She picked it up and opened it .Sitting on the bed, she started to read it:‎ My darling daughter, I'm so happy for my darling is getting married to such a good man! Yes, you're smart and Vinod will be there with you to help, but I have a few things to say:‎ ‎   Accept Vinod’s parents as your parents. Thus, a new relationship will be born: one of respect ‎ and understanding.   ‎ ‎ Finally, respect your husband, as he's your life partner. Remember that a marriage requires trust, love and compromise (妥协).     I could have sat with you and told you, but I felt that writing all this down would make you understand better and I'm sure you'll give your whole heart to this relationship. It may even harm their development. The studies show that giving children too many toys or toys of the wrong type can actually be doing them harm. They get overwhelmed and cannot concentrate on anything long enough to learn from it.‎ ‎ The conclusions have been backed up by British research looking at children with relatively fewer toys, whose parents spend more time reading, singing or playing with them. It showed such children surpass(胜过) youngsters from richer backgrounds, even those who could use computers.‎ ‎ Some parents notice the ill effect early. Orhan Ismail, a researcher saw a change ‎ for the worse in Cameron, his 10-month-old son, after he was given a lot of toys last Christmas.‎ ‎ Ismail said, “If there are too many toys in front of him, he will just keep flitting around them and then end up going off and finding something like a slipper to play with. Now we just get out one or two toys and hide the rest in a box.”‎ ‎ Alexander and her husband also decided to limit the toys their 6 daughters play with. She believed many toys restrict children’s imaginations. She said, “ A Barbie can only work as a Barbie. But a cardboard box can become anything. The only limitations are in the child’s mind.”‎ ‎ Experts hesitate to put a figure on the number of toys children should have, but many believe two dozen is enough for children of preschool age.‎ ‎24. I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So,naturally I wanted to take a trip to Canada.‎ Montreal, the second largest city in Canada,is a fourhour drive from my home in New Hampshire.‎ We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border.‎ We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations. After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous St. Catherine's street. While we walked two things surprised us: how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine.‎ All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold. Last year it broke the record for snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁). It is delicious.‎ However, we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest Frenchspeaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speaks English, plenty of people were there to help.‎ We spent the rest of the weekend going to the historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we'd head to the very modern dance clubs and bars. Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveler can choose whichever direction he wants to go in.‎ ‎28________ surprised the author when he was in Montreal according to the passage.‎ A.Its cold weather and welldressed citizens B.Its delicious snack and beautiful streets C.Generosity and kindness of the citizens there D.Its beautiful streets and welldressed citizens ‎29. How do you understand the sentence “Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine” in Paragraph 4?‎ A.The men and women are really fashion models of a magazine.‎ B.The portraits of the men and women are printed in the magazine.‎ C.They are so welldressed that they look like models of a magazine.‎ D.The men and women like to copy characters in magazines.‎ ‎30.Which of the following can't we conclude from Paragraph 4?‎ A.The author and his friends couldn't wait to explore the city.‎ B.The author wasn't used to the weather of Montreal.‎ C.The citizens from Montreal care much about what they wear.‎ D.Montreal often holds fashion shows.‎ ‎31.What can we infer from the passage?‎ A.The author often went to China for a visit.‎ B.The people they met in the diner were kind and helpful.‎ C.All the people in the diner were locals.‎ D.The author went to Montreal on business.‎ D As is shown in a recent study, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type personality they have. Robert Phipps, a body language expert, has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.‎ Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal (胎儿的) position. He found that this is by far the most common bedtime position, sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up (蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps.‎ The second most common position is the log, indicating stubbornness. People sleep with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, and these people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake up stiffer (更僵硬) than when they went to sleep.” The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps.‎ Yearner (向往型的) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style — on their backs with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting great results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.‎ Perhaps the most special sleep style is the freefaller position. This sleep style ‎ makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, it also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.‎ In conclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A good night's sleep sets you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.”‎ ‎32.Which of the following pictures is the fetal position?‎ ‎ A B C D ‎33.The underlined word “rigid” the third paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.‎ A.comfortable B.flexible C.stubborn D.strange ‎34.Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection?‎ A.The fetal position. B.The log position.‎ C.The yearner position. D.The freefaller position.‎ ‎35.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A.Which sleeping position helps you sleep comfortably? ‎ B.A good night's sleep sets you up for the following day.‎ C.How you sleep at night affects what you do the next day.‎ D.Your personality depends a lot on how you sleep at night.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 ‎ How to Stay in a Good Mood It's typical to feel your mood starting to become bad. If you want to be able to stay in a good mood, then you have to form these habits that will keep you feeling happy.‎ ‎1. Don’t take love for granted.‎ If you're lucky enough to have a special someone, then you should make your time together meaningful. 36 Make time to spend time with your special someone.‎ ‎2. Get regular exercise. Regular exercise is one of the most important habits that you need to form. 37 . You can go running three times a week and walk the other four. Just make sure to be as active as you can every day. 3. Spend time with your friends. 38 Of course, don’t always hang out with friends when you have a free moment. Make sure you do make time to see friends at least once or twice a week, if you can. 4. Get enough sleep. 39 One of the easiest ways to stay in a good mood is to be well-rested. Waking up feeling full of energy will make you feel much more ready to face the day and much more excited about everything ahead of you.‎ ‎5. 40 ‎ If you want to stay in a good mood, then you have to make sure that you eat three healthy and diverse (不同的)meals every day.
