‎ A Sleep Struggle DR. MARJORIE SEIDENFELD ANSWERS YOUR HEALTH QUESTIONS ‎ I have such a terrible time falling asleep every night that I'm always tired and it's affecting my schoolwork. What should I do?‎ ‎—Mindy in Nevada ‎ One in every five young people has a sleep problem, so you're not alone. Getting enough sleep has become as important as eating vegetables and exercising regularly. It's very important for your body.‎ Most young people only get seven hours of sleep each night, when they actually need nine hours. And making up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping in on weekends doesn't really work. In fact, sleeping late on weekends may actually do you more harm than good, if you have sleep problems.‎ What happens if you don't get enough sleep? If your sleep problem continues for a few nights, you could suffer serious problems. Lack of sleep can affect learning and memory. Worse, if your sleep difficulties last a long time, that could lead to anxiety or depression (抑郁) . Therefore, you've got to have some healthy sleep habits. Below are some suggestions:‎ ‎●GO TO BED AT THE SAME TIME—including weekends, if possible.‎ ‎●WAKE UP AROUND THE SAME TIME EVERY MORNING When you sleep late just one morning during the week, it may disturb your body clock. This will make it hard for you to sleep that night.‎ ‎●DO SOMETHING RELAXING before going to bed.‎ ‎●EXERCISE DURING THE DAY. Don't exercise right before going to bed.‎ ‎●AVOID DRINKING ALCOHOL. Alcohol makes you excited. This prevents you from falling asleep or wakes you up during the night.‎ ‎●DON'T SMOKE. Smoking is always bad for the body. Smoking before bedtime keeps you awake.‎ If trying these tips over a couple of weeks does not help you, speak to your doctor. Do not take any sleeping pills without first asking your doctor. Many have strong side effects.‎ ‎21. According to the passage, if you have sleep problems for a few nights, you could be ________.‎ A. lonely B. serious C. forgetful D. depressed ‎22. The passage suggests that people with sleep problems should _____________.‎ A. eat vegetables and exercise regularly B. make up for lost sleep on weekends C. follow a fixed timetable for sleep D. sleep seven hours every day ‎23. We can learn from the suggestions that ______________.‎ A. getting up earlier one morning makes it easier to fall asleep that night B. listening to soft music before going to bed may help you fall asleep C. smokers and those who drink alcohol usually have sleep problems D. exercising in the evening will help you get to sleep ‎24. Which of the following is true according to the passage?‎ A. Sleep problems are serious among young people.‎ B. Sleeping late on weekends can make up for lost sleep.‎ C. Your eating habits will be broken due to lack of sleep.‎ D. You'll no longer have your sleep problem if you try the tips.‎ B Mountain lions live in mountainous areas of the western United States. Lately, however, people have reported seeing them in quiet neighborhoods all across the country! Usually considered shy and seldom seen, these lions are becoming more noticeable. In addition, the lions appear to be moving east. They were even reported in the suburbs (郊区) of Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago.‎ It seems certain that these "kings of the mountains" are moving. Why? Scientists are not sure. Some think that as the mountain lion population increases in the west, younger wild cats are leaving the area. These cats are searching for new homes and new places for food.‎ ‎"The young males are looking for new homes," says Lynn Sadler, who is the director of the Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento‎, ‎Calif.‎ “People tend to create too many barriers (障碍), such as buildings, fences, roads, and noise. As the mountain lions seek new places and food and water sources (水源) , these barriers get in their way.”‎ The sightings have made people increasingly watchful. Sometimes the "mountain lions" that people report seeing turn out to be large dogs or even house cats. But at least a few of the meetings have been real. The building of new roads, the growing of suburbs and the growing popularity of outdoor activities are all increasing the chances that people in various parts of the country may meet up with a mountain lion.‎ Because many people are concerned about the reappearance of the American lion, an expert outlined some ways they can avoid attracting the wild cats: Never leave pets or pet food outside; properly care for farm animals; and plan public land use to enable the lions to move safely from one place to another.‎ ‎"To be fair," says the expert, "mountain lions are trying to regain their homes. They were here first. Now we need to find ways we can live together."‎ ‎25. Mountain lions are moving probably because _______________.‎ A. the suburbs of big cities are peaceful and quiet B. more roads are being built into the mountains C. the number of the lions increases in the west D. young lions are seeking new partners ‎26. According to the passage, it is clear that _________________.‎ A. the reported sightings of mountain lions have not been proved B. people walking in the country may come across a lion C. fences have been built to protect the lions D. mountain lions prefer populated areas ‎27. To avoid attracting mountain lions, people are advised ____________.‎ A. to build more roads for the lions to move safely B. to keep a close watch on their farm animals C. not to stay outdoors D. not to raise pets ‎28. Which is the best title for the passage?