He had the poker face down to perfection, and even my mother acknowledged that, after decades of being with him, she still couldn’t always be sure when he was pulling her leg or not. While still quite young, my brother and I were still easily persuaded and, thus, perfect targets for our father’s brand of humor. He made regular trips to England to see his sister and, right before one such trip, he said that, while he was there, he would be dropping in on his friend, the Queen. “I’ll have her send you two a postcard,” he stated. What? Our father knew the Queen of England? We were struck at the thought of our father and the Queen being friends and the fact that she would be dropping us a postcard. And, sure enough, a few weeks later, it arrived: a postcard with a personal message for the two of us and, on the front, a photo of the queen, herself, which we thought she’d had taken just for us. We took our treasured postcard, in the queen’s lovely handwriting, to grade school to show off our enviable “You can’t possibly beat this” thing, directly from Her Royal Highness. We were immediately laughed at, but we stood our ground. After all, why would our father have lied? Even when he returned, he insisted it was from the Queen, confusing us even more. Over the years, we learned to look for the twinkle in his eye and the slight turn of the corner of his mouth when he could no longer keep the joke going. Thanks, Dad, for the fun. 21. What does the underlined phrase “pulling her leg” mean? A. playing with her B. joking with her C. dealing with her D. chatting with her 22. C If you are a modern art lover, you should be sure to drop by the Saatchi Gallery during your visit to London. The original gallery was opened by Charles Saatchi, a British art collector famous for founding the Saatchi and Saatchi advertising agency with his brother. It moved from its old location in St. John’s Wood to its new home in County Hall near the Thames in the spring of 2003. Anyone who has heard reports in the past of the often shocking but always thought-provoking (激发) works on display at the Saatchi Gallery will not be disappointed when visiting the gallery’s new location. Along with the exhibits of new British artists, the gallery still includes the works of Damien Hirst, the Chapman brothers, and Tracy Emin in its permanent collection. Of the artworks, one can see in the Saatchi Gallery, Hirst’s works are probably the most well-known. Hirst’s work first made headlines in the early 1990s when he created art from dead animals. Along with Hirst, the Chapman brothers, Dinos and Jake, also owe a certain amount of their fame to the Saatchi Gallery. It was through Saatchi that these two brothers came to public attention. At the gallery, visitors can see the brothers’ vision of Hell, made from 30, 000 plastic toy soldiers. Another artist featured at the gallery who has grabbed headlines with her art is Tracy Emin. In 1998, Emin gave rise to argument when she sold her messy, unmade bed to Saatchi as a work of art titled My Bed at £150, 000. Are any of these works really art? That is a question you will have to answer for yourself when you visit the Saatchi Gallery. Charles Saatchi himself says, “I don’t have any ground rules for judging art. Sometimes you look and don’t feel very comfortable with it—but that doesn't tell you very much. It doesn't necessarily reveal much about the quality of the work.” 28. What do the works of Damien Hirst, the Chapman brothers, and Tracy Emin have in common? A. The materials of the works are all from nature. B. They are all collected in the Saatchi Gallery permanently. C. All of the works are worth a large sum of money. D. The works are all created in the same year. 29. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. The original gallery was located near the Thames. B. Emin’s work, My Bed, was sold at a price of $ 150,000. C. The works in the Saatchi Gallery throw new light upon the definition of art. D. Works at the Saatchi Gallery are nothing but shocking ones. 30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. What you feel about a work of art may not help you to decide the quality of it. B. Charles Saatchi knows nothing about art at all. C. There is a universal standard to enable you to judge art by yourself. D. Visitors to the Saatchi Gallery are skeptical about the works shown there. 31. What’s the purpose of this passage? A. To emphasize the historical significance of the Saatchi Gallery. B. To persuade you to see the works of art created by Hirst C. To tell you something about Charles Saatchi. D. To introduce the Saatchi Gallery and some works of art there. D Boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music. Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (阳刚), the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to obey a stereotype, a US study says. Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to obey the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man". The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls. Tony Little, headmaster of the British boys-only school, Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills. But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys’ learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia. Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, besides, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around, James found. Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to obey a stereotype that men should be "masterful and in charge" in relationships. "In mixed schools boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported. 32. The author believes that a single-sex school ________. A. forces boys to hide their emotions to be "real men" B. encourages boys to express their emotions more freely C. helps to cultivate masculine aggressiveness in boys D. naturally enhances in boys the traditional image of a man 33. It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys _______. A. perform relatively better B. behave more responsibly C. grow up more healthily D. receive a better education 34. What does Tony Little say about the British education system? A. It fails more boys than girls academically. B. It focuses more on mixed school education. C. It fails to give boys the attention they need. D. It places more pressure on boys than on girls. 35. According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is ______. A. teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boys B. boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted C. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in D. teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 E Are you preparing any gifts for your friends now?__1__,but choosing a proper gift can be a big headache, because it takes a lot of time and effort to think of the right gift for someone.
