Do your best to see things in a positive light, and avoid cynicism (愤世嫉俗) at all costs. __4__ Often times, stress arises from feeling overwhelmed. Use a planner to keep track of your “to do lists”. Being organized and getting your priorities (优先 事项) straight can help you break responsibilities down into manageable pieces and focus on the things that really matter to you. Staying on top of chores and errands will keep you in a positive mindset, and help you get more things done in the long run. Learn to say no. You cannot do everything you are asked. __5__ Indeed, the more you promise and don't deliver, the fewer people will think of you as being nice; rather, they'll consider you're not trustworthy, knowing that you'll drop the ball at the last minute. Instead, be wise and learn to say no politely but firmly and always know there isn't a chance at all that you'll get the thing done. A.Be better organized. B.Think about your problems in a different way. C.You should be objective when facing stress. D.It may seem unwise to admit your stress. E.Why do you keep pretending that you can? F.The following tips can help you reduce stress. G.You turn to someone else for help when necessary. 3.选 B 根据本段中的“When you change your viewpoint, you can change your level of stress altogether.”
