Now there is one more thing we can add to this list - blocking out harmful bacteria in water. The discovery was made by some scientists and high school students who were seeking for a natural water filter(过滤器)—one that can help people in developing countries that don't have access to modern water systems. The researchers, led by Rohit Karnik, a professor, decided to turn to trees for help because they were able to allow liquid to flow through while blocking out air bubbles(气泡). They began by cutting 1.5-inch-wide sections of the tree bark from the branch of a white pine tree. The researchers then tested the wood's filtering ability by pouring water containing red dye particles(颗粒)of different sizes through. To their surprise, they found it was effective in trapping all the particles. Encouraged, the team did another experiment with water containing bacteria. Sure enough, the bark held back 99% of the bacteria, allowing only 1% to flow through. Mr Karnik said the bark was able to filter water containing much smaller particles. This means that it can be used to get rid of most of the bacteria. However, what troubles them is that the tree bark cannot hold back viruses, which tend to be much smaller. Though the experiment is successful, we must remember one thing---- the bark only works when damp. This means that before this natural filter can be put to practical use, the researchers will have to figure out how to keep the bark damp, or find a way to keep the bark's great filtering ability even when it's dry. But the study is not done. The researchers plan on testing other types of trees, including those flowering trees. They think those may be more effective in trapping smaller particles and even viruses. 25. How will the discovery affect the world? A. Clean water will be more accessible in developing countries. B. There will be no water pollution around the world. C. More pine trees will be planted around the world. D. No harmful bacteria will be found in water. 26. What troubles the researchers when they use the tree bark as a water filter? A .Not all bacteria can be held back. B. The tree bark should be wet. C. It's hard to remove air bubbles. D. Viruses cannot be prevented. 27. In which column of a newspaper can we read this text? A. Society. B. Culture. C. Science. D. Lifestyle. C One of the many great lines in the movie Apollo 13 came from Ed Harris, who played NASA Director of Operations, Gene Kranz. The famous line was, “Gentleman, failure is not an option.” He said the words because he had a clear purpose that the three astronauts trapped in space must be sent home safely. The driving force behind their seeking of a solution was motivated by a true purpose. Here is the simple principle. If you have a big enough “why” in life, you will always figure out the “how”. A person without a purpose in life is like a boat without a rudder, floating aimlessly without a direction and going nowhere. In all walks of life, when referring to someone's success, we often hear the words “focus and determination”. But Merriam Webster defines the word “purpose” as the reason why something is done, a feeling of being determined to achieve an outcome. There are many talented and intelligent people in the world that are unsuccessful because they lack direction. I believe that our life depends on our purpose. Whether you're single or in a team, having a purpose allows you to start, evaluate, and improve your talents or abilities helps you find your path in life and achieve your success finally. A friend of mine once told me that the most motivating speech he had ever heard was just three short words. It came from his wife when she said, “Honey I'm pregnant.” He said those few words instantly motivated him because he now had a big “why” in his life, a purpose to work hard to support his family. In fact, when your “why” gets bigger, you get better because you stop holding back and you'll go all out. It's why you often hear about some great people perform superhuman actions when failure is not an option! 28. What does the underlined word “rudder” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Something that gets the boat started. B. Something that directs the boat to a certain place. C. Something that makes the boat float. D. The reason for which the boat is built. 29. What is the most important thing for success according to Merriam Webster? A. Purpose. B. Intelligence. C. Determination. D. Talent. 30. The author gives his friend's example to show________. A. how people can get success more easily. B. that a purpose can make people try their best. C. that family love is very important in our daily life. D. why words can motivate people easily. 31. What does the author mainly tell us in this passage? A. To be successful person. B. To get rid of failure. C. To have a big “why ” in life. D. To make a right choice. D The roughness of a shark’s skin has a surprisingly useful quality --- it can keep away some bacteria. Surfaces that are like sharkskin can even keep away “superbugs”. These disease-causing bacteria cause a global health threat because they resist conventional bacteria-fighting chemicals. A company has been developing the sharkskin texture (织物). With its tiny ridges (脊) just 3 micrometers tall, the texture feels smooth to the touch. The company, Sharklet Technologies in Aurora, Colo., wants to place the texture on medical equipment and other surfaces that could host bacteria. The inventor of the sharkskin texture is Anthony Brennan. Brennan wasn’t initially trying to fight superbugs. The U. S. Navy wanted to learn how to keep algae (海藻) off the bodies of its ships. Brennan tried to create a surface that, if an organism came to it, it would find it too unstable to attach to. He tested panels with various coatings, dipping them into the water and hoping they’d come out clean. Just then, Brennan spotted a huge submarine(潜艇) returning to port. Covered with algae, it looked like a big whale. Like large boats, whales and other marine animals have “crusty” skin due to the build-up of algae. But sharks’ skin stays remarkably clear. The question was why. “I wonder what their skin is made of” he thought. Viewed under a microscope, the shark’s skin had a pattern of dips and ridges. He included the shark skin pattern on his test panels and that cut the build-up of green algae by 85 percent. Brennan later discovered, somewhat by accident, that this same texture also prevents the attachment of bacteria, including those that cause human diseases. New tests have now measured how well the texture keeps away bacteria. Sharkskin-inspired surfaces collect and hold 94 percent fewer bacteria than do smooth surfaces. The surfaces even perform better than copper, a widely used bacteria-fighter. 32. We can learn that Brennan’s Sharkskin texture feels ________. A. hard B. rough C. smooth D. heavy 33. According to the text, Brennan intended to invent something ________. A. that is as smooth as whales’ skin B. that prevents organisms attaching to it C. that has the same texture as whales D. that has a stable surface for algae to attach to 34. We can infer that Brennan’s finding is a good example of ________. A. how clever scientists are in fighting bacteria B. how bacteria are easy to kill on smooth surfaces C. how bacteria live on sharkskin-inspired surfaces D. how researchers can learn useful tips from nature 35. If the text continues, it may discuss ________. A. how the sharkskin texture works B. why sharks have smooth skin C. what sharks’ skin is made of D. whether the sharkskin texture is useful 第二节、(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处得最佳选项,选项中有两个选项为多余选项。 What is life's greatest gift? 36 Choice is the ability to select one course of action from a set of alternatives to achieve a goal. What is so great about choice? It transforms us from dumb animals into artists. Each of us becomes another Michelangelo. Choice is nothing other than the tool we use to sculpt(雕刻)our life. The tool doesn't come free, however, for the price of choice is responsibility. 37 The reward is happiness. Life is not still. It is a flow. 38 We constantly need to monitor where we are on our journey. We need to ask questions: Am I moving closer to my goals? If not, what corrective measures can I take? What action will I take now to readjust(再调整)myself to my goals? Choice is power. Choice is at the heart of life. It is the creative power of life. 39 And your life becomes more convenient or comfortable because of them. For example, you decide which stores to shop at and which gas station to go to. But the decisions that we make to sculpt our life are far more important than deciding where to shop. The more we appreciate the difference between minor and major decisions, the greater the probability that we will experience happiness and fulfillment. All chess-lovers realise that it isn’t necessary to win to enjoy the game. The pleasure is in the playing. Life is like a chess game. 40 A. You have to make choices every day. B. It is free will or choice. C. But when we accept and carry it out, we get a great return. D. Choose to shoulder responsibilities not because you have to,but because you want to. E.
