Here we help with ways to cut your costs.‎ ‎ AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost £169.15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost £118.15.‎ ‎ If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid—or you’re looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.‎ ‎ STAY AWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.‎ ‎ Don’t be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge’s Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was £95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £62.95. ‎ ‎ GET ON A BIKE London’s ‘Boris bikes’ have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programmes that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.‎ ‎ Among the smaller cities with their own programmes are Newcastle (casual members pay around £1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £5 per day). ‎ ‎21. This elderly gentleman would visit the Hanuman temple near his home every morning, where he would often see several children standing outside, begging the people for food.‎ ‎"These children have working parents who lock their homes when they go to work. They have to leave their children outside to look after themselves. Classes in the local government school start only at 10:00AM, so these children beg for food outside the temple before going to school", says Prasad.‎ One morning, Prasad bought biscuits from the shop near the temple gate for a few of them. When talking with them, Prasad learnt more about their school and the different classes the children attended. He also asked them some basic questions and realized they had no grasp of simple concepts in science and math, nor any knowledge of spelling and writing in English and Hindi. He asked them if they would like to study. After receiving a positive response, he promised to meet them on the pavement outside the temple the next day at 8:00AM. Ever since that cold winter morning in November 2013, these street children have had classes on the pavement outside the temple.‎ Several local residents take a keen interest in the classes as well, offering help when they have time. Madam Manju comes in to teach the children English, Brother Singh helps them with math, and Mandam Kirtika gives lessons in both science and math. There are others who donate books and some who buy snacks for the children.‎ Despite the noisy vehicles and passers-by, the children here are focused and eager to read and write. They didn't know how to sit or talk properly at first. Now they have changed and helped each other with their studies. Shyam Brihari Prasad has turned the lives of many of these children around. They are doing well in their school exams and are spending happy and fruitful mornings instead of begging on the street.‎ ‎24. Why did the children wander around the Hanuman temple? ‎ A. They were too young to go to school and had to kill time there.‎ B. The Hanuman temple was a good place for them to play and study.‎ C. Their parents lock their homes before their classes start.‎ D. Thanks to Shyam Bihari Prasad, the street children____________.‎ A. behave better at school B. enjoy helping strangers C. hate reading books in the morning D. can get full marks in exams C In today’s households where both parents go to work and kids have busy schedules with school, homework and many afternoon activities, finding time for a gathering at the table seems all but impossible. Yet, studies have shown time and again that eating together has multiple benefits for family members, especially children.‎ ‎ According to reports issued by the CASA, children who eat more with their family are at lower risk of developing poor eating habits, weight problems or alcohol dependencies. They tend to perform better academically than those who frequently eat alone. Family meals came into American life in the mid-20th century. In the 60's and 70's, social, economic and technological changes quickly dissolved the short-lived way of family meals. Restaurant visits, take-out and TV dinners have since become the norm (常态).‎ There are indications, however, that the old customs are coming back. According to the latest CASA reports, 59% of surveyed families said they ate dinner together at least five times a week, a significant increase from 47% in 1998. Whatever drives this trend, it is a development that should be welcomed.‎ Eating together as a family is not just about food and nutrition. It is about teaching them how to become members of their society and culture. Sharing a meal with loved ones should be considered a special event, which can almost take on the form of a ceremony, as it was practiced by our ancestors for whom finding food was a constant struggle. ‎ Of course, there is no guarantee that the simple act of eating at home surrounded by family may make children more socially responsible. But it can lay the groundwork for a lot of things that point them in the right direction.‎ ‎28. What does the underlined sentence suggest?‎ A. This practice of family meals started to change.‎ B. Dining at home would enjoy great popularity.‎ C. The society was to develop at a high speed.‎ D. Americans would attach importance to take-out. ‎ ‎29. What is the writer’s attitude towards eating together as a family?‎ A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Reserved. D. Objective. ‎ ‎30. From the passage we learn our ancestors possibly _____.‎ A. valued the education of children B. liked struggling with each other C. cared much about food nutrition D. appreciated the importance of food ‎31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?‎ A. Good Eating Habits Matter B. Family Dinners Benefit Kids C. Meals Take on New Meanings D. Old Customs Are Coming Back D Everybody knows that different nationalities have their own special behavior when they go on holiday. But how differently would different nationalities behave? Psychologists created some tests to show the best and worst sides of tourists from four countries. ‎ The Germans were the only group to send back a bottle of wine tasting of vinegar, the British did not mind when people jumped the queue, and the Japanese were so ‎ shocked when an actor began showering with nothing on that they turned their backs on him. The most upsetting thing for the Americans was finding someone had burned their flag. ‎ There were also surprising reactions to a “drunk” coach driver. The British ‎ were the least accepting and refused to get on the bus. The Japanese weren’t worried until their group leader noticed that the driver still had a bottle of alcohol. The Germans were by far the most understanding and did not want to complain in case the driver lost his job. ‎ When the tourists had a free afternoon the British played football in the pouring rain, the Germans went walking, the Japanese hired a coach to go sight-seeing, and the Americans played pool (桌球).‎ ‎ In one situation an actor started smoking on a non-smoking bus. The British politely asked him to smoke outside, the Japanese were far more concerned with maintaining harmony and said nothing, the Germans had a vote and asked him to put it out, while the Americans were the least bothered, and actually started smoking themselves. ‎ All four nationalities were equally accepting when they were served deliberately poor food. When an actor pretended to steal beer from the bar, the British and Americans were no better than each other and started to join in, the Germans refused to take part, while the Japanese were so horrified that they told the bar staff. ‎ ‎32. Psychologists filmed tourists for the purpose of__________‎ A. proving how many different sides tourists had B. finding all four nationalities are equally accepting ‎ C. seeing how tourists from different countries did differently D. preparing for a film about tourists from different countries.‎ ‎33.
