They began settling there in the late 1800s, first to work as peddlers(小贩)and later to work in factories.‎ Today the town is home to one of the largest Syrian populations in the U.S. It’s also a destination for newer arrivals — refugees fleeing the ongoing crisis in Syria. But Allentown residents don’t agree on whether the town should welcome more of them.‎ ‎______________________‎ The first stop for many Syrians arriving in Allentown is a neighborhood of flat-fronted row homes called the 6th Ward, which is home to Syrian restaurants and grocery stores.‎ That’s where Radwan Jarrouj landed in 1962. He’s active in local Syrian groups, and he tried to persuade Allentown to accept the refugees. However, he says he remembers Sept. 11 and empathizes with politicians who have grown anxious over welcoming more refugees.‎ ‎“Proceed with caution,” Jarrouj suggests.‎ Most of the old Syrian families in Allentown are from the Christian minority and support Syrian President Bashar Assad, while some of the people arriving now have fled the violence under his power.‎ An Emphasis On Screening The checking process for refugees takes an average of two years and involves investigating applicants’ stories and cross-checking whether any physical evidence ties them to terrorist groups.‎ But after the Paris attacks, some local politicians, including Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, say it needs to get even tougher. Todd Long, another Pennsylvanian, says he doesn’t know much about the background checks, but he doesn’t see any upside to accepting Syrian refugees. “If we were to find out tomorrow that 1,000 people are coming into the Lehigh Valley next week, people are going to think, ‘Well, what if one of them was an ISIS terrorist who got through the cracks?’ ” he says.‎ Since 2012, Allentown has resettled 138 Syrian refugees. And while there has been a national push to slow the pace of arrivals, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf both say they trust the checking process and will welcome more refugees.‎ ‎58. What is mainly discussed in the text?‎ ‎ A. The reason why Syrians immigrate to Allentown.‎ ‎ B. He is unwilling to accept Syrian refugees.‎ C ‎ Seeing in Stereo(立体的)‎ ‎ Have you wondered why you have two eyes and why they are set close together on the front of your face? The reasons are simple and important to the way you see the rest of your world.‎ ‎ Your eyes are like two small cameras. A camera catches an image of an object and records it on film. Similarly, when you look at something, each eye takes in what it sees and sends this image to the back of the eyeball. Because your eyes are set close together, they view the world from about the same height but from slightly different angles. Working as a team, the eyes send the images to your brain, which puts them together into a single, centered image.‎ ‎ Seeing in stereo means seeing with two eyes working together, which is called stereoscopic sight. This allows you to view the world in three dimensions, or 3-D. Seeing depth helps you to judge the distance between you and the objects you see and to adjust to the changing angle at which you see something as you move closer to or farther away from it. If images are coming from only one eye, however, only two of these dimensions—height and width---can be perceived. A world seen with one eye is thus two-dimensional, as in a photograph. ‎ ‎ Now consider why your two eyes are on the front of your face. Think of other animals with the same arrangement. They are all animals that hunt, like lions and wolves. Their eyes face directly in front of them. This provided a field of sight about 180 degree wide, which is called binocular sight. On the other hand, animals that are hunted have eyes on the sides of the head, which provides nearly 360-degree field of sight. In order to stay alive, they need to see things coming from the sides and ‎ from behind. However, without stereoscopic sight, they have difficulty determining how far a danger is. ‎ ‎ With sight both stereoscopic and binocular, humans share with animal hunters the ability to see from side to side and to accurately determine the distance. If you think it would be great to have another type of sight, perhaps with hundreds of tiny eyes like many insects do, think again! Each tiny insect eye sees only a tiny part. Besides, what if you needed glasses? Be glad for the eyesight that you have. ‎ ‎62. According to the passage, an eye is like a camera because both_______‎ ‎ A. can imagine objects ‎ B. provide centered images ‎ C. can record images ‎ D. work at the same height ‎63. Stereoscopic sight is a result of having_________.