B Customers chat, read the newspaper and order sandwiches and drinks at August First Bakery & Café in Burlington,Vermont, but there’s something different here. “I was here working on my laptop when I looked over and saw that there was a sign that said ‘laptopfree,’ ” says Luna Colt,a student at the University of Vermont. During a recent visit,Colt was shocked that using her computer was against the rules. When owner Jodi Whalen first opened it four years ago,she offered free Wi-Fi to customers. Students like Colt went there in large numbers and started typing away and staying all day.“We saw a lot of customers come in,look for a table, not be able to find one and leave,” Whalen says. “It was money flowing out of the door for us.” That’s why Whalen decided there’d be no more screens. It was a gradual move. She started by shutting down the Wi-Fi two years ago. Then, the café banned screens during lunch. “A lot of people were bummed out,” Whalen says. “But we actually saw our sales increase.” What’s socially acceptable when it comes to using a laptop in public? Luna Colt thinks it’s about how much money you spend. “You should buy something every two hours if you’re going to be here and just work all day,” Colt says. As long as you’re being a good customer, she says, there’s nothing wrong with working on a laptop. Not quite, according to Whalen. “It’s less about how much a laptop user buys, and more about table space. Even if they think they’re a good customer because they buy food, they’re still here for long hours,” she says. “To walk into a place and see people looking at their screens with a blank stare,it takes away the community aspect of it—of you being in a place with other people,” Whalen adds. 24.Why is August First Bakery & Café different? A.Customers are not allowed to use their laptops. B.Those who visit the café are often very strange. C.It offers unusual sandwiches and drinks. D.It is only open to university students. 25.The underlined words “bummed out” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “ ”. A.grateful B.fortunate C.disappointed D.frightened 26.We can infer from the text that Luna Colt . A.works part-time in Jodi Whalen’s store B.might not be popular with Jodi Whalen C.likes the food in August First Bakery & Café D.will not work on a laptop in public any more 27.What’s the main idea of the text? A.It is good for our health to stay away from Wi-Fi. B.A café owner improves sales by saying no to laptops. C.A university student shows how to be a good customer. D.People are efficient while working on a laptop in a café. C Bright red post boxes, the Queen and queuing—what do they all have in common? They are all important parts of British life. At least I thought so. However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a traditional characteristic of the British,is no longer tolerated by people in the UK,according to a survey done by British bank Barclays. Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal. During World War Ⅱ,everyone had to queue up to receive their daily food supplies. In fact,if you didn’t stand up and wait in line with all the others,it was seen as uncivilized(不文明的). The famous English double-decker buses, with only one entrance, might also help explain why queuing was seen as part of British life. Almost always, there is a queue to get in. But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed past by the Spanish, the Italian or the French as they queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one entrance to their buses, which explains their more relaxed attitude to the queue. Two minutes is now the longest time most British people are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly,is the main reason why British people are no longer prepared to queue? “Used to buying without delay, customers are even giving up buys rather than wait their turn,” says Stuart Neal of Barclaycard. “Shoppers are also less likely to queue for long if the item they are buying is of low value.” Perhaps I will have to replace “queuing” with “impatience” in my list of things I relate to the British. 28.What can we learn about the tradition of queuing in Britain? A.It was a product of the slow pace of life. B.It was a long time tradition as old as the Queen. C.It was considered a symbol of a civilized behavior. D.It has made the British different from other Europeans. 29.According to the passage, the British gradually stopped queuing because . A.they prefer shopping online B.they follow the example of foreigners C.British buses have more than one entrance D.the Internet has changed their way of life 30.It can be learned from the text that . A.the British get impatient with queuing for long B.the British have to queue to receive foods C.the British like to eat in foreign restaurants D.the British prefer to take double-decker buses 31.The author’s main purpose of writing the passage is . A.to tell us the influence of the Internet on the British ways of life B.to compare the cultural differences between Britain and other European countries C.to talk about the changes in the attitude to queuing in Britain D.to report his research on the British ways of life D Vinegar is great. It makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even clean your windows with it. And now, according to scientists,it may even help the planet’s population survive climate change. Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan have found that growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower. The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis,a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in droughtlike conditions,it produced a chemical called acetate(醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar. After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants, before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive. Jong Myong Kim,coauthor of the study, tells Popular Science magazine that he’s already been in touch with people all over the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from flower growing companies to amateur gardeners. Although at this point keeping thirsty plants alive isn’t as easy as just pouring vinegar over them,Kim says he and his team are working on making the process as simple as possible. “Now we are trying to cooperate with some farmers, and also some companies,to make a method to apply this system,” he says. And for those of us who always forget to ask our neighbors to water our plants when we go away, hopefully this means the end of returning home from a trip to find our favorite flowers have died. 32.What is mentioned as a feature of the Arabidopsis? A.It produces acetate in wet conditions. B.It is mainly composed of acetate. C.It can survive in nowhere but desert. D.It can be tolerant of drought. 