Suddenly, dark clouds piled up overhead and rain began to fall, but strange to relate, several hundred yards ahead of me the sun shone brilliantly. Pedaling, however, as rapidly as I could, I found it impossible to get into the clear. The clouds with their rain kept advancing faster than I could race forward. I continued this unequal contest for an exhausting half hour, before realizing that I could not win my way to the bright area ahead of me. Then it dawned upon me that I was wasting my strength in unimportant hurry, while paying no attention to the landscape for the sake of which I was making the trip. The storm could not last forever and the discomfort was not unendurable. Indeed, there was much to look at which might otherwise have escaped me. As I gazed about with sharpened appreciation, I saw colors and lines that would have appeared differently under brilliant light. The rain mists which now crowned the wooded hills and the fresh clearness of the different greens were entrancing. My annoyance at the rain was gone and my eagerness to escape it vanished. It had provided me with a new view and helped me understand that the sources of beauty and satisfaction may be found close at hand within the range of one's own sensibilities. It made me think, then and later, about other matters to which this incident was related. It helped me realize that there is no sense in my attempting ever to flee from circumstances and conditions which cannot be avoided but which I might bravely meet and frequently mend and often turn to good account. I know that half the battle is won if I can face trouble with courage. It has become ever clearer to me that danger is far from disaster, that defeat may be the forerunner of final victory, and that, in the last analysis, all achievement is perilously fragile unless based on enduring principles of moral conduct. 26. When the rain began to fall, the author ________. A. rode as quickly as he could B. stopped to find a shelter C. continued his contest D. saw the sun shone brilliantly 27. What can we infer from Paragraph 2? A. The author paid no attention to the landscape at all. B. Some colors and lines suddenly appeared in the rain. C. The author realized he had ignored the purpose of his trip. D. Some views escaped and there was nothing to look at. 28. The underlined word “vanished” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______. A. disappeared B. reduced C. increased D. collected 29. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Defeat may be the forerunner of final victory. B. All achievement is fragile if we cannot endure it. C. Half the battle is won if we can face difficulty bravely. D. There is no sense to escape unavoidable conditions. 30. The passage is intended to _______. A. warn us the danger in the countryside B. tell us an adventurous bicycle trip C. show us how to avoid difficult conditions D. encourage us to face trouble bravely B What is your recovery rate? How long does it take you to recover from actions and behaviors that upset you? Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? The longer it takes you to recover, the more influence that incident has on your actions, and the less able you are to perform to your personal best. You are well aware that you need to exercise to keep the body fit and, no doubt, accept that a reasonable measure of health is the speed in which your heart and respiratory system recovers after exercise. Likewise the faster you let go of an issue that upsets you, the faster you return to a balance, the healthier you will be. The best example of this behavior is found with professional sportspeople. They know that the faster they can forget an incident or missed opportunity and get on with the game, the better their performance. Imagine yourself to be an actor in a play on the stage. Your aim is to play your part to the best of your ability. You have been given a script and at the end of each sentence is a full stop. Each time you get to the end of the sentence you start a new one and although the next sentence is related to the last it is not affected by it. Your job is to deliver each sentence to the best of your ability. Don’t live your life in the past! Stop the past from influencing your daily life. Don’t allow thoughts of the past to reduce your personal best. Stop the past from interfering with your life. Reflect on your recovery rate each day. Every day before you go to bed, look at your progress. Don’t lie in bed saying to you, “I did that wrong.” “I should have done better there.” Look at your day and note when you made an effort to place a full stop after an incident. This is a success. You are taking control of your life. Remember this is a step by step process. Your aim: reduce the time spent in recovery. 31. If a sportsman cannot forget an incident quickly, he is most likely to ______. A. get on with the game confidently B. give their best performance C. return to a balance soon D. give unsatisfied performance 32. According to Paragraph 3, an actor should deliver the script by _____. A. putting a full stop to each sentence he has seen B. starting a new sentence when finishing the last C. relating the next sentence to the last one D. trying his best to read the sentences aloud 33. Which statement is a correct way to reflect recovery rate? A. I felt ashamed for making a mistake. B. Nothing can be worse than losing face. C. It doesn’t matter and I will do it better. D. I got such a bad score in the math test. 34. What can be inferred from the passage? A. Faster recovery helps better performance. B. Recovery rate can reflect our health. C. It is not difficult to take control of life. D. Sportsmen and actors often recover faster. 35. What is the best title of this passage? A. Reflect on your life rate each day. B. Place a full stop to your recovery. C. Live your life in the present. D. Reduce your recovery time. C How does a doctor recognize the point where he is finally a “surgeon”? The answer, I concluded, was self-confidence. When you can say to yourself, “There is no surgical patient I cannot treat competently”--- then, and not until then, you are indeed a surgeon. I was nearing that point. Take, for example, the emergency situations that we encountered almost every night. The first few months of the year I had dreaded the ringing of the telephone. I knew it meant another critical decision to be made. Often, after I had told Walt or Larry what to do in a particular situation, I’d have trouble getting back to sleep. I’d review all the facts of the case and wonder if I hadn't made a poor decision. More than once after lying awake for an hour, I’d get out of bed, dress and drive to the hospital to see the patient myself. It was the only way I could find the peace of mind. Now, sleeping was no longer a problem. There were still situations in which I couldn’t be certain my decision had been the right one, but I had learned to accept this as a constant problem