‎ ‎ A. hundreds of eyes, all seeing parts of an image ‎ B. two eyes close to one another that work together ‎ ‎ C. a three-hundred-sixty-degree field of sight ‎ D. one eye on either side of the head, each seeing a different image ‎64. The underlined word “perceived” in paragraph 3means________.‎ ‎ A. sensed B. taken C. understood D. set ‎65. The author implies “seeing in stereo” ________.‎ ‎ A. is similar to the way cameras work ‎ B. would be better for a wide field of sight ‎ ‎ C. is an ability humans are fortunate to have ‎ D. helps people have better sight than animals D ‎ I wanted to stop at a sporting goods store “Going Out of Business” sale we passed in the mall. “There’s nothing we need”, my husband’s usual ill-tempered male ‎ comment. “It’s all overpriced junk. If they had anything good they wouldn’t be going out of business.”‎ ‎ “But, it’s sporting goods. Could be some good deals for the grandkids. And, you like boats and fishing stuff. I’ve put up with that photo of your ‘dream-canoe’ stuck on the bathroom mirror for years now. Maybe you’d enjoy just looking around?”‎ ‎ “Are you crazy?” His eyes got funny and he said something like. “This loser store wouldn’t carry something like that. And I’m sure not going near those sucker crowds.”‎ ‎ I squared my chin and marched into the crowded store. Aisles and aisles of sporting equipment, boy toys were strung with huge blaring signs. CLOSING OUT SALE─Up to 80% OFF. NO REFUNDS.‎ ‎ Up and down the aisles I walked and explored, humming to myself and enjoying the excitement of a sale. All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store, in gleaming silver, full of lifejackets, paddles and fishing stuff, sat the exact canoe of my husband’s picture. I gasped and blinked three times. Yup. It was still there. The Supremo Numero-Uno blah, blah. My heart beat wildly. I made my way through the crowds, scrambled over junk in the aisles and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was─a little tattered (破旧的), with the manufacturer’s suggested retail price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. NO RETURNS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a “Hi. I’m Mathew” tag trying to hide out from bargain hunters. I grasped his sleeve. “Mathew. Tell me about this El Supremo canoe. What’s wrong with it? Why is it only $750?”‎ ‎ “Oh. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s brand new. We’re closing the store is all. It’s on clearance like everything else. I think that includes lifejackets, paddles and a bunch of fishing gear, too. I’ll go check.”‎ ‎ A few minutes later he came back and said, “I’m sorry ma’am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It’s supposed to be $4,750 for the whole package. I just talked to my Dad who is running the close-out. He said it was worth more than $8,000 regular price so it’s still a real good deal.”‎ ‎ I felt tears well up in my eyes. “Oh well,” I said sadly. “Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband’s dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He’s going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It’s been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. Just an old man’s silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to spend his retirement out fishing in a canoe,” my voice reduced and I turned and walked away. I was already at the mall door when Mathew caught up with me. “Do you have $750 plus $25 for delivery and a bit more for tax, ma’am?” I gasped. “Yes. Yes. That’s about all I have,” I said as I thought quickly about the eye surgery I was saving up for. “Well then, you just have your husband sitting on the front porch on Friday morning around 10 o’clock so he can be there when my Dad and I come to unload his new boat. We’ll even put a bow on it for his birthday.” I started to cry. My old hand shook and I had to squint (眯眼看) as I wrote out my cheque. Mathew swallowed hard.‎ ‎ “Ma’am. There’s something you should know. This store was my Grandpa’s. He ran it for more than 30 years. He always promised to retire one day. Said he wanted to spend time relaxing and out fishing in a canoe. He ordered this one, custom, for himself last year but, well, just never took the time off to use it.” He swallowed even harder. “My Grandpa died, sudden-like, just last week. He was only 68 years old. I think he’d be mighty happy that your husband will get this here canoe. My Dad thinks so too. You just have to make sure he uses it a lot, okay? Promise? ” I handed Mathew a Kleenex and we stood there together, quietly lost in our own thoughts for a moment, blowing our noses.‎ ‎ “I promise,” I said as I dashed off to look for my dear sweet husband.‎ ‎66. Many Chinese parents save up a lot of money for their children to purse an overseas education. Is it worth spending big to study abroad? You’re welcome to leave your views.