To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test. Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort. Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanford’s graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future. It wasn’t always like that, though. It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. It’s the first big step to making your life your own. So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He, too, felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of: uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending, of course, since he certainly turned out well. This doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t attend college, but rather that they shouldn’t worry so much. You’ll get where you need to go, even if your path is a bit more winding(蜿蜒的)than you’d like. Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be, which restates the point: don’t panic. One particular part of his speech stayed with me. Steve Jobs quoted(引用)the saying “Stay hungry, stay foolish” and it has become my motto. Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool, no matter how much you’ve learned or experienced. There is always more to explore. Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated. Steve Jobs’s level of success is attainable, and I aim to prove that. With the will power to go into the world living every day like it’s my last and allowing the future to take care of itself, I will do great things. In the last moments of my life, I’ll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for. 24.It is suggested in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that _________. A. Steve Jobs didn’t attend college B. Steve Jobs failed because of his decision C. The author is a college student D. The author cares much about his future 25.What did the author gain from Jobs’s speech? A. Courage to drop out of school. B. Confidence in defeating Jobs. C. Bravery to face uncertainties. D.Interest in computer industry. 26.What did NOT Steve Jobs encourage students to do in his speech? A. Be content with what they know. B.Have the desire to learn more. C. Stay calm in the face of hardships. D. Be modest so as to learn more. 27.The passage is mainly about _________. A. the wisdom drawn from a speech B. the most impressive quote in life C. a memorable meeting with Jobs D. an experience of a speech C Hawking died early Wednesday at his home in England at the age of 76. Throughout his career as one of the world’s most recognizable cosmic(宇宙的) thinkers, he regularly threw himself into pop culture’s comedic ring with cameos(客串)on programs such as The Simpsons and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. These appearances defined(使明确) Hawking’s personal life as much as his universe-shaking theoretical work. Humor, however, was not just one side of his personality, but a key to overcoming the disease he struggled against since 1963. “Keeping an active mind has been vital to my survival, ashas been maintaining a sense of humor,” Hawking said in a 2013 documentary. “I am probably better known for my appearances on The Simpsons and on The Big Bang Theory than I am for my scientific discoveries.” At 21, Hawking was diagnosed with a condition similar to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(肌萎缩性侧索硬化症), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. According to the ALS Association, “Half of all people affected with ALS live at most three or more years after diagnosis. Twenty percent live five years or more; only ten percent will live more than ten years.” The disease would eventually shut down Hawking’s motor functions, making him speechless and unable to move without a wheelchair. Doctors initially(最初) said he would be dead in two years. His condition, however, proved to be a rare slow-acting version. But Hawking fought through his worse physical state, rising to a position as a celebrated professor of mathematical at the University of Cambridge and altering the popular conception of physics with his 1988 bestseller, A Brief History of Time. “When I turned 21, my expectations were reduced to zero,” he said in a TV show. He added, “It was important that I came to appreciate what I did have. It’s also important not become angry, no matter how difficult life is, because you can lose all hope if you can’t laugh at yourself and at life in general.” 28.What was Hawking like according to the text? A. He was kind and brave. B. He was humorous and strong-minded. C.He was friendly and adventurous. D. He was shy and uncommunicative. 29.How did Hawking deal with ALS? A. He did further research into the disease. B. He did more exercise and spoke a lot with others. C. He kept a positive attitude towards his disease. D. He went to hospital to have a health check regularly. 30.What can we know from the text? A. ALS is a common disease in England. B. Doctors once gave up treatment for Hawking. C. Playing roles in comedy was Hawking’s favorite. D. It’s almost a wonder that Hawking can survive the disease. 31.What can be learnt from the story of Hawking? A. Lost time is never found again. B. Laughter is the best medicine. C. Everything comes to him who waits. D. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. D Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship. Different cultures stress the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries, like the UK or France, people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafe rather than at the office. Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion, instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary. Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values, however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly. People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other. 32. What’s the probable meaning of the underlined word “stress”? A. To draw special attention to. B. To ignore. C. To laugh at. D. To get close to. 33. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that ________. A. the English prefer to make long speeches B. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature C. even talk and silence can be culturally different D. too many words are of no use 34. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better? A. By accepting different habits. B. By recognizing different values. C. By sharing different ways of life. D. By speaking each other’s languages. 35. What would be the best title for the text? A. Cross-Cultural Differences B. Multicultural Environment C. How to Understand Each Other D. How to Build Up a Relationship 第二节 (共5小题 ;每小题 1分 ,满分5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项(选项中有两项为多余选项),并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 How to Have a Successful Teenage Life Everyone wants to succeed in their life, don’t they? She is not dangerous and probably very scared. (19) Please call the news station or local zoo if you see her. Next on our report is the local school’s decision to add two weeks to the school year. (20) After long-term research, the school director decided that teachers don’t have enough time to teach the required subjects. So, the school year will now finish at the end of June. (20) Well, that’s all we have for tonight. Thanks again for watching, and we’ll see you next time!查看更多
