One night, his elder son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal(肠道) disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night. Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol to help, In time Al became an alcoholic. As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed-his land, house etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al's death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure!” As time went by, I began to reevaluate my earlier rough judgment. I knew Al's now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring and most loving men I have ever known, I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere. I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly. “As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘I love you, son.” Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind and loving father, and left behind his best love. 21. Why did Al’s elder son die? A. He drank too much alcohol B. Amazon has its own range of Kindle e-book readers, which have sold well in the United States. The first Kindle device appeared in the UK last October, but British consumers have been slower to embrace the digital reading revolution. The online seller has attempted to expand the presence of its Kindle brand by making the software for downloading and reading electronic books available on a variety o£ other platforms, such as the iPhone and Windows-based PCs, rather than just Kindle devices. “Kindle for Mac is the perfect companion application for customers who own a Kindle or Kindle DX, " said Jay Marine, director of Amazon's Kindle division. “For those customers around the world who don, t yet have a Kindle, Kindle for Mac is a great way' to instantly access and read the most popular new releases as well as their old favourites.” The Kindle for Mac application will synchronise(使同步)books and bookmarks between a Mac and a Kindle device. Amazon said it would be adding more features to the software in the coming months, including the ability to search the text of a book and create “notes”一 highlights and annotations. Amazon also said that it would develop a version of its existing iPhone Kindle app for the iPad, but privately there are concerns that Apple’s move into the e-book market, and the addition of an e-book store to the existing Apple iTunes and App Store ecosystem could steal customers from the Kindle store. 25. C Some people have travelled to Canada while others may have just heard of it. As is known to all, the Canadian red and white maple leaf flag is officially called The National Flag of Canada. The Canadian flag shows a stylized red maple leaf with 11 points on a white background, with red borders down each side. The Canadian flag is twice as long as its width. The white square containing the red maple leaf is the same width as the flag. Canada is a very large country, too. It is the second largest country in the world. By contrast, it has a very small population. There are only about 29 million people there. Most Canadians are of British or French origin, and French is an official language as well as English. About 45 % of the people are of British origin — that is, they or their parents or grandparents, etc, come from Britain. Nearly 30 % are of French origin. Most of the French-Canadians live in the province of Quebec. Over the years people have come to live in Canada from many countries in the world. They are mostly from European countries and also from China, as well as other Asian countries. However, Canada was not an empty country when the Europeans began to arrive. Canadian-Indian lived along the coast, by the rivers and lakes and in forests. Today there are only 350,000 Canadian-Indians in the whole country, with their own language. In the far north live the Inuits. There are only 27,000 Canadian-Inuits. Their life is hard in such a harsh climate. 29. What is the population of Quebec? A. More than 29,000,000 B. About 30% of the total population C. Over 45% of the total population D. Less than 30% of the French-Canadians 30. Which of the following stands for Canada? 31. Which of the following is TRUE according to this passage? A. The Canadian flag is twice as wide as its length B. Most Indians are now forced to live along the coast C. Nowadays Inuit still have difficult living conditions D. Nobody existed when the Europeans began to arrive in Canada D Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance(pocketmoney). The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly. The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance. In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget(预算). Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics. Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works. Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it. Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. You have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowance can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children and teenagers learn about personal finance. A savings account is an excellent way to learn about the power of compound interest. Compounding works by paying interest. So, for example, one dollar invested at two percent interest for two years will earn two cents in the first year. The second year, the money will earn two percent of one dollar and two cents, and so on. That may not seem like a lot. But over time it adds up. 32. Parents give her children allowances in order to ______. A. show off their wealth of family B. let them make more money C. learn the value of money D. help children manage family finance 33. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The time to give allowances B. The way to spend allowances C. The amount of allowances given to children D. Considerations taken to give allowances 34. Why are parents advised to offer young children allowances strictly as planned? A. To help children learn to make a budget B. To have children save money for larger costs C. To let children make fewer mistakes D. To give them more allowances next time 35. What does the author intend to tell me readers? A. The methods of limiting allowances B. The advice on a better family budget C. Teaching children to use allowances wisely D. The university admissions office considers whether a student has taken courses in high school that have prepared him or her for more difficult coursework. A student’s high school GPA is also considered. 36 Each letter grade is assigned a number or points: A = 4 points, B=3 , C=2, D=1 and F=0 point. A GPA is calculated by adding all of the points earned for each course grade and dividing the total points by the total number of courses taken. 37 Universities prefer to see applications from high school students who have engaged in activities in their spare time, such as clubs, athletic teams and student government. 38 Most students in the US take the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT during their final year of high school. Each university sets a minimum SAT or ACT score that a student must achieve in order to be admitted. These are standardized quantitative examinations. The SAT tests critical reading, math and writing skills. 39 Students are often required to write an essay as part of the application process. 40 The applicants may also be required to have a personal interview with a representative from the admissions office. A. A student who fails a required course must repeat the course. B. A GPA is a figure representing a student’s accumulated grades. C. Each admissions office determines the length and content of the essay. D. For example, a GPA of 3.0 is a “B” average for all of the courses taken. E. A student graduates after he or she has successfully passed all the required courses. F. The ACT tests English, math, reading, science reasoning and optional writing. G. It’s noticeable that the air quality in cities is recently becoming worse and worse. Various causes contribute to this terrible situation. More people drive private cars and factories keep sending poisonous gases into the air. People’s health is harmed once they take in these gases, which may cause a series of diseases like lung cancer. To improve the situation, we should control the number of cars and prevent the factories pouring wastes casually. As students, we’d better walk or talk public means of transportation rather than take private cars and try our best to arouse people’s awareness of environmental protection. Thank you!
