Personally Nike is my favorite one—it’s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, and Mercedes Benz own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites. Nike In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $ 35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.[] McDonald’s The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the arch shaped (拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968. Apple There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steven Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette ( 轮 廓 ) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far. Mercedes Benz The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz Cie. and DMG in 1926. 21. What does the author think of the stories of the great logos? A. They are boring. B. They are attractive. C. They are out of date. D. They are practical. 22. What does Nike’s logo stand for? A. The goddess of victory. B. The wing of the Greek goddess. C. The source of inspiration for soldiers. D. The statue of the Greek goddess. 23. We can learn that Apple’s present logo is ______. A. a bitten apple with only one color B. Newton’s sitting under an apple tree C. the religious story of Adam and Eve D. the rainbow-colored bitten apple 24. Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos? A. Nike – McDonald’s – Apple – Mercedes Benz. B. Mercedes Benz – Apple – Nike – McDonald’s. C. Mercedes Benz – McDonald’s – Nike – Apple. D. Nike – Mercedes Benz – McDonald’s – Apple. B I was in a terrible mood. Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn’t invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in. “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck? It’s a beautiful day.” “No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning. My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it. “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital”. When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my father’s injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there’s no telling what might have happened. A broken rib(肋骨)might have pierced(穿透)a lung...” My mother may have said more, but I didn’t hear. I didn’t hear anything except those terrible words: Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled those words at him earlier in the day? It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him. “Daddy… I am so sorry…” “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll be okay. ” “No,” I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day. You know, that morning?” My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly. He looked at me and said. “Sweetheart, I don’t remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. But I remember kissing you goodnight the night before. ”He managed a weak smile. My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. And we all have the power to choose our words. I intend to do that very carefully from now on. 25. Why did the author say sorry to his father in the hospital? A. Because he didn’t go along with his father. B. Because he was rude to his father that morning. C. Because he failed to come earlier after the accident. D. Because he couldn’t look after his father in the hospital. 26. The reason why the author’s father said he forgot everything about that day is that _____. A. he just wanted to comfort his son B. he didn’t hear what his son said[] C. he had a poor memory D. he lost his memory 27. What lesson did Beck learn from the matter? A. Don’t treat your parents badly. [] B. Don’t hurt others with rude words. C. Don’t move the injured in an accident. D. Don’t be angry with friends at small things. C Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age. The largest study of the effects of aging on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age. “We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK. “Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the aging process.” What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s. “This gender(性别) difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why aging takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink. The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age. 28. The underlined word “longevity” in the second paragraph probably refers to “________”. A. health B. ageing C. long life D. effect 29. The text mainly talks about ________. A. men’s heart cells B. women’s aging process C. the gender difference D. hearts and long life 30. According to the text, the UK scientists have known that ________. A. women have more cells than men when they are born B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age D. women never lose their pumping power with age 31. If you want to live longer, you should ________. A. enable your heart to beat much faster B. find out the reason for aging C. exercise regularly to keep your heart healthy D. prevent your cells from being lost D Stephen William Hawking(1942.1-2018.3), was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. Having spent his career decoding the universe and even experienced weightlessness, he was urging the continuation of space exploration — for humanity’s sake. The 76-year-old Hawking once said he did not think humans would survive another 1,000 years “without escaping beyond our fragile planet.” The scientist made the remarks before an audience of doctors, nurses and employees at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he toured a stem cell laboratory that’s focused on trying to slow the progression of Lou Gehrig’s disease. Hawking was diagnosed(被诊断) with the neurological disorder 55 years ago while studying at Cambridge University. He recalled how he became depressed and at first didn’t see a point in finishing his PhD. But he continued to devote himself to his studies. “If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way,” he said. Famous for his work on black holes and the origins of the universe, Hawking was also well-known for bringing abstract physics concepts to the masses through his best-selling books. Hawking survived longer than most people with Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord( 脊 髓 ) that control the muscles. People gradually have more and more trouble breathing and moving as muscles weaken and waste away. There’s no cure and no way to reverse (倒 转 ) the disease’s progression. Few people with ALS live longer than a decade. Hawking received around-the-clock care, could only communicate by twitching his cheek, and relied on a computer mounted to his wheelchair to convey his thoughts in a unique robotic monotone. Despite his diagnosis, Hawking remained active. In 2007, he floated like an astronaut on an aircraft that created weightlessness by making parabolic(抛物线) dives. “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do.” he said. 32. Why did Hawking remark that humans will not survive another 1,000 years? A. To warn the earth may not be suitable to live on. B. To make his theory on cosmology widely accepted. C. To show the earth is becoming more and more fragile. D. To persuade human beings to further space exploration. 33. What if a person suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease? A. They will be unable to walk or speak to others. B. They are likely to die within ten years generally. C. They can recover a little bit if they are treated early. D. They are mostly assisted by especially-designed robots 34. What do Hawking’s achievements in science lie in? A. His interest in physics. B. His creation of black holes. C. His research on the universe. D. His strong will against disease. 35. What must human beings do if they want to survive according to Hawking? A. Realize the way the universe works. B. Escape possible future disasters. C. Study the universe without stop. D. Protect the environment of the earth. 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中的两项为多余选项。 Why should girls play sports? You might say “to get exercise” and you’d be right.
