He asked if I would give him some money so he could get something to eat. I’d read the signs: “Don`t give money to panhandlers(乞丐)” So I shook my head and kept walking.‎ I wasn’t prepared for a reply, but with resignation, he said,“ really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!” But I kept on walking.‎ The incident bothered me for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and it wouldn’t have killed me to hand over a buck or two even if he had been lying. On a frigid, cold night, no less,I assumed(呈现) the worst of a fellow human being.‎ Flying back to Anchorage, I couldn`t help thinking of him. I tried to rationalize my failure to help by assuming government agencies, churches, and charities were there to feed him. Besides, you`re not supposed to give money to panhandlers.‎ Somewhere over Seattle, I started to write my weekly garden column for The Anchorage Daily News. Out of the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean`s Café, the soup kitchen in Anchorage, feeds hundreds of hungry Alaskans every day. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens dedicated to Bean`s? Dedicate a row and take it down to Bean`s. Clean and simple.‎ We didn’t keep records back then, but the idea began to take off. Folks would fax me or call when they book something in. Those who only grew flowers donated them. Food for the spirit. And salve for my conscience.‎ ‎21.Where did the story happen?‎ ‎ A. On the way to the hotel in washington‎,‎D.C.‎ ‎ B. On the way to the hotel in Anchorage. ‎ C. In the hotel in washington‎,‎D.C.‎ ‎ D. In the hotel in Anchorage. ‎ ‎22.Why didn’t the writer give money to the man?‎ ‎ A. He was kindless. B. He was lack of money ‎ C. He was busy. .D. He hardly believed the man.‎ ‎23.The meaning of The underline part “out of the blue” is _____.‎ A. Suddenly B. Luckily C. Finally D. Specially ‎24.How did the writer feel for the rest of the week?‎ A. calm. B. excited.‎ C. surprised. D. regret.‎ ‎25.What can we learn from this passage?‎ ‎ A. Never give money to panhandlers. B. We ‘d better plant a row for the hunger.‎ ‎ C. Only charities should help the hunger. D. Always give money to panhandlers.‎ C ‎(根据2014年下城区中考英语模拟试卷说明类文章改编)‎ Popeye the Sailor first became a popular cartoon in the 1930s. The sailor in that cartoon ate lots of spinach(菠菜) to make him strong. People watched him, and they began to buy and eat a lot more spinach. Popeye helped sell 33percent more spinach than before! Spinach became a necessary part of many people’s diets. Even some children who hated the taste began to eat the vegetable. ‎ Many people thought that the iron in spinach made Popeye strong, but this is not true. Spinach does not have any more iron than any other green vegetable. ‎ People only thought spinach had a lot of iron because the people who studied the food made a mistake. In the 1890s, a group of people studied what was inside vegetables. This group said that spinach had ten times more iron than it did. The group wrote the number wrong, and everyone accepted it.‎ Today, we know that the little iron there is in spinach can not make a difference in how strong a person is. However, spinach does have something else which the body needs---folic acid.‎ It is interesting to point out that folic acid can help make a person strong. Maybe it was really the folic acid that made Popeye strong all along.‎ ‎26.The best title for this reading passage is _______.‎ A. Popeye the Sailor B. The truth about spinach ‎ C. It is _____.‎ A. something in food B. a vegetable ‎ C. dangerous D. a certain kind of spinach ‎ 第二节:(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 很多人在谈话中喜欢引用名人的话,恰当引用名言能让你的表达增色不少。 I’m Michael, and I’m a science teacher at the Darwin School of Distance Education. We teach students aged 11-18. In many ways, teaching at a distance high school is just like teaching an ordinary high school. We have to read and mark a lot of homework, which the students hand in by mail. ‎ ‎ The biggest difference, I think, is the classroom. It’s a small room and there’s nobody in it except me. The other difference is that I give the classroom and do experiments in front of a camera. It seems strange at first, but it’s easier than teaching in front of a class of thirty kids. Another difference--- and this is the most difficult thing for me ---- is that I can’t see any of the students. They can see me, so I usually ask them questions during the lesson to make sure they’re listening! Actually, most of my students are great --- they listen carefully to the lessons, and they’re very good at working by themselves. Sometimes, we have problems with one or two students; they don’t do their coursework, but this doesn’t happen very often. In fact, students at a school of distance education work hard and often get good results ---better than a lot of students at a regular school. I believe if you pull together, you can do better next time.‎ Hope you’ll be happy as soon as possible.‎ Wang Tao ‎(82 words)‎ 评分标准 一、第1小题至第5小题,每题1分,不选、多选和错选均不给分。
