White had two reasons for making this journey. First of all, he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity, which he did. He raised£70,000 for the British charity, Oxfam. White's second reason for making the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not. White set off from Trafalgar Square, in London, on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later. He spent more than 1,300 hours in the saddle(车座)and destroyed four sets of tyres and three bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East, India, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Amazingly, he did all of this with absolutely no support team. No jeep carrying food, water and medicine. No doctor. Nothing! Just a bike and a very, very long road. The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts, through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45 degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road. In Iran, he was chased by armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had. The worst thing that happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia. For 1,000 kilometres he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end. Now Mr. White is back and intends to write a book about his adventures. 21.When Phil White returned from his trip, he . A. broke the world record B. travelled about 1,300 hours C. destroyed several bikes D. collected money for Oxfam 22.During his journey around the world, Phil White . A. managed to ride against the wind in Australia B. experienced the extremes of heat and cold C.fought heroically against robbers in Iran D. had a team of people who travelled with him 23.Which of the following words can best describe Phil White? A. Imaginative. B. Honest. C. Determined. D. Modest. B Tracking the virus Avi Schiffmann was always fascinated (着迷的) with the digital (数字的) world. Coding (编码), computing ... he loved them all. In the third grade, he coded a website with stick figures (简笔画). In middle school, he coded video games. Now, at 17, Schiffmann has coded a highly visited website that follows cases of COVID-19, the disease which is now threatening the world. Living in Seattle, US, Schiffmann coded the coronavirus tracking website ncov2019.live when the cases were first reported in China. Since then, it has spread to about 200 countries and regions, and has officially been termed as a pandemic(大流行病) by the World Health Organization. Realizing how such a major world event has shaken everything from the economy to sport, Schiffman knew that it was his duty to do something. “I noticed that finding reliable, current statistics about the disease could be difficult,” Schiffmann said. “I thought I could make something better than what some officials were doing, so I made a website.” His website provides the latest data on the number of confirmed (确诊的) cases, serious cases, deaths and recoveries, both worldwide and in individual countries. The site also includes an interactive (交互式的) Google map, travel advisories and information on the disease and its prevention. The site has gained more attention than he expected. By March 2020, over 40 million people had visited Schiffmann's website. On March 16, he posted on his Twitter that he had relocated (迁移) the site to a larger server to compensate (补偿) for all the traffic. “It has been visited by every single country on the planet by now," he said. Jody Wong, a PhD student at the University of Buffalo, US, said that she regularly refers to the website. “It's particularly useful for researchers like myself who study risk and science communication," Wong said. Lila Shroff, 18, Schiffmann's fellow schoolmate, was impressed by his drive. “He is hardworking, passionate, and genuinely cares about making the world a better place," she said. Although he has been offered internship (实习) and job opportunities because of his great website, Schiffman said he doesn't code for the attention, but for the love and the meaning behind it. “If you put your mind to it, you can make something like what I did," Schiffman said. “You just have to have the motivation (动力) to want to change the world.” 24. Why did Schiffman decide to create the website ncov2019.live? A. To provide people with the latest, reliable pandemic data. B. To help the government update information accurately. C. To collect data about the pandemic for medical research. D. To raise money for controlling and preventing the virus. 25. What doesn't the website ncov2019.live include? A. Travel advisories. B. An interactive Google map. C. The latest data of COVID-19 suspected cases. D. Information about the prevention of the disease. 26. What do Paragraphs 7 mainly talk about? A. How Schiffman improved his website. B. How impressive Schiffman's website is. C. The challenges facing Schiffman's website. D. Different opinions of Schiffman's website. C You may have heard the term self-awareness, but what is it and why does it matter? Being self-aware can influence how you feel in your job and in your personal life. Daniel Goleman takes that connection much further, saying self-awareness is the key to success. He describes self-awareness as“knowing one's internal(内在的)states ,preference and resources”,and then monitoring that “inner world” information as it comes up. If you can be as aware of your feelings and thoughts, you’ll be better able to deal with new situations. Because you know yourself better, you’ll be more accepting of yourself, your thoughts and your feelings, Goleman says. But self-awareness doesn't stop at how you see yourself. It's also understanding and acknowledging how others see you. Tasha Eurich, an organizational psychologist, explains that self-awareness has two parts — internal and external(外部的). Internal self-awareness means we can clearly see our own values, thoughts, passions and feelings. External self-awareness is clearly seeing how others see us. People who are externally self-aware tend to be better leaders. So how do you know if you're self-aware or not? Eurich developed a short online quiz to help. You're not the only one who has to take it. Someone who knows you well also has to answer questions about you. In a recent TED Talk, Eurich refers to self-awareness unicorns. This group makes up only a small part of all the people she has studied. These are people who not only believe they are self-aware, but other people who know them would agree. Additionally, these unicorns would say they have improved their self-awareness in their lives and again, those who know them well would agree. Thankfully, anyone can become more self-aware, as long as they're willing to devote some time and effort to the cause. 