Who is Toastmasters open to? Many people think Toastmasters is open only to those who wish to be professional speakers, but that is not true.Toastmasters is open to the public at large.Any person who wishes to improve his public speaking is welcome. And also, those who just want to increase their overall self-confidence are encouraged to attend. How can Toastmasters help you? Joining Toastmasters,a person will learn different methods of communicating what he really wants to say,and equally important,he will learn what the audience expects so he can send that message to them in an organized way. Some people are comfortable around friends, but when they appear before a group they don't know, they get nervous. The organization helps its members to get calm and organize thoughts, and express them in an effective way. Most often, people assume that when one is listening,he is also paying attention. This is not always true. Many times people are waiting for their turn to speak and are not really listening at all.Toastmasters can develop a person overall in organizing their thoughts, getting information from others and receiving effective feedback(反馈)。 How does Toastmasters train people? Toastmasters has a way of learning by doing. The Toastmasters International Organization provides a menu called the basic menu because it gives a guideline for the development of speeches. These speeches can meet different purposes. For example, one might need voice training;another might be to organize his thoughts or develop use of humor in speeches. There is an eight-week program for young people and also an eight-week speech course offered for adults. As a person continues to give speeches and improve,he progresses from the point of being fearful to stand before a group to the point where he can speak to any group of people with confidence. 21.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.Toastmasters is a club only for professional speakers. B.Toastmasters was set up in 1924 by Ralph Smedley. C.Toastmasters was originally set up to train speaking skills. D.Toastmasters is a local organization headquarter in California. 22.Why in many cases aren't people really listening at all? A.Because they are too nervous. B.Because they are organizing their thoughts. C.Because they are waiting for their turn to speak. D.Because they are not interested in the talking. 23.What is the purpose of the passage? A.To call on people to join Toastmasters. B.To offer some tips on giving speeches. C.To give a general introduction to Toastmasters. D.To show the benefits of effective speaking skills. B People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions--and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why. Rachael Jack,University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀的) across a face as Westerners do,Easterners fix their attention on the eyes. "We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions," Jack said."Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect(忽略)the mouth." According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations. The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories:happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry,or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies. It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners."The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,"Jack said."Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion,Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less." In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on,examining how cultural factors have diversified(多样性)these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion.Otherwise, when communicating emotions across cultures,Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation. 24.The discovery shows that Westerners A.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth B.consider facial expressions universally reliable C.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways D.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions 25.What were the people asked to do in the study? A.To get their faces impressive. B.To classify some face pictures. C.To make a face at each other. D.To observe the researchers' faces. 26.In comparison with Westerners,Easterners are likely to A.examine the eyes more attentively B.do translation more successfully C.study the mouth more frequently D.read facial expressions more correctly 27.What can be the best title for the passage? A.The Eye as the Window to the Soul B.Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills C.Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions D.How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding C In the 1990s Vietnam faced a terrible problem:many children in their country were malnourished(营养不艮的)。The government approached Jerry Sternin, who was at the time working for Save the Children in the USA,to set up an office in Vietnam.Jerry moved his family to Vietnam but when he arrived he discovered that not everyone in the government saw hope and appreciated his presence. He was told by his sponsor in the Foreign Affairs Department that they had 6 months to make a difference. Now Jerry had read the research and it was clear that big issues such as poverty and water cleanliness were major factors.Jerry put these findings into a bucket(楠)he called"true but useless".He wasn't about to change poverty or how clean Vietnam's water was.Instead he set about finding examples where things were working. Jerry set off to visit villages across the country. He asked people whether they knew of families who had children of a healthy weight even though they had access to the same resources as everyone else. And the answer was always"yes".They all seemed to know of some families where the kids were doing much better than most.So he visited these families and observed how the mothers fed their children.Over time a pattern came into view.Mothers of children with a healthy weight did four things differently from the rest. What happens next illustrates Jerry Sternin's talent.Instead of racing down the street screaming about his findings and advocating everyone with malnourished kids adopting these four behaviors, Sternin identified 50 families in 14 villages who could benefit and then took groups of 10 mothers to cook with the mothers with the healthy kids. They practiced together and learned a new way of behaving. After 6 months 65%of the children were better nourished and stayed that way.Throughout the 90s this approach benefited 2.2 million children in 265 villages and became the standard approach to fixing child malnutrition in Vietnam. 