My six-year-old son asked me if he could pray (祈祷). As we bowed our heads, he said, “God is good. God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream. And liberty and justice for all! Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman saying, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today even don’t know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why? I never!” Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I told him that he had done a good job and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman came to the table. He said, “I happen to know that God thought you were a great prayer.” “Really?” my son asked. “I’m sure,” the man replied. Then he added, “The woman never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul (心灵) sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my kids ice creams at the end of the meal. My son stared at it for a moment, and then did something I will never forget for the rest of my life. He picked up his ice cream and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes, and my soul is good already.” 5. The woman thought that ______. A. the boy was too young to pray B. the boy shouldn’t ask God for ice cream C. there’s something wrong with the boy D. the boy should keep silent before the meal 6. The boy cried because ______. A. he didn’t get the ice cream he asked for B. his mother was angry with him C. the other customers laughed at him D. it was rude to ask God for ice cream 7. In the author’s culture, it is common that ______. A. people pray before meals B. people ask God for certain food when praying C. ice cream is served before meals D. children needn’t pray before meals 8. Why did the boy give the woman his ice cream? A. He thought her soul was not good enough. B. He didn’t like eating ice cream. C. He ordered the ice cream for her. D. He wanted to make the woman happy. C Accepting and understanding other cultures is something that everyone needs to learn. Think of the world as a giant pizza. Without all the different vegetables, cheeses and meats, all you get is a tasteless pizza crust (面包皮). But when you put them all together, you get something very interesting, tasty, and good. So let’s break down the walls between cultures. One way to help break down the walls between us is to understand that many of our ancestors may come from the same place. Do you know what cultures you are from? Are you part Irish or mostly German? Did your grandparents or great-grandparents immigrate (移民) to your country? There is really no way to be completely sure where your first ancestors came from, but some scientists think that all people came from Africa. So how did they get all over the world? Well, back then there was a land bridge connecting Asia and North America, so they walked to Asia, Europe, and the Americas! Over time, the land bridge split up, and there was no way for people like Columbus to know that the Americas existed. Isn’t it cool thinking that maybe we’re all from the same continent? Even though we all came from the same place, now there are differences in the way we look depending on where our recent ancestors came from and who our parents are. If you find out where your parents and grandparents came from, you just might discover that you are from the same culture that you might be trying to avoid! 9. The author tries to prove that ______. A. we should respect people from other cultures B. all the continents were connected a long time ago C. Columbus found the new continent D. the land bridge did exist 10. The author takes a pizza for example in order to show that ______. A. we need different materials to make a pizza B. the differences of cultures make our world beautiful C. people from different cultures all like eating pizza D. a pizza will be tasteless without vegetables 11. The underlined phrase “split up” in the last paragraph is the closest in meaning to ______. A. cut into pieces B. separated C. rose D. came into being 12. What does the text mainly talk about? A. How to make a pizza. B. How to break down the walls between us. C. How to understand and accept other cultures. D. Where our ancestors came from. D “Please stand according to height!” the teacher calls out. Some kids might be sad, especially if they have to stand at one end or the other. For most kids, height isn’t something they can change, so what do you do if you think you are too tall or too short? It might be girls feeling too tall and boys feeling too short. If you are still worried about your height, talk to your parents and your doctor. Most kids don’t have a growth problem that needs help from a doctor, but it’s always OK to ask if you’re concerned. So for most kids, it seems like there’s not much to do but wait to see how it all turns out. But you can do something right now: Eat healthy food and take care of yourself. If you get enough nutrition, sleep, and exercise you need, you’re likely to reach your maximum potential (可能的) height. In other words, you’ll grow as tall as you were meant to grow. And even though you may hear people say it, taking extra vitamins or supplements that you can buy in a store won’t help you get taller. Just stick to a healthy diet if you want to be the tallest you can be! 学校 班级 姓名 考号 __________ 学校 班级 姓名 考号 __________ Kids who wish they weren’t so tall should still eat healthy food and take care of themselves. Eating less won’t make you end up any shorter unless you really starved yourself and made yourself sick. As they get older, most kids learn to feel comfortable with their height, whether they are tall, short, or somewhere in between. 13. The text mainly tells us ______. A. how to deal with the height problem B. how to grow taller C. how to keep healthy D. how to talk about height with others 14. The kids who have to stand at the end of the line might be sad because ______. A. they think it’s unfair B. they don’t want to follow the teacher’s instructions C. they are not satisfied with their height D. they think the teacher is making fun of them 15. According to the text, kids ______. A. can grow to a satisfying height by eating healthy food B. may stop growing by eating less C. can grow taller by taking some medicine D. should eat healthily no matter whether they’re too tall or too short 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Expressions about water are almost as common as water.__16__ The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them.
