What do they usually do in their free time? You may feel curious about them. On April 8, a report came out on the lives of high school students in China, Japan, South Korea and the US. It surveyed around 6,200 students from the four countries last year. You will find the answers to many of your questions in this report. Who studies hardest? Chinese students spend the most time studying. Nearly half of Chinese students spend more than two hours on their homework every day. That’s much more than the US (26.4%), Japan (8.2%) and South Korea (5.2%). Who sleeps most often in class? Japanese students fall asleep in class most often. About 45% of them said they soon doze off in class. In South Korea, it’s 32%; in the US, 21%; and 5% in China. South Korean students don’t like taking notes. About 70% said they write down what the teacher says in class, many fewer than in Japan (93%), china (90%) and the US (89%). Who is the most distracted (走神)? American students are the most active in class, but also the most distracted: 64.2% said they chat with friends in class; 46.9% said they eat snacks in class; and 38.9% said they send e-mails or read unrelated books in class. What do they do after school? In their spare time, most Chinese students study or surf the Internet. Most American students hang out with their friends. Most Japanese students do physical exercise. Most Korean students watch TV. 1.What country isn’t mentioned in the report? A. The US. B. South Korea. C. Japan. D. India. 2.______of the Chinese students spend more than two hours on their homework. A.26.4% B.8.2% C.5.2% D.48.6% 3.The underlined phrase “doze off’ means_______. A. be half asleep B. get up C. eat snacks D. send emails B Megan, When I was younger, I spent all the money I got. After a couple of years, I began wondering why I didn’t have any savings. Things had to change. It was then that I opened a bank account. Even saving just a tiny amount each month can make quite a difference, so my advice would be for children like me to open an account and start saving. Jamie, My advice is “be strict and know what you’re spending”. I keep a budget(预算)so that I know exactly how much money I can spend on clothes, how much on going out with my friends and how much I need to save. I now work at the weekend, so I don’t have to ask, my parents for pocket money. Laura, I always get pocket money from my parents. I would buy a coffee here or a sandwich there, and even though that only means two or three pounds a time, it coon increases in amount. One day I made a list of all the things I’d bought that week and it really surprised me. I’d spent 30 pounds on, well, nothing really! I could give anyone advice, I would tell them to always ask themselves. “Do I really need this?” Olivia, My dad lost his job recently, so my pocket money stopped. Now I’m doing a part-time job on Tuesdays and Fridays. It isn’t a lot, but it is enough. Not only have I become more responsible about money and how I spend it, but I feel good that I’m working for it and not just relying on my parents. My advice to anyone is not to expect money to always be there and make sure you save enough for a rainy day. 4. According to the text, Megan_______. A. has always spent money wisely B. finds it hard to save any money C. puts some of her money in the bank D. doesn’t have to worry about money 5. Both Jamie and Olivia _______. A. have a part-time job B. get a lot of pocket money C. have opened a bank account D. spend a lot on clothes 6. Which of following would Olivia agree most according to the text? A. Saving money for possible future need. B. Asking more money from parents. C. Spending what we can spend today. A. Helping a friend when he needs money. 4. The text is mainly about ______. A. making money B. borrowing money C. raising money D. managing money C As prices and building costs keep rising, the“do-it-yourself”(DIY)trend(趋势)in the U.S. continues to grow. “We needed furniture(家具)for our living room,” says John Ross,“and we just didn’t have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house. Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $420.“I was deeply upset about it. Now I’ve finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself.” John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it-yourselfer”, you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don’t have time to take a course, there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself. 8. We can learn from the text that many married people_________. A. find it hard to pay for what they need B. have to learn to make their own furniture C. take DIY courses run by the government D. seldom go to a department store to buy things 9.When the writer says that Jim has a full-time job at home, he means Jim_________. A. makes shoes in his home B. does extra work at night C. does his own car and home repairs D. keeps house and looks after his children 10.Jim Hatfield decided to become a do-it-yourselfer when__________. A. his car repairs cost too much B. the car repair class was not helpful C. he could not possibly do two jobs D. he had to raise the children all by himself 11.What would be the best title for the text? A. The Joy of DIY B. You Can Do It Too! C. Welcome to Our DIY Course D. Ross and Hatfield Believe in DIY D The sun is going to expand into the orbit of Mercury (水星) according to scientific calculations, which will result in the entire Earth catching fire, destroying all life. In order to survive, the United Earth Government prepares 10,000 giant engines on Earth to drive it away from its original orbit. The whole trip is expected to last 2,500 years. This imaginative tale is at the heart of the science-fiction movie The Wandering Earth. The original novel was written by Liu Cixin, one of China’s most outstanding science-fiction writers and a prize winner of the Hugo Award in 2015 for his novel The Three-Body Problem. Perhaps thanks to Liu’s fame, as well as the huge marketing efforts of the movie team, The Wandering Earth posted ticket sales of 670 million yuan when it was shown on the first day. More importantly, The Wandering Earth is the first “made-in-China” science-fiction movie on the big screen, as the director, Guo Fan, is also Chinese. As a fan of Liu, having read almost all of his science-fiction books, I should mention the movie follows a rather different form from his novel. Actually, it only borrows from the novel the idea of the Earth having to escape the solar system. That’s just the point. It means Chinese movie production teams have grown enough to develop new ideas on the creative basis of science-fiction writers, while the writers are willing to work together with movie productions so that the film results in the best possible performance. Liu may be a highly regarded science-fiction writer in China, but he is not the only one. There are many writers with rich imaginations, and their works can be adapted into movies, too. Someone has predicted that 2019 will mark the starting year of success for Chinese science-fiction movies. Only time will tell whether that prediction will come true. But if more professional movie teams and creative writers could work together, we can certainly expect more success for the domestic (国内的) science-fiction movie industry. 12. Why does the Earth have to escape from its original orbit in the story? A. Because the sun is about to hit the Earth. B. Because its original orbit will be occupied by Mercury. C. Because the giant engines’ strong power will drive it away. D. Because it has to avoid being destroyed by the coming disaster. 13. What can we learn about the movie from the passage? A. It is adapted from a science-fiction novel. B. Its author was once awarded for The Wandering Earth. C. It achieved huge success mainly because of its author’s fame. D. Its director Guo Fan is also a famous science-fiction writer in China. 14. What does the underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refer to? A. The unexpected success of the movie. B. The great success of the original novel. C. The creative adaptation from the novel. D. The imaginative idea from the novel. 15. What does the author think of the future of Chinese science-fiction movies? A. There is a long way to go. B. They will definitely success. C. They have great potential. D.
