Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.‎ War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!”Deafened(装聋的), I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.‎ The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for (要不是)a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I knew right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing(啜泣). Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose up in my heart.‎ Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I paid so much attention to my work that I even didn't notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, unbelievably. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me. “Thanks.” Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn't always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.‎ 1. What might be the best title for the story?‎ A.My Friend Kate B.Hard Work Pays Off C.How to Be Organized D.Learning to Be Roommates B You can use your smartphone to get even anything delivered(递送)directly to you almost immediately. The hardest part is if you should tip(付小费) to delivery drivers. Since, you know well that you should tip about 15-20% at restaurants, but do the same rules apply to delivery drivers?‎ The co-founder of Grubhub, Matt Maloney, pretty much set the standard for tipping delivery people in a Facebook post. He’s a strong supporter of tipping, and Grubhub’s website suggests a ‎$5 or a 20% tip. Maloney also said this number should go up if you order during a snowstorm.‎ However, most other delivery services say on their websites that tipping is not required. Some services, like Door Dash, do suggest no tip on their checkout window. Many, like Amazon Prime Now, allow customers to change their tip amount after their delivery has been received to reflect the quality of service. These companies help customers save money but delivery drivers are upset. They deal with bad weather, heavy traffic, extreme tiredness, and more, all for a $1 tip. Many feel that if you’d tip your pizza boy or girl, you should tip your delivery driver.‎ The Emily Post Institute (EPI)’s official suggestion falls in line with Maloney’s: “10-15% of the bill, or $2-5 for pizza delivery depending on the size of the order and difficulty of delivery.”‎ Just like servers in a restaurant, delivery drivers almost always rely on your tips for their income. Tipping is a long-standing cultural tradition in America. So, until drones (无人机) can deliver hot dogs straight to your door, it’s best to tip the people riding through the city at all hours to bring you hot fresh food.‎ 1. What do we know about tipping delivery drivers?‎ A. It is not widely accepted.‎ B. It upsets many delivery services.‎ C. It can’t reflect(反映)the quality of service.‎ D. It is a deeply rooted tradition in America.‎ 2. Which of the following suggests the highest tips in the passage?‎ A. The EPI. B. DoorDash. C. Grubhub. D. Amazon Prime Now.‎ 3. What is the author’s attitude to tipping delivery drivers?‎ A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned C. Disapproving. D. Supportive.‎ C More students than ever before are taking a gap-year (间隔年)before going to university. It used to be called the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated ( 起 源 ) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year.‎ This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics(统计数值) on university entrance provided by University and College Admissions Service(UCAS).‎ That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics(统计数值) are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete,‎ their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more matur(e he said.‎ ‎成熟)and responsible,”‎ But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship – young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to £15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure( 数 字 )increases to 90% during vacation periods,” he said.‎ 4. What do we learn about the gap year from the text?‎ A. It is flexible(灵活)in length. B. It is a time for relaxation.‎ C. It is increasingly popular. D. It is required by universities.‎ 1. According to Tony Higgins, students taking a gap year .‎ A. are better prepared for college studies B. know a lot more about their future jobs C. are more likely to leave university in debt D. have a better chance to enter top universities 2. How does Owain James feel about the gap-year phenomenon?‎ A. He's puzzled. B. He's worried. C. He's surprised. D. He's annoyed.‎ 3. What would most students do on their vacation according to NUS statistics?‎ A. Attend additional courses. B. Make plans for the new term.‎ C. Earn money for their education. ‎ Stress is a popular cause of major diseases affecting people worldwide. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime(一角硬币) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house.‎ Hesitantly he knocked at door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while “Would you please give me some … a drink of water?” the boy dare not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.‎ Years later the young woman became seriously ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation( 会 诊 ). When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. She used to be angry when I listened to it.‎ W: Wouldn't you be angry with her because of that, then?‎ M: No. I even miss her so much. I can just see her now, picking up the CD and trying to figure out what it's saying. That's why I listen to it so much.‎ Text9‎ M: So, I need a beginning, a middle, and a conclusion.‎ W: Yes. The beginning of your essay should include your topic. Explain more about the main idea in the middle. At the end, write what you think about the whole topic. Is that clear?‎ M: Not really. I still feel lost W: OK. First, pick something to write about. The subject of the essay is your favorite character in a story. Can you think of one?‎ M: Yes! Alice! ‎ W: Do you mean Alice from Alice in Wonderland?‎ M: Yup! She's my favorite of all time W: Very good. Now, what do you want to say about her? You can write about one of her adventures. Or you can talk about the strange creatures she meets, like the Mad Hatter or the White Rabbit M: I’ll write about the games she plays. That's more interesting to me!‎ W: Great! Just make sure you have a simple topic. It should be interesting, and it should also be easy for other students to understand and ask questions about Text 10‎ Welcome to the weekend news report!