‎ Futsanglung (UK) Sadly too many Chinese parents think a foreign education is best for their kids and expense is no problem. I often feel this is a mistake as the education a Chinese child gets in a foreign country is very different to what they are used to and they often struggle. Hopefully this will change. Chinese universities will improve and more bright kids will study in their home land in the future.‎ Arsa (Russia) I went to study abroad when I was 17. I went to UK from Russia. First year was a total waste. I was away from parental control for the first time and as it happens I met plenty of Russian students in my college and we spent most of our time shopping, hanging out at cafes and clubbing. We studied sometimes but it wasn’t until two years later that I realized that my English hadn’t improved. I had trouble understanding my lecturers and my assignments kept coming back with poor scores. I changed my mindset entirely and started studying hard. I stayed in UK for 10 years. It opened a lot of doors and introduced me to great people, so I’m all for studying abroad. But Chinese students do tend to stick together which does nothing for their English, or network building ─ biggest reason why you’d want to go abroad in the first place, besides getting a fancy certificate.‎ Chuck14 (Canada) Here in Canada I work with Chinese students who come here to go to high school. My wife and I find homestays for these students and watch over them and their homestay families for the entire time they are here. The student is not prepared properly to go into a stranger’s home and struggle with language and cultural barriers. We work to make it as easy for the student and their family as much as we can. One thing we emphasize to each student is the enormous opportunity they have to be immersed into a native English speaker’s home. Many times the student ‎ will feel lost for a while and stay shut in their room usually qqing or skyping back home to their friends. We see this as normal behavior for a while at least. Some students have planned out their futures with education and experience from abroad to take back to China. Others do not, I’m afraid, and obviously the experience will do them no good for their future. Although it is natural for all Chinese students to hang out together, so many of them miss out on the English opportunity in their homestay. We also encourage our homestay families that they seize an opportunity to experience China through their student. The experience alone is valuable for any teenager growing up and so I think it should continue.‎ Truth (US) There is a perception (or misconception) that American education is the best in the world. Chinese parents, who highly value education, therefore push their kids to American colleges. Increasingly, they are also sending their children overseas earlier, at junior or high school level. American education teaches critical thinking and creativity. Chinese education is based too much on memorization. This style of thinking, however popular, is not correct. The non-quantifiable forms of learning come from a student’s innate interest and appetite for the subject. Many great entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs never finished college. The mother can do nothing but stand behind the boy, depressed.‎ ‎ It is the exact reflection of lack of communication between parents and children. Several reasons contribute to it. First, the Internet provides us with a place where we can communicate with different people, in which case we are addicted to the virtual world and keep our distance from people around us. Besides, pressure from study drives us to seek excitement on the Internet. Also, parents, busy with their work, spare ‎ little time to stay with their children.‎ ‎ As far as I’m concerned, some effective measures should be taken by parents and children. In terms of children, we should cut back on the time when they play computers and be aware of the negative effects of the Internet. Parents and children should exchange their ideas and feelings regularly.‎ ‎ ‎ 听力原文 Text 1‎ W: Excuse me. The sign outside says 50℅ off select items. Can you show me which items are on sale? (6)‎ W: Well, you need to start out slowly. See if you can run a mile without stopping, and then start increasing your distance.‎ M: Okay. Do you think I should run on a running machine at the gym or outside?‎ W: Well, it depends on what you like. Running inside is nice because you can stay at a steady speed. But outside is nice, too, because you’re surrounded by nature and fresh air.‎ M: Maybe I’ll try running outside first and see how it feels. (7)‎ Text 7‎ M: I don’t know what happened.