27. According to Daniel Goleman, a self-aware person ________. A .feels content with his life B .has a burning desire for success C .handles his self-information well D .avoids challenging new situations 28. In Eurich's theory, what helps make a better leader? A .Clear thinking. B .Internal self-awareness. C .Sharp understanding. D .External self-awareness. 29. How does Eurich's quiz assess one's self-awareness? A .By setting criteria for answers. B .By measuring others' reactions. C .By analyzing quiz-takers' questions. D .By matching internal and external opinions. 30. What can be inferred about unicorns from the 5th paragraph? A .They are rare talents. B .They fail to get approval. C .They are born experts. D .They try to please others. 第二节(共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Plan a Budget-Friendly Summer Vacation It’s never too early to start thinking about your summer vacation. Deciding where to go and what attractions to see can actually be a fun and exciting part of the experience—particularly when you find ways to save your travel dollar. 31 ● Rethink your “summer vacation”. If your summer vacation window is wide open, why not skip July and August? The flights and accommodations are about 25% cheaper in the spring or early fall. If you must travel during the busy season, you can still save by being flexible. 32 Flying out on a Tuesday instead of a Friday could save you a bit of money, and flying in the afternoon will likely be cheaper than a morning flight. ● 33 It’s always in your best interest to book your summer vacation early. If you plan on flying to your destination, for example, it will be much easier to find seats on your preferred flights if you book in March than if you were to wait until the last minute. The same applies to hotels, where prices are based on supply and demand. ● Use the right websites. There are a lot of websites competing for your travel dollar. 34 For example, when you make five reservations with Booking. com, you can have access to their “Genius Program” which gives you 10% off as well as early check-in and late check-out. ● Consider a tour. With so many places to see and things to do, planning a trip can wear you out quickly. 35 Seasoned tour operators, such as Trafalgar, take the stress out of travel so all you have to do is show up and enjoy yourself. More importantly, a guided vacation represents a significant saving. A. Book in advance. B. Plan your flights. C. Choose the one that offers the best service. D. In that case, a tour is a fantastic choice. E. That competition has led to many benefits for travelers. F. Here are tips to plan a summer vacation within your budget. G. When booking flights, choose the least popular travel times. 第三部分:语言运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 When Marcus, a homeless man, walked into a small cafe, begging for spare change, he didn’t get 36 . However, an increasing number of experts argue that the colors we choose affect our mood, our career prospects(前景) and even our health. The power of color has been used for centuries and we should be making the most of it in our lives. Color affects us to a greater degree than most of us realize. It is used increasingly by psychologists and therapists for influencing mood and state of mind, and for various types of treatments when we are ill. Some people even believe that the blind can benefit from the “vibration”(共鸣、心灵感应) that color gives off. Companies use color to great effect to encourage us to buy their products. For example, purple is seen as creative and mixes well with red, to show that a company has ideas and the power to make them happen. Orange and blue are also recommended colors for companies to use, because orange is the color of communication and blue suggests safety and security. So this could be a particularly good combination. Companies have found certain colors ‘speak’ to specific age group. They often use red to attract younger people to their products, for example, as it is vibrant(充满生气的) and more youthful than colors like gold and navy, which older customers seem to prefer. Wearing different colors can affect how you feel and how others react to you, so it is important to consider this when deciding what to wear in the morning. If you want people to take you seriously, then wearing navy or black is good. Blue would also be helpful for an interview or oral examination because it relaxes you and makes you feel calm. Red gets you noticed by everyone and makes you,the wearer, feel energetic, but be careful, as it can raise your pulse rate and not everyone wants this effect. So think carefully before you leave the house. The colors you choose are a powerful tool. Are you making the right impression— on yourself and on others? I'm more than willing to help, so I'm writing to share some tips with you. For self-protection, it is strongly recommended that you stay at home, keep a balanced diet and do exercise regularly. To add some fun to your life, you should take up some new hobbies. As for online learning, you may find yourself distracted from time to time. To cope with the problem, try setting a limited time for every task and rewarding yourself once it’s done, which can help you stay focused.
