I moved from Long Island to Florida three years ago. Even though I own a home in Port St. Lucie just minutes from the ocean, an uncontrollable urge wells up to return to Long Island even as others make their way south. I guess I am a snowbird stuck in reverse. Instead of enjoying Florida’s milder winters, I willingly bear the severe weather on Long Island, the place I called home for 65 years. I’m like a migratory bird (候鸟) that has lost its sense of timing and direction, my wings flapping against season. So what makes me fly against the tide of snowbirds? The answer has a lot to do with my reluctance to give up the things that define who I am. Once I hear that the temperature on Long Island has dipped into the range of 40 to 50 degrees, I begin to long for the sight and crackling sound of a wood fire. I also long for the bright display of colors-first in the fall trees, and then in the lights around homes and at Rockefeller Center. Floridians decorate, too, but can’t create the special feel of a New England winter. I suppose the biggest reason why I return is to celebrate the holidays with people I haven’t seen in months. What could be better than sitting with family and friends for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, or watching neighbors’ children excitedly open gifts on Christmas? Even the first snowfall seems special. I especially enjoy seeing a bright red bird settling on a snow-covered branch. (My wife and I spend winters at a retirement community in Ridge, and I’m grateful that I don’t have to shovel.) While these simple pleasures are not unique to Long Island, they are some of the reasons why I come back. Who says you can’t go home? 24. What’s the difference between Florida and Long Island? A. Winters in Florida are milder. B. The snowbirds in Florida are rarer. C. Weather in Florida is severer. D. Florida is nearer to the ocean. 25. What does the underlined word “reluctance” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Coincidence. B. Expectation. C. Unwillingness. D. Motivation. 26. Which of the following words can best describe the author? A. Homesick and easy-going. B. Hard-working and serious. C. Imaginative and outspoken. D. Anxious and painful. 27. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To describe his dream to be a free bird. B. To express his feeling of missing his hometown. C. To praise the beauty and warmth of his family life. D. To explain the reasons for moving from his hometown. C The typical British employees can expect to spend about £34,000 during their whole working life on the daily costs of being in the office, including tea runs and leaving gifts for colleagues, according to research. A survey of 2,000 office workers across the UK found that the combined cost of Christmas parties and dinners, cards and presents, coffees and teas, sponsorship (赞助) requests, Secret Santa and etc. totaled about £850 a year. Over the course of a 40-year career, that would amount to about £34,000, according to Nationwide Current Account, which carried out the survey. Men generally tend to be unhappier than women about spending money at work, but women are more likely to feel stressed into paying out for work-related items. 42% of men were unhappy about spending money at work Christmas parties, compared with 34% of women. But one in five women said they felt under pressure to spend money at work Christmas parties, compared with just 12% of men. Overall, more than a quarter of people surveyed said they felt pressured when it came to contributing towards birthday and leaving gifts, with 27% of people saying this about gifts for colleagues who were leaving. Nearly 32% said they felt pressured into contributing money to help their colleagues’ charity fund raising efforts. Alan Oliver, Nationwide’s head of external affairs, said, “Working in an office can be an expensive business, especially in big teams. Too many birthdays, retirements and charity fundraisers can take their toll on our wallets and purses. We would recommend putting in only what you can afford. Developing a regular savings habit can also help in meeting many of future life’s financial challenges.” 28. Which one is right according to the passage? A. What does Alan Oliver advise office workers to do? A. Work in big teams. B. Save money for future use. C. Get along well with colleagues. D. Raise enough money to do charity. 31. What can be the best title for the text? A. The Management of Personal Finance B. Relations Among the UK Office Workers C. Levels of Happiness of the UK Office Workers D. The Daily Cost of the UK Employees in an Office D China is developing a system that recognizes individuals by their body shape and walking movements. Systems that recognize human faces are already being used to identify people in crowds or as a secure way to unlock personal devices. The new system, known as "gait recognition," is already being used by police on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai. The Chinese technology company Watrix developed the system. The company announced last month that it had raised $14.5 million to speed up the development and sale of the technology. The system works in a similar way to face recognition. Cameras capture video of people in public places. Then, machines powered by artificial intelligence (AI) examine and study the video. Facial recognition systems identify the shapes and expressions on a person's face to identify them. Gait recognition uses a person's body shape and their way of walking to identify them. The system records a person's shape and movements and then creates a model of the way they walk. Huang Yongzhen is a former researcher who co-founded Watrix in 2016. He told the Associated Press his system can identify people from up to 50 meters away. It is designed to work even when a person's face is covered or hidden. Successful facial recognition usually requires clear, close-up images of a person's face. Currently, the Watrix system is not able to identify people in real-time. Users have to enter video into the system, which then takes about 10 minutes to process each hour of video. Huang says his gait recognition system is correct 94 percent of the time. This is below the success rate of many face recognition systems. But he says the system can still be helpful to police and for other commercial purposes. He also believes the system can be effective when used together with face recognition. "You don't need people's cooperation for us to be able to recognize their identity," Huang told the AP. "People still don't recognize they can be recognized by their gait, whereas everybody knows you can be recognized by your face," he added. He said the system would not easily be misled by a person changing their usual way of walking or other body movements. This is because the AI system is designed to examine all movements over the entire body. "We believe you are totally unique in the way you walk," Huang said. 32. How does the Watrix system work? A. By identifying the shapes and expressions on a person's face. B. By identifying person's body shape and their way of walkimg. C. By identifying clear and close-up images of a person’s face. D. By identifying people in real-time. 33. According to Huang Yongzhen, which one of the following statements of “gait recognition” is true? A. The success rate of it is higher than that of face recognition systems. B. It fails to work without clear images of a person’s face. C. All attempts to identify people are not always correct. D. It takes less than 10 minutes to process each hour of video. 34.How many mistakes might it have if the “gait recognition system” identify 3000 people? A.180 B.2820 C.120 D.2880 35. Which of the following will lead to a wrong recognition by the Watrix system? A. To change your usual way of walking. B. To change your body movements deliberately. C. To cover your face. D. To walk 100 meters away from the system. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Rise and shine all day Making these easy tasks part of your morning schedule will improve your nutrition, energy, and mood today—and beyond. Stretch in bed Try this even before you open your eyes. Lift one arm and begin by stretching each finger, then your hand, then your wrist, and then your whole arm.36. Then stretch your toes, feet, ankles, and legs. Finally, end with a neck and back stretch that propels you out of bed. This “power pose” makes you feel more confident all day long. 37 Working out before you eat encourages your body to burn more fat for energy rather than relying on carbohydrates from food. In a study, participants who exercised after breakfast still gained weight, but those who exercised on an empty stomach did not. Turn on the music 38. If anyone plays an instrument, and if you have a little time, morning is the perfect time to practice, as it primes your brain for learning. One study found that both playing and listening to music help improve academic performance in 16 different ways, including increasing focus and memory. Enjoy some fun Many people dread having to face a new day of work, school, or chores.39.
