She worried particularly about the lack of jobs, the cultural differences and the chance that I would face racism(种族偏见).‎ Despite these worries, I came to New Zealand in July 2009. I have found the place and people very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a job for my living expenses.‎ Determined to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going door to door asking for a job. However, I received little response. This became my routine every day after college for a few weeks.‎ One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask whether there were any job opportunities. People there were very surprised, and advised me not to continue my ‎ job search in that manner. As I was about to leave, a clerk in the building, who had been listening to what the others had said, approached me and asked me to wait outside for a while. Fifteen minutes later, he returned. He asked me about my plans and encouraged me to stay confident. Then he offered to take me to Royal Oak to search for a job.‎ I was a little surprised but had a good feeling about him. He gave me some suggestions on dressing and speaking. I handed out my resumes and went home feeling very satisfied. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.‎ It seems that the world always gives back to you when you need it .And this time,it was a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing.‎ ‎21.What wasn’t the author’s mother worried about?‎ A. Joe Heim from WashingtonPost had an interview with her.‎ Joe Heim: What do you think of a reporter who interviews you for 25 minutes, then later finds out his recorder stopped working and asks you to do the interview again?‎ Valerie Jarrett: That he's human. You could have just tried to pretend that it didn't happen.‎ Joe Heim: You're considered the president's closest adviser. Have you ever given him bad advice since he became president?‎ Valerie Jarrett: I'm sure that I have. I think one of the reasons why the president's management style is very effective is because all of his advisers feel very comfortable being open about their advice. Finally, there's only one decision-maker. And that's the president.‎ Joe Heim: What misunderstandings are there of you?‎ Valerie Jarrett: A little-known fact is that I started my life very shy and remained very shy well into adulthood. Painfully shy, I would call it. And I often share this, particularly with young people, because it's something I really had to work hard to overcome. And for all the shy people out there I say, you, too, can overcome it. But it took a lot of hard work on my part, and I discovered along the way that just because you're nervous and you have butterflies in your stomach doesn't mean that it has to show. My point in sharing it with you is that part of life is pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone (舒适区). And if you're going to grow, you have to learn how to take on new challenges that you might not be good at.‎ Joe Heim: Will you stay until the end of his term?‎ Valerie Jarrett: I serve at the pleasure of the president. If he wants me to stay, I will.‎ ‎25.From the underlined words “That he's human”, we can learn Valerie Jarrett is _____.‎ A. warm-hearted B. broad-minded C. well-educated D. strong-willed ‎26.Why does Valerie Jarrett share her shyness?‎ A. To show her hard way to success.‎ B. To prove shy people can also be great.‎ C. To show it is easy to overcome shyness.‎ D. To ask people to face challenges bravely.‎ ‎27.In which part of a newspaper could we find this text?‎ A. People. B. Society. C. World. D. Culture.‎ ‎28.Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?‎ UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”.‎ Nitrogen(氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi(真菌)networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons(神经元)in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.‎ Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.‎ ‎“We didn't take any notice of it.” Simard says sadly . “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them a chance.” If we could ‎ put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.‎ ‎【小题1】What would be the best title for the passage?‎ A. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans B. Young Trees Are In Need Of Protection C. Trees Are More Complex Than You Think D. Trees Contribute To Our Society ‎【小题2】In Simard's opinion, trees _______ .‎ A. depend on each other B. protect their own wealth C. compete for survival D. provide support for dying trees ‎【小题3】We can learn from the passage that A. “mother trees” are usually of no use to other trees.‎ B. Charles Darwin had the same thought as Simard.‎ C. people know much about the complex “tree societies”.‎ D. if “mother trees” are cut down, the survival for the entire forest will be affected.‎ ‎【小题4】The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to .‎ A. how trees grow old B. how “tree societies” work C. how forestry industry develops D. how young trees survive ‎ Thomas, the pioneering White House reporter known for putting presidents on the hot seat, died at 92.‎ To those who regularly watch presidential press conferences, Helen Thomas is a familiar figure. Usually dressed in red and always seated in the front row, she is always the first or second reporter the president calls upon. It is an honour she has earned. Besides, it affords her the perfect opportunity to do what she does ‎ best—challenge the president and other public officials to tell the plain truth. She said, “ We reporters’ priority(首要事情) is the people’s right to know---without fear or favor. We are the people’s servants.”‎ Helen Thomas was born in Kentucky in 1920. All the nine Thomas' children were brought up to value education, and all were expected to make something of themselves through working hard. She decided to become a reporter while in high school. After receiving her bachelor's degree in 1942, Thomas headed for Washington D.C, looking for a newspaper job. Soon, she landed one at Washington Daily News. Her duty included fetching coffee and doughnuts for the paper's reporters and editors. This young woman found the atmosphere exciting, believing she had made the right career choice.‎ Her big break came when she was sent to Florida to report on the vacation of President John F.Kennedy and his family. Once President Kennedy took office, Thomas changed her focus from the president's family to his policies. She began attending the daily press briefings at the White House as well as presidential press conferences. Thomas has covered every president since Kennedy. Over the years, Thomas found her job “thrilling and inspiring”, but never boring. And she took seriously her duty to “keep an eye on the president” and keep American people informed.‎ ‎29.What can we learn about Helen Thomas from the passage?‎ A.Her career took off after covering President Kennedy.‎ B.Her first job was to deliver doughnuts to a news agency.‎ C.She was born into a large family in Kentucky in 1942.‎ D.She decided to be a reporter while in college.‎ ‎30.Paragraph 3 is written to show Helen Thomas________.‎ A.is a good decision maker for her career B.appreciates education and hard work C.wants to be famous by writing reports D.has great support from her family ‎31.What does Helen Thomas think of her work?‎ A.Unbearable.
