Some researchers think they have the answer, and it comes down to the structure of the food, not its chemical composition——a finding that could help rid some processed foods of chemical preservatives. Cream and butter contain pretty much the same substances, so why cream should sour much faster has been a mystery. Both are emulsions——tiny globules (小球体) of one liquid evenly distributed throughout another. The difference lies in what’s in the globules and what’s in the surrounding liquid, says Brocklehurst, who led the investigation. In cream, fatty globules drift about in a sea of water. In butter, globules of a watery solution are locked away in a sea of fat. The bacteria which make the food go bad prefer to live in the watery regions of the mixture. “This means that in cream, the bacteria are free to grow throughout the mixture,” he says. 14 When the situation is reversed, the bacteria are locked away in compartments (隔仓室) buried deep in the sea of fat. Trapped in this way, individual colonies cannot spread and rapidly run out of nutrients . They also slowly poison themselves with their waste products. “In butter, you get a self-limiting system which stops the bacteria growing,” says Brocklehurst. The researchers are already working with food companies keen to see if their products can be made resistant to bacterial attack through alterations(改变) to the food’s structure. Brocklehurst believes it will be possible to make the emulsions used in salad cream, for instance, more like that in butter. The key will be to do this while keeping the salad cream liquid and not turning it into a solid lump. 21. The significance of Brocklehurst’s research is that __________. A. it suggested a way to keep some foods fresh without preservatives B. it discovered tiny globules in both cream and butter C. it revealed the secret of how bacteria multiply in cream and butter D. it found that cream and butter share the same chemical composition 22. According to the researchers, cream sours fast than butter because bacteria _________. A. are more evenly distributed in cream B. multiply more easily in cream than in butter C. live on less fat in cream than in butter D. produce less waste in cream than in butter 23. According to Brocklehurst, we can keep cream fresh by _________. A. removing its fat B. killing the bacteria C. reducing its water content D. altering its structure 24. The word “colonies” (Line 2, Para.4)refers to _________. A. tiny globules B. watery regions C. bacteria communities D. little compartments B How can you help kids cope with (对付)stress? Proper rest and good nutrition can improve coping skills, so can good parenting. Make time for your kids each day. 14 Whether they need to talk with you or just be in the same room with you, make yourself available. Even as kids get older, quality time is important. It’s really hard for some people to come home after a tiring day of work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day -- especially if they’ve had a stressful day themselves. But expressing interest in your kids shows that they’ re important to you.舒中高二统考英语 第3页 (共12页) 舒中高二统考英语 第4页 (共12页) Help your child deal with stress by talking about what may be causing it. Together, you can come up with a few solutions. For example, he should cut back on after-school activities, spending more time talking with his parents or teachers, developing an exercise plan or keeping a journal. You can also help by predicting potentially stressful situations and preparing kids for them. For example, let a child know ahead of time, but not too far ahead of time, that a doctor’s appointment is coming up and talk about what will happen there. Keep in mind, though, that younger kids probably won’t need too much advance preparation. Too much information can cause more stress. Remember that some level of stress is normal. Let kids know that it’s OK to feel angry, scared, lonely, or anxious and that other people share those feelings, too. When kids can’t or won’t discuss these problems, try talking about your own concerns. This shows that you’re willing to handle tough topics and are available to talk with when they’re ready. If a child shows symptoms that concern you and is unwilling to talk, consult a counselor (顾问)or other mental health experts. Most parents have the skills to cope with their children’s stress. The time to seek professional attention is when any change in behavior continues to exist, when stress is causing serious anxiety, or when the behavior is causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home. 25. What is the purpose of the text? A. To share the author’s ideas on proper parenting. 14 B. To persuade parents to spend more time with their kids. C. To advise parents how to help their kids deal with stress. D. To seek different ways to help solve kids’ problems. 26. Why do some parents feel it difficult to spare quality time for their kids? A. Their kids are growing so fast. B. They have too much housework. C. Their kids are losing interest in them. D. They are tired out after work. 27. You are advised not to talk too much about a stressful situation in advance because ________. A. it does no good to your kids B. it doesn’t work in practice C. your kids may not feel stressed D. your kids don’t want to listen 28.What can we learn from the text? A. Normal people share the same feelings. B. It is normal for kids to have some stress. C. Kids should get rid of the negative feelings. D. Everybody feels angry, scared, lonely or anxious. C A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in the garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower. A biodegradable (生物可降解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle. Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and able to change shape. Overtime it can also break down into the soil without giving out any toxic (有毒的) 14 chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms nitrates (硝酸盐). These feed the seed and help the flower grow. Engineers have designed a small transparent window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. "We've only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time," said one scientist. As phone technology is developing so quickly people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists. "The seed is released and the flower grows in the pot so you don't have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it," said Kerry Kirwan. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain. 29. After you have finished using the new type of mobile phone, ________. A. the sunflower seed will come out and flower wherever you throw it B. the phone cover will break down easily in the soil which you bury it in C. it will be recycled by the manufactures D. it can recharge itself in an environmental friendly way 30. Which of the following is wrong about the cover of the new type of phone? A.It can provide useful fertilizer (肥料) for the sunflower seed after the mobile phone breaks down. B.It looks like normal plastics but it can break down. C.It can serve as the storage for the sunflower seed. D.It makes sure the seed only grows after the phone is thrown away. 14 31.We can infer from the story ________. A.the new type of mobile phone is already on the market. B.the new type of mobile phone will sell extremely well. C.recycling mobile phones is increasingly important to the environment. D.other flowers may be used in the new type of cell phone. D Certainly, a well-rounded education is the foundation from which all of us spring forth. I am grateful to the many incredible teachers who have inspired me to do greater things, and have fired my enthusiasm for everlasting learning! I have also been honored to have the most amazing teachers in all of my children's lives. These are extraordinary people who not only teach our children, but love them, challenge them, and provide an environment where a child learns how to learn. But, sometimes I wonder if the outline of our educational plan is lacking something. I watched the movie Easy A with my older daughter. The main character' s parents were loving, supportive, and built great confidence in their daughter and developed her ability to handle her own problems. There was a scene where the mother was speaking to the younger child and he announced that he received an "A" on his spelling test. She replied, "That' s great, honey, but everything has spell check these days. " It was funny --- but TRUE ! I don't mean that we shouldn't teach our children how to spell, but maybe some of our time should be spent educating them about the dangers of posting things on Facebook. Maybe we might want to spend time showing them how real life works - the credit card isn't free money - you will have to pay it back at sometime. Oh, and get this - they charge you for borrowing that money. Perhaps, we should spend some time on interpersonal relationships. I worry that our kids do not know how to relate to one another. Choosing a career is a “daunting” task. My daughter is in her second year in college and has changed her major twice. It' s not that she didn' t know what she wanted to do. What she "wanted to do" and the degree she chose did not match. 14 I have learned many college students do not know what they want to do because they haven' t seen what it looks like in the real world. Being a journalist in the real world looks very different from writing stories. Maybe if we spent some time exposing them to real life experience - maybe two or three courses in areas of interest in high school that give them a "feel" for what that particular field would look like, they might be better prepared. I do not know the solution, but it seems that it should at least be a topic of discussion. 32. Why does the author mention the movie Easy A? A. To prove the importance of book learning. B. To show the parents' ignorance of spelling. C. To lead to the topic he is going to talk about. D. To share with the readers his feeling about the movie. 33. The author believes that___________ A. students need to focus on the skills in learning. B. parents and school should be consistent in education. C. his daughter is smart enough to make her own choice. D. courses in areas of interest in high schools will benefit students. 34. The word "daunting" in Paragraph 6 probably means_____ A. discouraging B. specific C. rewarding D. regular 35. What is mainly discussed in the passage? A. Schools should prepare students for the real life. B. What students learn in school should be practiced in life. C. Life experience is of greater importance than school education. D. Students should spend more time discussing practical problems. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Roger Sperry and Robert Ornstein of the California Institute of Technology, Nobel prize winners, discovered that the human brain has two sides, and each side has different work to do. 14 The left side of the brain controls language and number and it analyses and reasons. 36 It controls our appreciation of music and our sense of rhythm. It is also the right side of our brain which daydreams. Leonardo da Vinci was the great painter and sculptor. He was also an architect, a scientist and an inventor! 37 When he invented machines he used both his imaginative ability and his analytical ability. 38 Albert Einstein enjoyed art, playing the violin and sailing. Indeed, Einstein said his scientific discoveries grew from his imagination rather than from analysis, reason and language. He said that written and spoken words were not important in his thinking. The story goes that Einstein was daydreaming one summer's day while sitting on a hill. He imagined that he was riding on sunbeams to the far distance of the universe. Then he found that he had returned to the sun. So he realized that the universe must curve(弯曲) . 39 He then used the left side of his brain to apply analysis, number and reason. And finally he used language to explain it. Traditional education in schools encourages us to use the left side of our brains. Language, number, analysis and reason are given more importance in our schools than imagination and daydreaming. Why don' t we give more value to visual thinking? Why jump on one foot if we have two perfectly good legs ! 40 We need to use our imagination to think of solutions to problems and to enjoy emotional and artistic experiences. And we need to be logical able to analyze and organize in order to survive day by day. A. We benefit by thinking creatively. B. We all need both sides of our brain. C. He got this idea by using his imagination. D. Great scientists and great artists are similar. E.He was considered crazy for his strange ideas. F.He used both sides of his brain within each activity. G. The right side controls our imagination and our understanding of space. An old man, with shoulders bent forward, walked slowly into the restaurant.