for a surgeon, and I could live with it. So, once I had made a considered decision, I no longer dwelt on it. Reviewing it wasn't going to help and I knew that with my knowledge and experience, any decision I’d made was bound to be a sound one. It was a nice feeling. In the operating room I was equally confident. I knew I had the knowledge, the skill, the experience to handle any surgical situation I'd ever encounter in practice. There were no more butterflies in my stomach when I opened up a chest. I knew that even if the case was one in which it was impossible to anticipate the problem in advance, I could handle whatever l found. Conceit is what a surgeon needs to encourage himself when he’s bothered by the doubts and uncertainties that are part of the practice of medicine. He has to feel that he’s as good as and probably better than any other surgeon in the world. Call it conceit --- call it self-confidence; whatever it was, I had it. 36. A real surgeon will ________. A. treat all the patients competently B. feel very confident in his ability C. have no doubts and uncertainties D. always make right surgical decisions 37. The author used to fear the ringing of the telephone because______. A. he had to made another fateful decision B. he had trouble in getting back to sleep C. he had to review all the facts of the case D. he had made a poor decision before 38. After making a careful decision, the author ______. A. always thought about it B. no longer reviewed it C. often regretted making it D. seldom felt nice of it 39. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 means that _______. A. the author felt comfortable when doing an operation B. the author had eaten nothing before opening a chest C. the author felt confident when doing an operation D. the author saw no butterfly before opening a chest 40. Which of the following best describes the author? A. sensitive and considerate B. experienced and considerate C. sensitive and confident D. experienced and confident D SOCHI, RUSSIA — Organizers at the Winter Olympics in Sochi hope the Games will inspire healthy living in Russia - a country that suffers from high rates of premature deaths due to so-called “lifestyle” factors. Government figures show 400,000 people a year die of smoking-related diseases, while alcohol consumption has long been a problem. Across Russia, 60 percent of men and around 25 percent of women smoke. On top of that, studies suggest one in eight deaths are related to high consumption of alcohol, especially vodka. Olympic volunteer and ex-smoker Andrei Prokopyev hopes to be part of the solution. “In Russia we have different kinds of problems. Some of them are common diseases like around the world. But most of the problems are smoking, drinking alcohol, and many other problems of addiction,” said Prokopyev. Professionals measure eight key health statistics, from blood pressure to hand strength, which are used to produce a “biological age” --- a measure of how old your body really is. Galina has a bio-age of 69, but she's only 62-years-old. “I'm a bit upset because my bio-age is higher than my real age. But I think this idea is really useful and they have given me good advice on how to live healthier,” said Galina. Many people who have come here to this ‘classroom’ of healthy living say they have been inspired by the Winter Olympics in Sochi, and they want to live healthier lifestyles to emulate their Russia heroes. “I'm really enjoying the Olympic Games and I want to become healthier, because I want to be like those sportsmen,” said visitor to Sochi Konstantin Kaznov. In the Olympic Park, smoking is banned except for a few designated areas. In June, a new law will come into effect across Russia banning smoking in bars, restaurants and shops. The government has also increased the price of vodka to stem alcoholism. Volunteer Andrei Prokopyev is optimistic. “Olympic, it is new start for many people. Quit cigarette and also thinking about their health,” he said. There may be a long way to go - but volunteers in Sochi believe the Winter Olympics could inspire many Russians to embrace the healthy spirit. 41. What can NOT be inferred about Prokopyev? A. He has already quit smoking. B. He volunteered in the Olympics C. He used to drink and smoke a lot. D. He wants to inspire healthy lifestyles 42. What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. The “bio-age” should exceed the real age. B. Galina is healthier than she expected. C. The “bio-age” is useful in living healthier. D. Galina doesn’t care about the results. 43. Many people want to live a healthier life because _______. A. they want to take part in the Olympics B. they want to follow their Russia heroes C. they enjoy the Sochi Olympic Games D. they feel sick in their daily exercises 44. The Russian government did the following EXCEPT _______. A. made a new law to ban smoking B. did some researches on death causes C. increased the price of vodka D. banned smoking in the whole country 45. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The Winter Olympics are expected to inspire a healthy lifestyle in Russia. B. Russia suffers from a high rates of deaths caused by an unhealthy lifestyle C. Volunteers in Sochi are advocating a healthy lifestyle throughout Russia D. Russian government has decided to prevent people from an unhealthy lifestyle. 第二节 信息匹配(共5题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。请在答题卡上将对应题号的相应选项字母涂黑。 首先请阅读下列鲜花及相关介绍: A You can know my personal meaning from my names--- Bachelor Button; If you are among those singles who can’t get away from self-pity, don’t worry. A college student stayed in the lab all the time so as to graduate in time while a middle-aged worked all day long from dawn to dusk. Everyone has their dreams, but not all these dreams can come true. People give up their dreams for this or that reason. Many may submit to the difficulties in the hard struggle. Those whose dreams become true have at least one thing in common, that is, perseverance. My uncle is such an admirable person. My uncle had to walk for an hour to town to receive his middle school education. In the first year, he had ten peers. In junior three, however, he had to cover the long distance alone because the other nine fellows quitted school for the great hardships. But my uncle persevered and didn’t stop his pursuit of his dream and finally he was admitted to his dream university.. We are bound to meet challenges on our life journey. But as long as we hold a dream that can greatly motivate us, we will move forward. It is also advisable that we fulfill our dream by dividing it into small goals so that it may seem more accessible, which can help us persevere till the end. Hold fast to your dreams, no matter how big or small they are. The path to dreams may not be smooth and wide, even some sacrifices are needed, but hold on to the end, you, still find there is no greater happiness than making your dream come true.查看更多
