The Vascellaros—Frank, Amelia, 14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe, and 17-year-old Sam—all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.‎ ‎ “Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said. Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone, Frank spent closer to four hours on his phone—which came as a surprise to him. The children’s time varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well. ‎ ‎ Minneapolis-based Dr. Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up a lot among families. Lind Seal said many family members’ phone use has become problematic. ‎ ‎ “If we hear more than once, ‘Do you have to be on your phone right now? Can you please put your phone down? Did you hear what I said?’ it may be a sign that is negatively(消极地) influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.‎ ‎ Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down.‎ ‎ She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills. “What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems—when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people,” she said.‎ ‎9.Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Paragraph 5? Many experts have tried to make English easier for students to learn but they weren’t always successful.‎ ‎ In 1930, Professor CK Ogden of Cambridge University invented Basic English. It had only 850 words(and just eighteen verbs) and Ogden said most people could learn it in just thirty hours. The problem was that people who learned Basic English could write and say simple messages, but they couldn’t understand the answers in “real” English! It was also impossible to explain ‎ a word if it wasn’t in the Basic English word list. For example, if you wanted a watermelon, you asked for “a large green fruit with the form of an egg, which has a sweet red inside and a good taste”!‎ ‎ R.E. Zachrisson, a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling, so he invented a language called Anglic. Anglic was similar to English, but with much simpler spelling. “Father” became “faadher”, “new” became “nue” and “years” became “yeerz”. Unfortunately for some students of English, Anglic never became popular.‎ ‎ Even easier is the language which ships’ captains use: it’s called “Seaspeak”. Seaspeak uses a few simple phrases for every possible situation. In Seaspeak, for example, you don’t say, “I’m sorry. What did you say?” or “I didn’t understand. Can you repeat that?” It’s just “Say again.” No more grammar!‎ ‎ In the age of international communication through the Internet, a new form of English might appear. A large number of the world’s e-mails are in English and include examples of “NetLingo” like OIC (Oh, I see) and TTYL (Talk to you later). In another fifty years, English might not exist, we will probably all speak fluent Internetish!‎ ‎12.Who have tried to make English easier for students to learn?‎ ‎  ‎ ‎13.When did Basic English invent?‎ ‎ ‎ 5‎ ‎  ‎ ‎14.Why did R.E. Zachrisson invent Anglic?‎ ‎  ‎ ‎15.In Seaspeak, how do people say “I didn’t understand. Can you repeat that?”?‎ ‎  ‎ ‎16.What is the passage mainly about?‎ ‎  ‎ 5‎ ‎【参考答案】‎ Ⅰ.[主旨大意] 本文主要介绍了比尔·盖茨夫妇和世界上其他一些慈善基金会在帮助贫困地区孩子受教育、解决饥饿和人类健康问题等方面所进行的慈善活动。‎ ‎1.C 根据上文信息可知比尔·盖茨夫妇建立了慈善机构,此处自然可以推知,他们应该是捐出了很多钱。put away放好;clear away清除;give away捐赠;take away拿走。故选C。‎ ‎2.B 根据上文“The Gates feel that with success comes responsibility.”可知,盖茨夫妇认为成功总是伴随着责任,体现这一理念的应该是帮助他人。故选B。‎ ‎3.A 根据下文的“so they can go to school”可知,此处应该是学生。故选A。‎ ‎4.A 根据上文的“The foundation also provides money for medical research and…”可知,基金会为医学研究提供研究资金从而改善人们的健康。故选A。‎ ‎5.D 根据上文的“Another worry of Bill and Melinda Gates is hunger.”可以推断出下文的内容与饥饿有关。故选D。‎ ‎6.B “for them to hunger and poverty”是一个目的状语,意思是“为了可以 饥饿和贫穷”,根据上下文可知是帮助他们解决这些存在的问题。故选B。 ‎ ‎7.C 通过对上文的理解可知,尽管这些小基金会与盖茨夫妇的捐款数额相比相差甚远,但是也在起着很大的作用,所以从语气和理解上选择still“依然”。故选C。‎ ‎8.D 固定搭配lend a helping hand to…的意思是“伸出援助之手,助一臂之力”。故选 D。‎ Ⅱ.9.D 10.B 11.A Ⅲ.12.Many experts.‎ ‎13.In 1930.‎ ‎14.To solve the problem of spelling. ‎ ‎15.They just say “Say again.”‎ ‎16.How people have tried to make English easier.‎ 5‎