33.The scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants to . A.find a simple way of keeping the crops of farmers alive B.add acetate to the soil of other plants to stop watering C.check the effectiveness of the acetate to resist drought D.treat the dried-up plants by adding acetate to them 34.What is the author’s attitude to the discovery? A.Objective. B.Unsupportive. C.Indifferent. D.Optimistic. 35.What may be the best title for the text? A.Vinegar May End Hunger B.Vinegar Keeps Plants Living Forever C.How to Survive Climate Change D.Plants Need Water 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Although problems are a part of our lives,it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or another, you’ll have to stand up and say,“Problems,I don’t want you in my life.” 36 Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children—the list goes on. Apart from these, the inner conflicts within ourselves work, too. These keep adding to our problems. Problems come in different shapes and colors and feelings. But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems. Talk. It really helps. What most of us think is that our problems can be understood only by us and that no talking is going to help. 37 Talking helps you move on and let go. Write down your problems. 38 When you write down your problems, you are setting free all the tension from your system. You can try throwing away the paper on which you wrote your problems. By doing this, imagine yourself throwing away the problems from your life. Don’t lose faith and hope. No matter what you lose in life, don’t lose faith and hope. Even if you lose all your money,family...you should still have faith. 39 Your problems aren’t the worst. No matter what problems you get in life, there’re another one million people whose problems are huger than yours. 40 Your problems might just seem bigger and worse, but in reality they can be removed. Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a way out. A.Tell yourself:When they can deal with them, why can’t I? B.With faith and hope, you can rebuild everything that you lose. C.Of course,we’ve been fighting troubles ever since we were born. D.We can often overcome the problem and achieve the goal by making a direct attack. E.Having a personal diary can also be of huge help if you don’t want a real person to talk with. F.When we have a problem,a pressing, critical, urgent, lifethreatening problem, how do we try and solve it? G.But the truth is that when you talk about it,you’re setting free the negative energies that have been gathering within you. When I became an amputee(被截肢者) at age 29,I was forced to rethink the idea of physical perfection. Bruce, a boy of nine years old, with his little sister Alina, six years old, wanted their mother to be one of them. But they were too young to get a job, even if a part-time one. What could they do? There was only one week left. They felt sad whenever they thought their mother would spend her Mother’s Day without carnations(康乃馨). Money is hard to make. Buying a bunch of carnations would cost a large sum of money for them. One day when they were wandering at the street, they heard Mr. Green was complaining that he had no time to wash those soda pop bottles. It is a kind of soda pop sold in bottles and the bottles can be washed and filled again. Mr. Green ran that grocery shop by himself, so he had no time to wash them. “Would you like to try, Alina?” Bruce asked her sister suddenly. Alina nodded her head without hesitation. After all, both of them knew that maybe it was an opportunity for them to make money for the flowers. They walked a few steps and came near Mr. Green. They looked up at Mr. Green and asked whether they could help him to wash those bottles. Mr. Green looked at them curiously until he was told the reason. He agreed and promised that he would pay 0.1dollar for every bottle. Bruce and Alina were very happy even though they knew they would have a busy week. They came to Mr. Green’s shop in the next seven days when they came back from school. On the morning of Mother’s Day, they got the pay—6.1dollars.The boy also had 0.3dollar saved. So with a total of 6.4 dollars they walked about a mile to where a flower shop was located. When they came inside, someone asked what they wanted. W:Good idea. I think I will. Text 10 W:OK,everyone. Today’s presentation is by Nathan. Start when you’re ready,Nathan. M:OK.Hello,everyone. Our presentation is called A Smaller World and it’s about technology and cultural change. The talk focuses on technology that makes the world smaller. First of all,can you imagine life without cars and planes? Before the invention of these means of transport, people could only travel by train or boat, and they couldn’t travel very fast. Now,with cars and planes,we can travel farther and faster. Some people even live in one country and work in another because they can fly to work. Before we move onto the next type of technology,it is important to remember that planes and cars do have their disadvantages. They can be dangerous and they cause a lot of pollution, and this also changes the way we live. OK. Second, communications technology, like television and the Internet, certainly makes the world smaller. We stay in our house or office, but we can see news and shows from all around the world. With the Internet,we can write and chat to people all over the world. But nowadays, people spend more time using the technology than they do meeting other people. That day,I was wandering around the market when suddenly a beautiful looking USB came to my sight. Then without hesitation,I bought it,only to find it out of function after using it just for a time or two. What’s worse, all my files in it were lost. So angry was I that I even promised myself never to go there again. As far as I’m concerned, the goods of poor quality should be kept away from the Flea Market. Hope it can get better and better. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 读后续写(满分25分) “But, your money is not enough!” said the shop assistant. “Even for the smallest bunch?” Bruce asked quickly and eagerly, not believing his ears. “Not enough!” the shop assistant answered clearly, with the explanation that carnations were the most expensive flowers these days because of Mother’s Day. They were too disappointed to hear that! Bruce hopelessly put the money back into his pocket. “Wait a moment, please!” another gentleman waved to them. “I just have some carnations on sale which are a little small but pretty. Would you like to have a look? Only two dollars! ”Bruce nodded at once. “Just a minute!” He went in the back and came out with a bunch of carnations with paper wrapping around the pot. He took only two dollars, and also gave a Mother’s Day card as a gift. “Thank you very much,” Bruce bowed to the gentleman and they walked home proudly carrying the flowers for Mum. They couldn’t wait to see her smiling face.