‎ A. Mountain Lions in Unlikely Places B. Measures Taken to Avoid Lions C. Number of Sightings Going Up D. Mountain Lions Moving West C Letter to Editor of TV Weekly Dear Sir/Madam,‎ I read Alison Burnham's review of When we were 12, and I do not agree with her. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling.‎ The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn't catch the bus home — I had to walk. As a grown up, whenever I've been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I'm able to take control of the situation.‎ I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called "reality programmes". I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.‎ Yours faithfully,‎ Chris Daniels ‎29. What is Chris Daniels’ purpose of writing this letter?‎ A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.‎ B. To entertain other readers with old news pictures.‎ C. To express his appreciation of the programme.‎ D. To have his story told on the programme.‎ ‎30. Chris Daniels tells the story about the bus ticket to ____________.‎ A. describe how painful his early experience was B. draw a direct response from Alison Burnham C. show how the programme made him think D. teach the readers of TV Weekly a lesson ‎31. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus?‎ A. He should have told the conductor then. B. He should have been well treated.‎ C. He regrets going to school alone. D. He wishes it hadn't happened.‎ D T-shirts out; uniforms in School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A.‎ That's no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling (标记) that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the "wrong" clothes.‎ Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.‎ As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol (象征) of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.‎ Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's "creativity." First, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality (个性). They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they're in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.‎ ‎32. In Paragraph 1, the word "benefits" probably means ______________.‎ A. tasks B. messages C. differences D. advantages ‎33. From the passage we learn that uniforms in general ___________.‎ A. prevent the wearers from being laughed at B. help the wearers keep their duties in mind C. are seen as a symbol of power D. help to create social barriers ‎34. Some people are against school uniforms because _____________.‎ A. they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms B. they believe that uniforms will make students less creative C. they don't agree that uniforms can remove social barriers D. they think that school uniforms are too popular ‎35. The author would probably agree that __________.‎ A. it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or not B. students’ individuality may not come from school education C. students’ creativity is related to the clothes they choose D. school uniforms help to create equality among students 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,共10分)‎ ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ A healthy lifestyle is one that is full of healthy choices and behavior. It helps you maintains(keeps)good physical and mental health and helps you live longer.Generally speaking, the factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle may include physical activity, a healthy diet, low stress and healthy habits.______ 66_____‎ ‎ _______67______It helps to reduce your risk of diseases, such as cancer, and diabetes, and helps you control your weight. In children, physical activity also builds confidence. As part of a healthy lifestyle, adults should participate in moderate(适度的)to intense aerobic exercises and muscle-strengthening activities regularly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week, such as walking, bicycling, playing tennis.swimming or aerobics.‎ ‎ Eating a healthy diet can help you prevent disease and keep a healthy weight. This means eating a range of whole foods from the different food groups.Overall, a healthy diet is high in plant-based foods and low in sugary and high fat foods.Meat can be part of a healthy diet if it is eaten in moderation._______ 68______‎ ‎ Although stress is a natural human reaction designed to keep you out of danger, there are negative health consequences to dealing with long term stress.____ 69_____ In order.to manage your stress, you need to learn what causes it and how you can deal with it.Ways to deal with unavoidable stress include exercise and talking to family or friends. ‎ ‎ A healthy lifestyle includes healthy habits. This means protecting your skin from the sun, getting regular health check-ups and avoiding substance abuse.Smoking and tobacco use are unhealthy because they increase your risk of diseases such as cancer and heart disease.____70_____It can damage your liver, cause cancer and hurt loved ones.‎ ‎ A.Your lifestyle should support a healthy weight, so remain active daily.‎ ‎ B.These factors help reduce the risk of diseases and increase your quality of life.‎ ‎ C.For a longer and better life, put together your plan for a healthy lifestyle.‎ ‎ D.Eating a wide variety of healthy food will help cover your nutritional needs.‎ ‎ E.Physical activity is a key part of becoming and staying healthy.‎ ‎ F.Drinking too much alcohol is also an unhealthy habit.‎ ‎ G.Preventing and managing stress is important if you want to live a healthy lifestyle.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后面各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ A Shelter for the Homeless Last summer I was a volunteer (志愿者) at a shelter for the homeless, a place for homeless people to sleep at night.