28.From the passage we can see that when Jerry got to Vietnam A.he felt some people in the government doubted his ability B.he found the problem was too difficult for him to solve C.he spent 6 months staying with families of the unhealthy children D.he brought with him the treatment for malnourished children there 29.What did Jerry believe was the key to solving the problem? A.Changing poverty. B.Reading about research. C.Finding a healthy pattern. D.Cleaning drinking water. 30.In what way were families with healthy children different from others? A.How they were educated. B.How they were fed. C.How much they exercised. D.How wealthy they were. 31.What played a key role in solving the problem? A.Jerry Sternin's devotion to work. B.Jerry Sternin's team spirit. C.Jerry Sternin's wide range of knowledge. D.Jerry Sternin's choice of the right method. D Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, and when he arrived in this hard world,it was very doubtful whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and struggled to star breathing. Oliver fought his first battle without much assistance from the two people present at his birth. One was an old woman, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver 's survival.________ However,Oliver managed to draw his first breath, and then announced his arrival.to the rest of the workhouse by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face from the pillow and whispered,"Let me see the child, and die." The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands."You must not talk about dying yet,"he said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold.Lovingly, she kissed the baby on its forehead with her cold white lips, then stared wildly around the room, fell back-and died."Poor dear!" said the nurse, hurriedly putting a green glass bottle back in the pocket of her long skirt. The doctor began to put on his coat."The baby is weak and will probably have difficulties,"he said. "If so,give it a little milk to keep it quiet."Then he looked at the dead woman."The mother was a good-looking girl.Where did she come from?" "She was brought here last night"replied the old woman."She was found lying in the street. She'd walked some distance, judging by he shoes, which were worn to pieces.Where she came from, where she was going to,or what her name was, nobody knows." The doctor lifted the girl's left hand."The old story."he said sadly, shaking his head."No wedding ring,I see.Ah!Good night." And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse.Without clothes, under his first blanket,he could have been the child of a king or a beggar. But when the woman dressed him later in rough cotton clothes, yellow with age,he looked exactly what he was-an orphan in a workhouse, ready for a life of misery, hunger, and neglect. Oliver cried loudly. If he could have known that he was a workhouse orphan, perhaps he would have cried even more loudly. There was no one to look after the baby in the workhouse,so Oliver was sent to a special"baby farm"nearby. There,he and thirty other children rolled around the floor all day, without the inconvenience of too much food or too much clothing.Mrs Mann, the old woman who"looked after" them, was very experienced. She knew what was good for children, and a full stomach was very dangerous to their health. She also knew what was good for herself,so she kept for her own use the money that she was given for the children's food. The board responsible for the orphans sometimes checked on the health of the children, but they always sent the beadle,a kind of local policeman.to announce their visit the day before. So whenever the board arrived,of course, the children were always neat and clean. This was the way Oliver was brought up.Consequently,at the age of nine he was a pale, thin child and short for his age.But despite frequent beatings by Mrs Mann, his spirit was strong, which was probably the reason why he managed to reach the age of nine at all. On Oliver' s ninth birthday,Mr Bumble, the beadle, came to the house to see Mrs Mann.Through the front window Mrs Mann saw him at the gate, and turned quickly to the girl who worked with her. "Quick!Take Oliver and those others upstairs to be washed!"she said. Then she ran out to unlock the gate which was always kept locked. 32.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.The children in the baby farm were taken good care of. B.Oliver was born into the world on a cold day. C.Doctors were usually paid too little for the work they did. D.Many people, especially women, drank heavily at that time. 33.Which sentence is most suitable for the blank in Paragraph 2? A.Therefore,he felt very lonely in the world. B.Frightened at the sight of the two,he started to cry. C.After all, death was a common event in the workhouse. D.In fact, the world was privileged(荣幸)to have him in it. 4.It can be inferred that the gate of the baby farm was always kept locked in order to. A.keep the children inside working all the time B.protect the children inside from dangers outside C.prevent official visitors walking in unexpectedly D.ensure the children were always neat and clean 35.According to the passage,Mrs Mann A.provided children with little food and few comforts B.was enthusiastic about looking after children C.cared little about Mr Bumble 's sudden appearance D.beat children frequently to make them mentally strong 第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Every week for the past thirty years,I have hosted a Sunday dinner in my home.People, including total strangers, call or e-mail to book a spot.I hold the salon in my studio. The first fifty people who call may come-twice that many when the weather is nice and we can overflow into the garden. 