Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.‎ Must-See Attractions Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a popular place for celebrity(名人) spotting and nightlife today.‎ Transportation Travelers should be aware that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the busiest airports in the world. This airport is located about 15 kilometers southwest of city center. You can catch a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, which has many connecting routes(路线). It’s typically not a good idea to drive a car to the city center because traffic is heavy and parking is difficult to find. Cycling is incredibly popular here, and it’s easy to find cheap bike rentals(出租) around town. Amsterdam has a flat terrain(地形) and is a great city to explore on foot.‎ Money Saving Tips Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.‎ Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.‎ Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.‎ Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.‎ Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.‎ ‎21.Which attraction was built with the original purpose of drawing the rich?‎ A. Albert Cuyp Market. B. The Ann Frank House.‎ C. The Van Gogh Museum. D. The Canal Ring.‎ ‎22. Which means of transportation is not advisable in Amsterdam according to the passage?‎ A. The plane. B. The train. C. The car. D. The bike.‎ ‎23. Which way can help visitors save money in Amsterdam?‎ A. Seeing the tulips blooming in spring. B. Avoiding accommodating downtown.‎ C. Buying car tickets at the machine. D. Hiring a local tour guide.‎ B It was the first snow of winter – an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Up until now, I had been old enough to dress myself, but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher, had been through first snow days many times, but I think she may still remember this one.‎ I managed to get into my wool snow trousers. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn’t fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots(靴子).‎ In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will all be able to put on your own boots.” I didn’t realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.‎ I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected grown-ups to do all the work. After much pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.‎ I announced, “They’re on the wrong feet.”‎ She struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again.‎ ‎“They’re my brother’s boots, you know,” I said. “I hate them!”‎ Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn’t an annoying(烦人的)little girl, She pushed and pushed, less gently this time. With a greater sigh, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, “Now, where are your mittens(连指手套)?”‎ I looked into her eyes and said, “I didn’t want to lose them, so I hid them in the toes of my boots.”‎ ‎24.The little girl was more satisfied with her__________.‎ A.hat B.jacket C.boots D.trousers ‎25.Miss Finlayson had difficulty with the girl’s boots mainly because_____.‎ A.the girl got them from her brother B.they did not fit the girl well C.they were on the wrong feet D.the girl put something in them ‎26.Why does the author say Miss Finlayson would remember that first snow day?‎ A.Because the little girl was in her brother’s clothes.‎ B.Because it was the most exciting day of the winter.‎ C.Because the little girl played a trick on her.‎ D.Because the little girl wore a pretty scarf.‎ ‎27.We can learn from the text that Miss Finlayson_________.‎ A.was losing confidence in the little girl B.gradually lost patience with the little girl C.became disappointed with the little girl D.was getting bored with the little girl ‎ C There are several reasons why cats climb trees, mostly to do with defensive purposes. Cats, as predators (捕食者), like to understand their environment well. Cats climb trees to get a better view of their surroundings(环境), to help them see any potential(潜在的) dangers or potential prey (被掠食者).‎ While cats are predators, they can also be easily attacked by larger animals. A tree often provides a safe hiding place. In the wild, cats climb up trees to give them a resting place that is out of predators' range(范围).It also helps disguise their presence, which can prevent any prey from noticing that there is a cat nearby.‎ Sometimes some cats may climb trees for fun, or possibly to work on improving their climbing abilities. Kittens frequently test out their claw skills by trying ‎ to climb up everything, from bookcases to trees to a person's leg. Climbing practice is good for cats; it can improve their strength and flexibility and teach them an important defensive skill. To prevent them from practicing indoor climbing of your furniture, however, owners may wish to buy a carpeted cat tree for climbing.‎ If a cat has gotten up a tree and cannot get down, the owner may wonder why its remarkable climbing abilities only work in one direction. A cat's claws curve (弯曲) inward, allowing it to take hold of surfaces while going up head first. Unfortunately, this useful climbing curve does nothing to help the animal get back down again. Eventually, most trapped kittens will either jump out of the tree or realize that they can get down by going tail first. Either way, a cat up a tree is usually nothing to panic about unless it is injured; they are intelligent animals and will find out how to get down sooner or later.‎ ‎28.In most cases, cats climb trees in order to ________.‎ A.have fun B.seek food C.defend themselves D.please their owners ‎29.What does the underlined word “disguise” in Paragraph 2 mean?‎ A.Find out. B.Pay attention to. C.Make clear. D.Cover up.‎ ‎30.Why do people want to buy carpeted cat trees?‎ A.To train their cats in climbing. B.To help protect their furniture.‎ C.To improve their cats' claw skills. D.To keep their cats warm in winter.‎ ‎31.Seeing your cat up a tree, you are supposed to ________.‎ A.just take it easy B.lead it down slowly C.feed some food to it at once D.keep an eye on it all the time D Scientists in England are using two selfdirected water vehicles to explore the animal and plant life of the Celtic Sea.‎ The Celtic Sea is a body of water off the southern coast of Ireland. The area is known for its unusual sea life. Scientists want to know why sea creatures are so attracted to this part of the Atlantic Ocean.‎ One of the research vehicles is powered by batteries (电池). It collects information for the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, England, and the ‎ World Wildlife Fund. The vehicle's low energy requirements permit it to stay floating on water for up to 30 days. Reports of what it finds in the Celtic Sea are sent by satellite.‎ Stephen Woodward is an engineer who helped design the vehicle. He says the vehicle has equipment(设备) that can discover small organisms called zooplankton (浮游动物) and fish. He adds that other sensing equipment measures water currents and other features of sea life. The vehicle also creates a map of the sea.‎ Another vehicle is powered by the sun and the wind. It can stay floating on water for months. The robotic vehicle sends information about the socalled biodiversity hotspot. A biodiversity hotspot is an area of an ocean that has a lot of plant and animal life activity.‎ Lavinia Suberg is one of the scientists studying the Celtic Sea. She says productive ocean areas, like the Celtic Sea, attract zooplankton. The zooplankton then attracts fish. She adds that areas with a large increase of fish often attract sea mammals and birds.‎ Using these robotic ocean vehicles greatly reduces the cost of exploring the sea with manned labs. Scientists can spend more time analyzing(分析) the collected information. They say the research will give them a better understanding of the needs of the Celtic Sea for future management and protection.‎ ‎32.Why do the British scientists explore the Celtic Sea?‎ A.To study the geography of the sea. B.To learn why the sea is rich in sea life.‎ C.To test their selfdirected water vehicles. I was really excited about teaching because it was my first paid job. I began each class by introducing myself. I could see the excitement in my students ’ faces. Their warm welcome made me feel comfortable and so I let them ask me some questions. To my surprise, I was asked questions like“ How old are you?” “ Are you married?” " Why aren't you married? " "Why did you come to Japan? "I was really surprised because you should not ask people you met for the first time such personal questions in Canada. After this happened in several classes, I stopped giving the students chance to ask me these questions, I later found out that these questions are acceptable in Japan, and that is not information that is considered too personal.‎ ‎ Once I realized that the students didn’t mean to be impolite and actually cared about me, I felt much more comfortable about my first experiences.‎
