This passage connected Europe in the West with China in the East, and allowed the exchange of goods, technology, and ideas between the two civilizations. Although merchants could make huge profits travelling the road, it was not without risk. The main Silk Road started in Chang’an (known today as Xi’an), the early Han capital. Travelers commencing their journey from this city could take a northern route that would take them across China’s northwestern provinces. After this, they would face the Gobi Desert, arguably the greatest danger of the Silk Road. The Gobi Desert, the largest desert in Asia, consists mainly of rocky, hard earth. This feature made it easier for traders to travel across, compared to sandy deserts like the neighboring Taklamakan Desert. Like other deserts, the Gobi Desert is dry and hot, and therefore the biggest challenge travelers faced was obtaining enough water for themselves as well as for their camels. So, rest stops were created along the route, allowing travelers to rest, eat and drink. These places also promoted the exchange of goods, and even ideas, amongst the travelers who stopped there. Usually, the rest stops were placed within a day’s journey of each other. In this way, travelers could avoid spending too much time in the desert, which would make them targets for robbers, another danger of the Silk Road. Once through the Gobi Desert, travelers would continue their journey into Iran, Turkey, and finally Europe. While this part of the journey may have been less dangerous, it is not entirely without its danger. 24.The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to _____. A.making huge profits B.traveling the Silk Road C.exchanging goods and ideas D.connecting different civilizations 25.Why was the Gobi Desert easier to cross than other deserts? A.The desert’s surface was easier to walk on. B.Camels for transportation were easier to find. C.It was smaller and could be crossed in less time. D.There were more natural water sources available. 26.What can we guess about the rest stops in the Gobi Desert? A.Travelers were offered free accommodation. B.They were located around the edges of the desert. C.Travelers staying there were often attacked by criminals. D.They were shared by travelers from different countries. 27.What is the passage mainly about? A.The origins of the Silk Road. B.The benefits of the Silk Road. C.The difficulties faced by Silk Road travelers. D.The cultural exchanges among Silk Road travelers. C I spend half of my life with my mother and the other half with my father. My father lives with a twenty-pound cat named Tofu. He calls me his favorite daughter. I am an only child. My father's apartment is quite different from any other person's living space. Except for my room, there is no furniture. He doesn't like sofas or any comfortable chairs, so he has only a drawing table, a desk and his bed. He spends a lot of time lying on the studio floor. That's how he thinks, he says. Then he does yoga. He has a big kitchen, and on top of the refrigerator is an old clock he winds every week for good luck. The last time the clock stopped, my father's car was towed (被警察拖走) and some other terrible things happened, so he has become very superstitious (迷信的). When he goes out of town, he hires someone to feed Tofu and wind the clock so it won't stop. The one thing he has plenty of is house rules. You have to take off your shoes when you come in. He won't allow anyone who wears a baseball cap into his house. He says only baseball players should wear baseball caps and only the catchers should wear them backward. Every time I go to stay in his house, he makes up a new rule. “House rule number 579, no television programs with laugh tracks!” he will say. But then he can never remember the numbers, so they change constantly. The rule that he always enforces is the one that requires me to write a two-page essay anytime I want something. He didn't speak English until he was sixteen, and he had a hard time learning to write it, so he wants me to become a good writer at an early age. This ritual (仪式)started when I asked him if I could have my ears pierced when I was nine. He said it was very cruel and told me I couldn't do it until I was thirty-five. But l kept asking him, and he finally said that if I wrote an essay and I could persuade him in writing why I wanted holes in my ears, maybe he would say okay. I wrote my first essay for my father, and after one month of writing and rewriting, he finally gave me his permission. 28.What is unusual about the father's apartment? A.It has a large kitchen. B.The father does yoga at home. C.It is scarcely furnished. D.The father spends a lot of time on the floor. 29.Which of the following is an example of the house rules? A.Someone is hired to feed Tofu. B.You can't wear shoes in the house. C.Baseball players are not allowed into the apartment. D.The writer can't watch television programs in the apartment. 30.Which of these statements about the clock is TRUE? A.It is not an automatic one. B.Her father doesn't like the clock. C.It can bring good luck to them. D.Someone is hired to wind it every week. 31.We can infer that the writer's father____. A.was a famous writer B.was born in the United States C.was a caring and strict father D.speaks more than one language D Food experts say washing could spread the germs on your turkey in the kitchen sink or nearby food. But it's been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop rinsing (冲洗) off raw poultry (家禽). Germs that can make people sick are common in the guts (内脏) of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the bacteria. The do — not — wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn't caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State University, said the instinct to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important. But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it's not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging. The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli (大肠杆菌) and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the bacteria to their lettuce. But even some of those who did not rinse the chicken got germs on the lettuce. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking. To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren't out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours. 32.People don't accept USDA's advice because____. A.the advice is relatively new B.cleaning seems more trustworthy C.cooks clean the turkey before cooking it D.heat can kill most germs and no one eats raw food 33.What can be concluded from Paragraph 4? A.Food packages carry germs. B.Hands and surfaces are easy to get E. coli. C.Germs from a turkey can be spread whether it is washed or not. D.Multiple methods should be applied to food to get rid of germs. 34.Which way may help to cook a turkey safely? A.Rinse off the turkey before it is heated. D.Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey. 35.From which section of a magazine is the text probably taken? A.Culture. B.Science. C.Education. Science meant mathematics and medical studies. 36 Mathematics included practical work like surveying land for making maps as well as measuring the movements of the stars in the sky. An artist might need to measure the different parts of the body. He could also use mathematics to place things in relationship to each other in a drawing or painting so the scene looked correct. 37 Mathematics was also connected to music because musical sounds have a fixed relationship with each other that can be described in numbers. 38 More than this, though, Leonardo believed that numbers were a part of all things in the world, including music, and he said that “without them nothing can be done.” “Nature has kindly given us things everywhere to copy,” wrote Leonardo. In all his activities, Leonardo was trying to discover the rules that control nature. In his search for those rules, he looked very carefully at a lot of examples and details. Actual experience was more important to him than opinion, and he worked from facts to ideas. 39 His purpose was to examine the world so he could copy it in beautiful paintings and sculptures. He also wanted to learn from the clever solutions of nature. 40 His quick little sketches (素描), often done while wandering outside, helped him to catch a movement or a shape. More careful drawings would be done at a desk with a pen and ruler. In July 2001, a small drawing by Leonardo was sold for $12 million. It was the most expensive drawing in the world. A. Leonardo was always drawing. B. How could these be connected with art? C. Leonardo’s ideas were vastly ahead of his time. D. Mathematicians and doctors worked to discover the unknown. E. Above all, Leonardo wanted to understand how and why things worked. F. You will see a good example of such positioning in the painting of The Last Supper. G. Leonardo himself was a very good musician and liked to play an instrument and sing. In your letter, you said with the COVID-19 epidemic raging around, you school is going to adapt online schooling, and here are my suggestions to help you become an autonomous learner. First, you should be aware that you need great concentration and self-discipline when taking online courses, as there are more distractions and less teachers’ supervision compared with on-campus life. Secondly, studying from home is never easier than studying in school, so you’d better get fully involved. For example, you can take notes and interact with the teacher actively, which will help you stay focused. In my view, studying online poses a challenge to you, but it also means an opportunity for you to make progress. I sincerely hope you can return to campus, where you can enjoy face-to-face classes with your friends. I firmly believe that the day will come soon because of the joint efforts and effective measures to fight the COVID-19 epidemic. Yours, Li Hua查看更多