36 Last week it was a philosophy student from Lisbon, and next week a dear friend from London will cook. People from all corners of the world come to break bread together,to meet to talk, and often to become friends. All ages, nationalities, races, and professions gather here, and since there is no organized seating, the opportunity for connecting couldn't be better.I love the randomness(随意)。 I have a good memory,so each week I make a point to remember everyone's name on the guest list and where they're from so I can introduce them to one another. If I had my way,I would introduce everyone in the whole world to one another. 37 Many travelers go to see things like the Tower of London, the Statue of Liberty, the. Eiffel Tower, and so on.I travel to see friends,even-or especially-those I've never met. In the late 1980s,I edited a series of guidebooks to different countries. 38 Instead, each book contained about a thousand biographies of people who would be willing to welcome travelers in their cities.Hundreds of friendships evolved from these encounters, including marriages and babies. The same can be said for my salon. At a recent dinner a six-year-old girl from Bosnia spent the entire evening glued to an eight- year- old boy from Estonia.Their parents were surprised, and pleased,by this immediate friendship. 39 Most of them speak English,at least as a second language.Recently a dinner featured a typical mix:a beautiful painter from Norway,a truck driver from Arizona,a newspaper editor from Sydney and students from all over. It is unnecessary to understand others;one must,at the very least, simply tolerate others. 40 No one can ever really understand anyone else, but you can love them or at least accept them. I am a world citizen. All human history is mine.My roots cover the earth. We should know each other.Okay, now come and dine. A.I believe in introducing people to people. The next day,he went to work as usual.Everything seemed normal:he joked with his workmates and helped his clients as he always did.But no one noticed that he had brought a bigger suitcase to work, instead of the small one he always carried. At 5:00 pm,the bank closed, and the clerks and the guards had all gone home. However,at that moment,Jack was in the bathroom,He first cut the lines of the alarms and monitors with tools from his new suitcase. He was all too familiar with the equipment since he had been working there for 8 years and had been studying the security system for the past 30 days.Using a Special key and some other tools,he then easily opened the doors of the safes,The bank's security system wasn't very good, which allowed Jack to take a lot of money.Several minutes later,Jack left the bank with a heavy bag filled with money. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2. 应使用5个以上短文中有下划线的关键词语; 3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: After Jack had been gone from the bank for a while, the alarms began to ring. The next day was a really special day for the town, which was filled with newspaper and TV reporters covering the strange theft. The clerks at the bank were busy discussing the case, of course, including Jack. The police could only promise to catch the thieves as soon as possible, even though no clues had been found yet. But the most unlucky man was the manager of the bank, an old man. He seemed to be the only person to blame and was removed from his position. At last, with enough money for her operation, Jack's wife was saved. However, Jack felt guilty about the manager of the bank. He could not forget what he had done to the old man. His guilt deepened as time went by. Finally, he turned himself in to the police and accepted his punishment. 听力原文 听力录音稿 第一节 Text 1 W: I simply can’t put this toy car together in a proper way. M: By the way, what kind of stores do we need to go to? W: I want to buy some clothes in a clothing store. When we are going back, go to the butcher’s to buy some chicken. What’s more, I guess we’ll pick some comic books for Peter, for next Friday is his birthday. M: Ok. Let’s also go to the jewelry store to buy a diamond necklace. I want to buy one for you as your birthday present. W: Well, forget about it. Diamond things are not my cup of coffee. Thank you, anyway. I’d prefer a dinner cooked by you. You were such a good chef and all the beautiful memories. M: Sure, that’s a deal! Text 9 M: You look tired. What on earth have you been doing? W: Oh, I’ve been such a fool! You just wouldn’t believe what I have done. M: I would. Come on. W: I’ve been to London. I thought I’d be very sensible, so I drove down to the underground in the suburbs of London. But when I got back out of London, I couldn’t find my car. So I rang the police and told him what had happened. M: Did he help you find your car? W: Yes. He took me back into the underground station and out the other side into the other car park…and there was my car. Because there are two exits, you see, so I walked out of an exit, not knowing there were two and it was the other one. M: And was he angry? W: Yeah, and I was so sorry that I apologized all the time. M: Sounds like a terrible trip! Text 10 You may think Twitter, a universally popular social media platform, is used for just a small talk. No one can really convey a message in just 140 characters. But according to researchers, our Twitter messages provide a valuable insight towards our diet and our health. Coffee, beer and pizza were the most talked about products on the social media platform. Starbucks also featured highly, followed by alcohol, which increases the risk of some types of cancer. Researchers from the University of Utah assessed around 80 million Twitter messages sent between mid-2014 and mid-2015 only to find 4 million, which had mentioned food or drink. Besides, researchers found messages from poor areas were less likely to mention healthy foods while people living in developed areas were more likely to talk about fast food. The study also found the areas which talked more about walking, dancing and running had fewer deaths and lower rates of being overweight. 查看更多
